I Seem To......
« on: November 30, 2014, 10:50:30 AM »
see no reporting/crowing/bragging from Laminate, aka L.O.F. (Libbey-Owens-Ford) about the infamous "Turkey Derby". As usual it was an absolute disgrace to asphalt modified racing. A smashfest, doing considerable damage to some mighty fine pieces of racing equipment (the pictures on Speed 51 shows the carnage). The last time I attended a Turkey Derby somewhere around 15 years ago or so, sealed the deal for me (hasn't changed any). Much like Riverhead, Wall Stadium is not made for these cars. As much as I like the NWMT, I have not, and will not attend a race at Riverhead (the last tour race I attended at "The Head" was in 1995, and Mike E. won it).

How bout it Lammy? High car count on both ends. The number that showed up to race, and the number that went out in bushel baskets.

"Turkey Derby".............At least half the name is right. You can see one at most every county fair in the northeast.

Was Turkey Derby pretty? Far from it. Too many wrecks, many of them unnecessary. But to say "Wall stadium is not made for these cars" is like saying  "guns kill people". No, PEOPLE kill people, and the problems at Wall don't stem from the track itself. Is Loudon not made for these cars because over half the field was in the garage the last race there? Is Thompson not made for these cars because half the field was behind the wall a few of the past World Series races? Maybe, just maybe, the problem really is these cars were not made for the way many of the current crop of drivers choose to race them. I've seen excellent races at both Wall and Riverhead, along with NHIS and Thompson, when the guys behind the wheel choose to race each other with respect instead of the increasingly more prevalent " win at all costs" mentality. I've seen great races at these tracks with guys running with far inferior equipment than the drivers of today-no power steering, basic brake packages, tanks for cars-yet they managed to make up for their lack of equipment with an abundance of talent and respect. Those races are what turned so many of us on to racing in general, specifically the Modifieds. We all know when done right-there is no better racing than what gets put on by the groundpounders. However, when done wrong ( far too often an occurrence these days), it's a great source of bitterness from those of us that grew up watching how racing is supposed to be, and you can't tell me it's not a major ingredient why so many tracks are struggling with attendance. Can you change it, can I change it? No, but we can keep going to support the tracks and events we do, in the hopes that the ones that hold the wheel and push the pedals take a good hard look in the mirror and finally figure out that the people in the stands come to see guys racing side by side, putting on a show, and not sitting there watching caution laps because Driver X didn't have the car or talent to pass Driver Y, but " did what he had to do" to gain the position and the other guy is going off on the hook. May the best car and driver win, not the one willing to stoop the lowest to steal a trophy.

I've been saying the same thing for a while, although not nearly as eloquently as Winston.  He did leave one part out though. When the drivers step out of line, it is up to the officials to correct it. But the officials at Wall are by far the most utterly useless in the entire sport. I loved being able to see a modified race this time of year. But I stopped going long ago as I would always leave ***** off at the mockery that had just been made of my favorite division.  It really is a neat little track with a ton of potential. But until they get a race director that actually understands what his job is supposed to be, I won't go back.

Riverhead's two races are scheduled for June 27 and Aug 29.  Always two of my favorite races! The only track on the tour that still runs Nascar legal modifieds weekly, and therefore some of the biggest car counts of the season.

Daddy...can't join you here. I have to agree with many of your observations here but from reading the reports from Wall it looks like some of your

"professionals" from the exalted Tour were among the biggest offenders. I don't do the Derby (once two years ago) and this is one reason why.

Family and the holiday is the other.  Have your fun, enjoy your Winter and stop by again if and when the Tour gets a 40 count.

Andy...sorry about your luck. Not liking the pictures I've seen. Santa need to bring you  front and rear clips?

Sucks to get cleaned out that early in a race for sure.  As for Daddy..he ain't going away. He's like ISIS except when

he comes around I behead HIM. ;D  ( with logic and reason........and love)  ;)

Have a great winter.
