With the closing and retirement of my father from the racing scene, as many of you have known it as BILLY MAYNARD RACING or MEI MOTORSPORTS, I have decided to buy the race team from my father and go on my own. My father has become sick where if you’re not on Facebook then you wouldn’t know, but he has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. That’s why there is a sudden sell out and retirement after 30 seasons in racing.

Once again Mother Nature gave the fans and race teams a great night for racing at The Hill Speedway.
Fifty race teams graced the racing facility, with several newcomers.  One team in the Street Stock division, made the trip from the Buffalo area to try out the track.  Ron Richter was the longest distance traveler, but had some fun racing at the track.  Newcomers Mike and Tyler Stoddard who compete in the IMCA Style Mods were also finding the track to their liking. 

   First feature event found the Pure Stocks making their way on to the track.  Larry Lane driving the number 83 made his debut.  The early lead went to AJ Hunsinger until lap four when he was involved in a caution that caused him to loose the rear bumper.  He made several pit stops, but with the bumper gone it left no protection to the fuel cell.   On the restart many time feature winner Cody Kershner grabbed the lead.  He was challenged by Chris Bennett, but held on for another win.  Finishing behind him were Chris Bennett, Ray Greene Jr., and Josh Ames.

   The popular Front Wheel Drive 4 Cylinders were ready to do battle.  Trevor Williams and Randy Lane brought the field to the green flag.  Williams grabbed the lead until the caution came out on lap two for Trevor Belcher who had a flat tire.  On the restart Williams and Burt Maynard battled as Maynard grabbed the lead.  The remainder of the feature was caution free with Burt holding off the Williams machine.  It was the second feature win for the number 69 of Maynard, with Trevor Williams in second, newcomer Kenny Underwood in third, Devon Bailey in fourth and Matt Browning in fifth.

   The IMCA Style Mods were next on the feature schedule.  Brandon Hillyard and Harry Ely brought the field to the green.  Ely took command of the feature event until the caution came out for Gary Lamphere and Tony Harris.  Both drivers pitted and did not return to the feature.  On the restart the battle for the lead found Jake Maynard and Harry Ely racing side by side.  Maynard was able to steal the lead away from the Ely machine.  The second and final caution of the night found the field bunched up.  Jake ran hard and held off the Harry Ely to maintain the lead.  The battle for second between Harry Ely and Bobby Maynard was tight.  Ely managed to overcome the battle and stayed in second.  Newcomers Mike and Tyler Stoddard worked their way to the front battling each other for third and fourth.  When the checkered flag fell it was Jake Maynard recording his very first victory at The Hill Speedway.  Rounding out the top five were Harry Ely, Tyler Stoddard, Mike Stoddard and Bobby Maynard.

   Rear Wheel Drive 4 Cylinders were up next with Darrin Horton and Mike Navone pacing the field.  Horton grabbed the early lead with last weeks feature winner Bryan Stone in hot pursuit.  Darrin did all he could to keep the Stone machine behind him.  With only one caution during this event the battle for the win was tremendous.  On lap twelve Stone got by the Horton machine.  The battle now was for second between Horton and Alan Blackwell.  Blackwell did manage to get the second position away from Darrin.  Then he set his sights on the Stone machine.  He was not able to catch the high flying 3C of Bryan Stone and had to settle for second.  Bryan recorded another feature win into the books.  Behind Bryan was Alan Blackwell, Darrin Horton, Mike Koser and Mike Navone.

   The final event of the evening is one of the reasons the fans come to watch at The Hill.  The mighty Street Stock division had Dan Force and Doug Stack Jr., bringing the twelve car field to the green.  A caution came out immediately as contact was made between three cars.  Doug Stack Jr., and Rich Sharpsteen ended up crashed together.  The Sharpsteen car was able to continue, but the Stack car went pit side for the remainder of the feature event.  Tough break for the many time feature winner.  On the restart it was Tom Savercool who grabbed the lead from Doug Stack Sr. He opened a sizeable lead and was challenged by the Stack Sr., machine early in the event.  Coming from the rear of the field was Rich Sharpsteen and Chad Ely.  Both cars ran in the second position for a time.  It was Savercool who grabbed the checkered flag with Sharpsteen in second, Doug Stack Sr., in third, Dan Force in fourth and Chad Ely in fifth.

OPENING NIGHT AT "THE HILL SPEEDWAY" A SUCESS

MONROETON, PA

 Mother nature sure made it a nice evening for racing at the opener at The Hill Speedway in Monroeton, PA.  The fans got to see 41 cars in five different divisions race for the first time in three years.  The divisions that competed included IMCA Style Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, RWD 4 Cylinders and FWD 4 Cylinders.  It was a non points race for this event of the season. 

 In the IMCA Style Modifieds, many of the locals were on hand including former track champion Eddie Sites.  The feature event was exciting as Jake Maynard and Gary Lamphere made up the front row.  Jake Maynard grabbed the early lead.  The Gary Lamphere and Keith Jack Lamphere machines battled for second until debris on the track brought out the first caution of the event.  On the restart the battle between Lamphere and Maynard was tight.  Lamphere grabbed the lead and Jake Maynard brought out the second caution after making contact with the front stretch wall.  Bobby Maynard was also caught up in Jake's caution as he hit the 69 while it sat on the front stretch.  Bobby was able to continue, while Jake made a pit stop.  He did return to the event, but fell out in the closing laps.  On the restart Keith Jack Lamphere grabbed the lead.  His uncle Gary Lamphere was right behind him hoping to still the lead away.  Behind them the 57 of Harry "Beaver" Ely and Brad Sites battled for third position.  Keith Jack Lamphere continued to hold off Gary to grabbed the first checkered flag.  Rounding out the top five were Eddie Sites, Harry Ely, and Brad Sites.

 The ever popular Street Stock division made its way onto the track with Bobby Maynard and Tom Savercool making up the front row. The first caution came out right after the drop of the green for three cars spun together in turn two.  It was a complete restart as Maynard jumped into the lead, with Doug Stack Sr., Kevin Garland and Doug Stack Jr. all in tow.  Doug Stack Jr. was working his way through the field trying to catch the Maynard number 29.  The second caution came out when Bobby Maynard spun in turn two.   That put Kevin Garland and Doug Stack Jr. in the front row.  They raced side by side for a couple laps when Doug stole away the lead.  He never looked back once grabbing the lead.  Kevin Garland did try to work his way back to the top spot, but was not able to do as Tommy Savercool got by him in the closing laps.  It was an emotional win for Doug Stack Jr., as he dedicated the win to his friend and fellow competitor who passed away Chad Sindoni.  Coming across the line in second was Tommy Savercool, third was Kevin Garland, fourth was Rich Sharpsteen and fifth was Mike Chilson.

 The Pure Stock class has many rookie drivers in the ranks this season.  When the feature started it was Craig Smith and Justin Hall making up the front row.  Hall grabbed the early lead with Smith right behind him.  The first caution came out when Ray Greene Jr., spun in turn two.  That bunched up the field again with Justin Hall regaining the lead when the green fell.  Craig Smith and Dustin Burdick battled for the second position, with Smith staying in that position.  Burdick brought out the next caution and it tightened up the field again.  On the restart Craig Smith grabbed the lead.   There was three wide racing for the second as Justin Hall, Dustin Burdick and Cody Kershner battled for the spot.  Burdick ended up getting out of shape, with Justin Hall have a mechanical problem and went pit side.  When the checkered flag fell it was the Rookie driver Craig Smith grabbing his first win.  Rounding out the top five were Cody Kershner, Ray Green Jr., Dustin Burdick and Justin Hall.

 Front Wheel Drive 4 Cylinders made their way to the track, with Devon Bailey and Cory Lewis pacing the field.  Bailey grabbed the lead early in the event.  During the next couple of laps Cory worked his way into the lead as the Bailey number 17 went high.  It was the Brett Neely car that stole the lead away from third to steal the lead from the Lewis number 10.    Devon and Cory raced hard for the second position.  Bailey gained the lead after the Neely machine developed a mechanical problem.  He opened a sizable lead over the field, with Cory Lewis trying all he could to get back within range to grab the lead back.  When the checkered flag fell it was Devon Bailey recording his first win of the season.  Cory Lewis was second, Matt Browning was third, Ryan Wood was fourth and Brett Neely was fifth.

 Rear Wheel Drive 4 Cylinders came to the track with Dustin Horton starting on the pole.  The number 66 grabbed the lead early with heavy smoke billowing from the rear of the car.  Behind the leader Mike Koser worked his way into second position, with Josh Collins in third.  The Horton machine lead the feature until about half way when he went pit side after the car lost power.  This gave the lead to Mike Koser who opened up his lead.  He continued to lead the field to the checkered flag.  Following him across the line were Josh Collins, Ed Navone, Eric Ellsworth, and Mike Navone.

 The fans got to witness the first race of many to come at The Hill Speedway.  Coming up this week it will be the start of track points.  The drivers will be given points to determine the champions at the end of the season.  Be sure to come and get your "Thrills on the Hill".  Racing every Friday at 7:00PM, with gate opening at 4:00PM, and hot laps at 6:30PM.  For more information visit the website at www.thehillspeedway.com or by calling the track phone at 570-637-3014

It was very smoothly ran. They tried their best to give us rscers a smooth surface. Congrats to them. Only concern I ask to be addressed is turn 3&4. You go to the outside it sucks you into the wall. It happened to me twice last night which the first time I caught a rut just right and took me away to the wall. Other then that I loved the bite, no tire wear at all!
