Jim “Rocky” Rothwell, Kevan Cook, Scott Smith, Todd Koegel, Steve Sinn, Kyle Hackett and Eric Rowley all won their features on Saturday night at Skyline Raceway in Cortland NY.
Randy Shantel and Dan Clark brought the Modified-Sportsmen field to Head Starter Jeff Witt’s green flag with Clark taking the early lead. Jim “Rocky” Rothwell moved by Shantel on the first lap to take second place. The race went green for the first 14 laps until Bob Henry came to a stop in turn three bringing out the caution.
Clark held the lead after the restart with Rothwell in second, Kevin Jordan third, Steve Planck fourth and Jim LaRock fifth. On lap 18 LaRock drove past Planck to move into fourth.
Rothwell took the lead on lap 20 when he passed Clark coming off turn two. LaRock moved into third on the same lap, slipping by Jordan. At the line it was Jim “Rocky” Rothwell, picking up his first win of the year, LaRock edged Clark at the line for second with Kevin Jordan fourth and Ben Bushaw fifth.
Josh Van Tassel took the early lead in the 20 lap IMCA Modified main event. Van Tassel’s lead was short-lived as he broke entering turn one. Kevan Cook inherited the lead, with Mike Wilbur second, Jerry Lobdell third, Pete Neff fourth and Johnny Bell fifth. As Cook opened up a small lead, Lobdell worked his way past Wilbur for third place on lap 8. Cook’s lead slowly dwindled until Lobdell began pressuring the defending track champion late in the race. A late race bobble by Lobdell in turn 2 allowed Cook some breathing room and he took his first feature win of the year. Wilbur finished third, with Pete Neff fourth and Johnny Bell fifth.
In the 20 Lap Pure Stock feature, Jon Carpenter and Jake Fowlston led the field to the green flag. Nick Nye grabbed the early lead from his second row starting spot. Quickly moving up from his sixth starting spot, last week’s feature winner Scott Smith, took the lead on a lap 7 restart, with Nye holding down second, Bill Rampe third, Fowlston fourth and Earl Zimmer in fifth.
Problems with Fowlston’s ride allowed Gene Sharpsteen and the hard charging Clayton Ingraham to slip by. Two laps later Ingraham passed Sharpsteen to move into fourth. With five laps to go, Rampe drove by Nye for second place. At the line it was Scott Smith taking his second win in a row with Bill Rampe finishing second, Clayton Ingraham third, Nick Nye fourth and Earl Zimmer fifth.
Matt Oland went to the point at the start of the 15 lap Junkyard Dog main event. Oland stayed at the front of the heavily contested event until Ed White moved by the leader on lap 6. After returning from the pits, Todd Koegel made quick work, moving through the field and worked his way into second place on the same lap. Using the inside groove off turn two, Koegel made the pass to take the lead on lap 12. Koegel went on to win his third feature in as many weeks with Eddie White crossing the line second, Larry Rowley third, Matt Oland fourth and Dave Foster fifth.
Bobby Watson took the lead at the drop of the green in the 15 lap Junkyard Pups feature. On lap 11, Steve Sinn passed Watson to take the lead and went on to the win in the event. Wagner finished second with George Brown, Jimmy Neff and Brett Stevens crossing the line in that order.
Kyle Hackett cruised to his second win of the year in the 4 Cylinder Super Stock division, leading the race from flag to flag. Jett Bronson finished second with Nate Degraw third.
Eric Rowley took his first career feature win in the Young Pups 10 lap main out dueling two time winner Coby Herzog.
