Operation Green Flag Gets Rained Out at Merrittville

THOROLD, ONTARIO (July 11, 2020) … Management of the Merrittville Speedway has pulled the plug on Operation Green Flag: Mission Merrittville scheduled for Saturday, July 11. Potential heavy rains are expected in the forecast throughout the day and into the evening were factors behind the decision.

“The weather for today and tonight was not going to be favorable in order for us to have the whole show completed”, says track owners Don and Lorraine Spiece. “We had drivers register to compete that were traveling from several hours away and we made the decision to call off tonight’s show in a timely manner”, the Spiece’s added.

Operation Green Flag: Mission Merrittville has been rescheduled for Sunday, July 26 featuring the S&W Service Centre 358 Modifieds, 360 Sprint Cars, and Hoosier Stocks. The full program will be streamed live on GForceTV.net and can be seen nationally on REVTV Canada at a date to be announced. The 358 Modifieds purse has been updated with $300 to take the green thanks to DiPaola, DiPietro, and Little Licensed Public Accountants.

Fans are encouraged to keep up to date with all the schedules and if any changes are needed by following Merrittville on social media including Facebook (facebook.com/MerrittvilleSpeedway), Twitter (@Merrittville), and now on Instagram (@merrittvillespeedway). OUTLAW SPEEDWAY LOSES JULY 10, 2020 FEATURE EVENTS TO RAIN.

All qualifying heat races are completed prior to Mother Nature taking control.

Story by Kenny Shupp Jr. PR Director.

(Dundee, NY) A light drizzle just prior to the start of hot laps forced the track preparation crew at the Outlaw Speedway to put in additional time getting the surface in race trim.  After approximately a forty-five-minute delay the qualifying heat races were run off in all seven of the regular class of competition with only one major incident coming in the first heat of the IMCA Hobby Stock Division.  With a hotly contested fight for the lead brewing among the top five competitors, some contact was made exiting turn four finding Jack Ayers climbing over the right rear tire and quarter panel of the Nick Stark machine.  Ayers then did a series of barrel rolls down the front straight away coming to rest upside down in the infield area.  The highly trained team of EMT’s along with other track Fire and Rescue personnel were at the Ayers machine within seconds and after some anxious moments the veteran driver exited his heavily damaged car and walked away.  As the machine was then turned back onto its wheels it could be observed that the roll cage was still totally intact with no damage to the cockpit area.

The Winner’s Circle Deli Bandit feature was on the track for their feature event just prior to intermission when a steady rain hit the speedway forcing Outlaw Speedway Track Owner, Tyler Siri and his girlfriend, Jordan Lynch with no other choice but the cancel the remainder of the program.
With seven adult class feature events to be made up the track will release a tentative schedule of how and when the remaining feature events will be made up.  Early indications point to at least one feature make-up per week for the foreseeable future.

The $1,000 Bounty that was placed on Super Matt Sheppard this past week by Siri for any Modified driver that can beat the four time feature winner in 2020 will roll over till next Friday night and continue until one of Sheppard’s competitors can stop his win streak.

Some one hundred thirty-three cars filled the Outlaw Speedway pit area, the largest car count of the season thus far including invaders in every class of competition.  The most notable perhaps being Mike Maresca making the long haul from the northern part of New York State to compete in the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep Ram Modified Division.  It is hoped that Maresca will return to Outlaw as he along with other top Modified pilots all have their sights set on dethroning Super Matt Sheppard and leaving with the added $1,000 bonus.

As of this writing the Outlaw Speedway will continue to operate with NO FANS in the grandstand seating area as per New York State requirements.  However, the pit area will remain open to those choosing to enter and the action can also be seen live on Dirt Track Digest TV for a minimal fee.  For more information simply log in at www.dirttrackdigest.com

Statement from Watkins Glen International regarding the Go Bowling at The Glen weekend

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (July 8, 2020) – As a result of the ongoing pandemic nationwide, our NASCAR weekend has been realigned to the Daytona International Speedway road course August 14 – 16.

“This is an unprecedented time in the history of our nation and Watkins Glen International,” said WGI President Michael Printup. “The dynamic situation we are all confronting is impacting our daily lives and activities in unimaginable ways. While we are disappointed we will not experience NASCAR in New York this year, as we look broadly at the current pandemic in our country and around the world, we must focus first on everyone’s safety and well-being as NASCAR seeks the best way to continue delivering a remarkable on-track product week after week.”

Ticketholders for the Watkins Glen International NASCAR weekend will automatically receive a credit for the full amount of their purchase, plus an additional 20% of the total amount paid in their account within the next 5-7 days. The credit can be applied to a future NASCAR race event in 2020 or 2021 at a NASCAR-owned track.

For additional ticketholder options and more information, please visit www.TheGlen.com/assistance-NASCAR. If a refund is preferred, requests are due August 7, 2020.

Please note that our team will be in touch as soon as possible regarding requests, but it may take up to 60 days from the original form submission date to process.

World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars Upcoming Schedule

Four-race Midwest swing starts Friday; Gettysburg Clash added to July schedule West Coast events to be replaced by postponed Spring races

CONCORD, NC — The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Sprint Car Series kicks off a four-race swing from Iowa to Wisconsin to Indiana and eventually Ohio beginning Friday night. It begins to shape the next couple of months on the tour.

Following events Friday at 34 Raceway, Saturday at Wilmot Raceway, Sunday at the Terre Haute Action Track and Tuesday in the Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park, the World of Outlaws stars will turn their focus to Pennsylvania.

The Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup on Tuesday, July 21, at Lernerville Speedway remains one of the most historic events on the tour each year, and at $25,000 the biggest midweek payday all season. In addition, the previously postponed Gettysburg Clash presented by Drydene at Lincoln Speedway is rescheduled for Thursday, July 23, ahead of the July 24-25 Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway.

“These are some of the most challenging times we’ve ever experienced on many different levels,” World of Outlaws CEO Brian Carter said. “Our goal is to provide entertainment to our fans and high-level competition for our teams while also doing it as safely as we possibly can. We continue to work with local and state governments across the country, and in some cases it just doesn’t make sense to bring the Series to several of the locations that were originally scheduled given the current environment. Therefore, we’re doing our best to let our fans know where they can expect to see us over the next few months. And of course, they can always watch us on DIRTVision no matter where they reside.”

Mass gathering restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic have affected the events scheduled for July 31-Aug. 2 in New York. The event that was to run July 31 at Ransomville Speedway will be rescheduled for the 2021 season, and fans with tickets can use their same tickets for that event. The Empire State Challenge scheduled for Aug. 1 at Weedsport Speedway and the event Aug. 2 at Orange County Fair Speedway are canceled for 2020 and tickets will be handled through the tracks.

Two huge August weekends follow. First up is the Aug. 7-8 Ironman Weekend at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 with fully open grandstands. The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars “Return to Racing” included I-55 in May with Brad Sweet and Kyle Larson winning a couple of thrillers.

The next week, Aug. 13-15, is “The One & Only” at Knoxville Raceway featuring the $50,000-to-win Brownells Capitani Classic presented by Great Southern Bank. Three World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series races will run in place of the NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store with a total prize money in excess of $400,000. With limited three-day ticket packages available in advance, fans are encouraged to secure their seats at World of Outlaws.com before it’s too late.

Like normal, the Outlaws will head to North Dakota after Knoxville. The Series will invade River Cities Speedway Aug. 21 in Grand Forks and then head Aug. 22 to Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo. The event originally scheduled for Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, SD, has been canceled, and fans will be contacted by SLS Promotions.

A major shift in the schedule will then take place. Rather than head towards the West Coast where local restrictions in several municipalities will make it impossible for the Series to compete, the Outlaws will aim to fill that stretch of the schedule from Aug. 28 through Sept. 19 with races that had been postponed in the spring when the sports world shut down.

So this fall, the World of Outlaws will not be racing at Black Hills Speedway (Aug. 28), Big Sky Speedway (Aug. 29), Skagit Speedway (Sept. 4-5), Grays Harbor Raceway (Sept. 7), Willamette Speedway (Sept. 9), Silver Dollar Speedway (Sept. 11-12), Stockton Dirt Track (Sept. 18) or Calistoga Speedway (Sept. 19).

In addition, the postponed California spring events at Santa Maria Raceway and Thunderbowl Raceway are also canceled.

Fans who purchased tickets to Black Hills, Santa Maria, Grays Harbor, Stockton and Calistoga will receive a credit for the face value of their ticket in their MyDirtTickets.com account. If a refund is preferred, CLICK HERE to request a face value refund.

Fans with tickets to the events at Dakota State Fair Speedway and Big Sky will be contacted by SLS Promotions. Fans with tickets to Skagit and Thunderbowl should contact the tracks for ticket information.

All events, including The One & Only at Knoxville, will be broadcast on DIRTVision to Fast Pass subscribers.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (July 1, 2020) – Watkins Glen International has announced a new partnership with Gilligan’s Ice Cream as the Preferred Ice Cream of The Glen, to satisfy the sweet tooth of race fans.

“This partnership is certainly a treat for all our fans,” said WGI President Michael Printup. “We are excited to not only have a preferred ice cream and unique flavors dedicated to Watkins Glen International, but being able to partner with another New York State company is fantastic to share their products with the community.”

The Sherburne, NY based company will feature a wide variety of ice cream and develop a custom flavor dedicated to the iconic 3.4-mile circuit. Gilligan’s has been specializing a variety of hard ice cream flavors including chocolate, vanilla, sherbet and sorbet for more than 20 years. And what's better than watching a race on a summer day then with an ice cream.”

Gilligan’s is proud to offer a diverse range of ice cream flavors at several restaurants and wineries in Central New York. Here is a copy-and paste of New York State's Governor Cuomo's executive order regarding racetracks re-opening ...A link of a .pdf on the state's website can be found at the bottom. Not unexpectedly, the order is filled with plenty of "legalese" (so beware: it is a long read...)

The bulk of the document is in regard to political election guidelines--but as one might expect, cleverly tucked in at the bottom of the document regards operation of racetracks: specifically as it pertains to fan attendance

"Any licensee or franchisee of a racetrack in the State is hereby permitted to operate such racetrack as of June 1, 2020, provided such racetrack does not permit any visitor or fan into the facility, and allows on site only essential personnel; and provided further that such licensee or franchisee of a racetrack, and all essential personnel adhere to any directive or guidance issued by the Department of Health and/or by the Gaming Commission."

I could be misinterpreting what the order states but in my mind, the legalities of the operation of racing getting back to "normal" is one for attorneys to muddle through.  Now, I ain't no lawyer nor legal scholar so I welcome interpretations and opinions for discussion of executive order 202.44. We all want racing to return to the way it was before all this pandemic stuff affected nearly all aspects of our lives...

Keep the discussion lively but PLEASE let's stay away from heavy-handed political overtones, bashing and personal insults!

Jake Dykstra and Darren Dryden were on the front row for the first Action Sprint Tour event of the 2020 season with Dykstra showing the way. JULY 2020 SCHEDULE AT THE OUTLAW SPEEDWAY STILL UP IN THE AIR

Kenny Shupp Jr.  PR Director

(Dundee, NY) With the month of June now all but a distant memory, Outlaw Speedway owner, Tyler Siri and his girlfriend, Jordan Lynch are now shifting their attention to the July 2020 schedule.

Outlaw Speedway, along with virtually every other race venue in New York State completely lost the entire months of April and May due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.  As the Finger Lakes Region of New York, where Outlaw Speedway is located moves thru Phases 1, 2 and 3 the track now is readying for Phase 4 which can happen at any time depending on how the scientific date and numbers shake out, but it appears as though everything is on point for most venues like Outlaw to re-open with race fans.

For the past several weeks the popular Yates County oval has been open, but only to pit admission with no fans in the stands as per Governor Cuomo’s directive.  Thousands of others have stayed home and enjoyed televised broadcasts from the track on DIRT TRACK DIGEST TV.  This has worked out well for those that could not attend or did not want to view from the pit area.  For the most part the reviews have made the pay per view effort worthwhile and it keeps loyal fans in touch with the race action.

Entering July Siri and Lynch have some decisions to make as there are no less than two huge events on the horizon the first of which is the annual Fireworks Extravaganza tentatively set to go on Friday, July 3.  The other big event is the Annual Summer Nationals scheduled for Friday and Saturday, July 24 and 25.

With the track having lost numerous high profile events including the Lucas Nationals, the First Annual Cindy Lane Memorial Spring Nationals, the Brett Deyo Short Track Super Series, The Tony Stewart Ollies Outlets All Star Circuit of Champions 410 Sprint Car Series as well as the First Annual Gene Dupuy Memorial, all in the months of April, May and June due to the Coronavirus.
Some of those events “may” have a second chance should re-scheduling become an option; however, most are gone for the season.

According to track owner, Tyler Siri, “We have been at the mercy of Governor Cuomo and the NYS Health Department for months and continue to follow their guidance.  We understand the importance of following along with the protocol and to provide a safe environment for all our racers, fans and staff. Actually, we opened much earlier than we previously thought we would be able to and everyone that has been involved with the events we have run thus far have done a great job in keeping things safe.”
Siri is still not sure what will happen in the coming weeks.
“We can’t even begin to guess what is up next or when we fill be able to open the main gates for race fans.  We have been keeping things simple by just running Regular Super 7 Shows with no special events.  The pit attendance has been consistent and the pay per view has worked out very well, but for us to put on any high-profile event we need those butts in the bleachers.”

Rumors abound as to what directive Cuomo will go with entering the 4th and final Phase.

“Jordan and I are hearing all kinds of numbers flying around.  Everything from 25% to 100% capacity.  If we are limited to let us say 50% that will certainly help, but again if we can’t open with a larger capacity it will make a difference in what kind of program we run.”

It will also be difficult in policing the 6’ social distancing protocol when fans are allowed back into the grandstand seating area, however there Is ample seating area the entire front straight away and if need be there are other options to get people in the facility.

“The track needs to play by the book.  We have permits to operate the facility that are issued by the State of New York and if we screw up it could potentially mean loss of our liquor or health department certificates which would shut us down.  This has already happened across the state in other private sector businesses and we don’t want it happening at Outlaw Speedway.”

With all this in mind the track will continue to take baby steps for the foreseeable future and take it one week at a time.

“That’s still about all we can do at this point.  If I could look into a crystal ball and predict what will happen over the next month, we could plan and go with it, but there is still a lot of uncertainty as we move forward.”

Siri and Lynch do have a well thought plan in effect when the track can re-open to race fans.  The staff members that work on the main grandstand side of the facility have been on alert that they could be called to work on a day’s notice.  The track has been stockpiling food and other supplies and several food and beverage vendors are onboard with the fact that they could receive a call on Thursday to make deliveries on Friday.

“We have been in constant communication with our suppliers and they totally understand the situation that we are dealing with.  It could very well be an eleventh-hour decision to open for fans and our vendors are ready to roll whenever we say go.”

The same holds true with the Annual Fireworks Extravaganza scheduled for July 3.

“The pyrotechnic company we use for our fireworks program knows that we may decide the day before the event that we have the go ahead to re-open and we will still have fireworks as planned.  We are trying extremely hard to not leave any stones unturned so that when we get the go ahead from the state, we can swing the gates for fans.”

With all this in mind Tyler Siri and Jordan Lynch of the Outlaw Speedway will continue to race every Friday night for the duration focusing on their seven weekly classes plus the youth Bandit Division in hopes that the number of Coronavirus cases continues to drop and the remaining schedule can get back on track.
