The Daytona Investigation Goes Into Overdrive
Jack Stand - Daily Movement Society and Motorsports Reporter
The investigation into a February 23, 2013 last lap crash at Daytona International Speedway that resulted in injuries to at least 28 fans has yet to be completed, according to a NASCAR official.
Peter Beeter, NA$CAR spokesperson updated the press at a news conference at Talladega Superspeedway on Wednesday.
"Here's what we know so far," said Beeter.
"There was an incident that involved a racecar, excessive speed, a wall, a crash, debris and fans. It appears from our initial investigation that the flying debris from the racecar may possibly have been what caused the injuries to the fans. Let me caution all of you that this is only a theory at this point and we'll need more time and investigation by our crack team of sleuths in order to confirm or dismiss this. We hope to have this completed by 2016 or 2017 at that latest."
"At the present time NA$CAR doesn't have the resources to spend time on this crash investigation as we're heavily involved in tracking down competitors who may have underweight connecting rods in their race engines. I don't need to tell you how important this issue is to France Cup Racing the detrimental impact that underweight connecting rods have on racing."
He continued, "We will be closely watching the restrictor plate races at Talladega this weekend to see if any cars or parts get into the grandstands and injure fans. This will help confirm our hypothesis that fans may need to be more aware of their surroundings and be ready to move quickly if debris is headed their way."
