KRESSLEY EARNS SECOND MODIFIED WIN OF THE SEASON AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY

CHUCK ECKERT TAKES FIRST CAREER SPORTSMAN FEATURE VICTORY

BECHTELSVILLE, PA. August 23, 2020 . . . On the previous Saturday night at Grandview Speedway, Brett Kressley was forced to be a spectator for the 30-lap T.P. Trailers Modified NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts feature race rather than a participant due to a disqualification after a heat race incident. He returned this week with a score to settle and wasted no time charging from his ninth starting grid to the front of the 28-car starting lineup. Kressley, behind the wheel of the Kressley Auto & Truck Sales No. 19K, passed Richie Hitzler for the lead on the 12th lap and went on to score his second win of the season to increase his career win total to 14.

Chuck Eckert, son of the late Chargin’ Charlie Eckert, led the entire way in the 25-lap T.P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman feature for his first career to become the ninth different winner in the division. It was an emotional win for him as he was so happy to be standing in victory lane.

Modified and Sportsman feature winners that met the necessary requirements received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Kressley and Eckert. Jesse Leiby earned an extra $100 bonus from the track for being the highest crate engine finisher

Modified racing had Hitzler as the early pacesetter at the drop of the green.

The yellow was thrown with two laps completed after Craig Whitmoyer hit the backstretch wall. Ray Swinehart was also involved and they were both out of contention. Hitzler held his own on the restart followed by Brett Gilmore, Ron Kline, Kevin Hirthler and Kressley.

Kline and Kressley put on quite a battle for second which gave Hitzler some breathing room. Once Kressley cleared Kline, his next mission was to take control of first.

On the 14th lap restart needed when Kyle Weiss got sideways on the backstretch and slowed down causing Craig Von Dohren, left with nowhere to go, to make contact with him. Kressley was still at the head of the pack with second through fifth now comprised of Duane Howard, Hitzler, Kline and Louden Reimert. Trying to break into the top five was Mike Gular, which he did by overtaking third on lap 17 to pressure 357.

The front runners had a tricky situation to deal with as they approached lap traffic by lap 17 and had to use heads up driving.

With five laps remaining the running order behind Kressley, who ran the bottom lane in turns one and two and the high lane in three and four because he knew the order behind consisted of Howard, Gular, Rick Laubach and Weiss were in pursuit and he wanted to take their line away.

Kressley dealt with the lapped cars and never looked back until the drop of the checkered to be the second repeat winner of the season. Finishing second was Howard followed by Gular, Laubach and Weiss. Kline, Reimert, Ryan Grim, Jeff Strunk, last week’s winner, and Hirthler rounded out the top ten.

Heats were won by Hitzler, Jared Umbenhauer, Howard and Kline. Dylan Swinehart and Brad Brightbill, now driving the BMS No. 14, won the consies.

Before the first lap could be recorded in the Sportsman feature the red was out for a multi-car first turn tangle. The second try was thwarted as cars were spun in the second turn. Finally when action went green again Eckert was in the lead trailed by Scott Kohler, already a feature winner this season; Chris Esposito, Nathan Mohr and Kyle Lilick.

The red was thrown once again on the 11th lap when rookie Mark Gaugler rode the first turn wall with heavy impact. He was shaken up a bit and the car was destroyed. Eckert resumed the lead on the restart while Esposito, Brad Arnold, B. Hirthler and S. Kohler tried to unseat him.

Eckert, a former Enduro driver that enjoys competing at the 1/3-mile oval and feels he needs more seat time, never surrendered the lead and went on to win the event. Esposito, who showed sportsmanship and congratulated Eckert finished in the runner-up spot trailed by Arnold, B. Hirthler and S. Kohler. Sixth through tenth were Jack Butler, Kyle Lilick, Mohr, Ryan Beltz and Jesse Leiby.

Hardly a season has passed that Welch has failed to crack the winner's circle at his beloved Saturday hangout in the Finger Lakes Region. Success continued to follow the 10-time Canandaigua points champion on a steamy Saturday that attracted 18 full-fender foes to the fairgrounds.

“We've been gaining all season and finally made it back,” remarked Welch, 54, after the Lyons pilot garnered his all-time leading 82nd career stock car win at the fairgrounds. His first victory of 2020 came in the season-opener with the full-fender portion of the show staged in the afternoon. “Right before the feature we made a bunch of changes that I've never done before on this car, fortunately they worked.”

Rick Crego out-dragged front row partner Bob Buono on lap one while seventh starting Welch waited patiently in pursuit. Parker Smith seized second on lap three then suddenly slid high and found himself seventh when the dust cleared exiting turn four.

Welch passed Buono for second as the duo crossed the stripe to complete lap four yet Crego appeared on the way to his first checkered flag, holding onto a sizable lead halfway through. Welch had other ideas, reducing the deficit lap after lap until throwing his black #00 Dobbers Sports Bar & Grill-TLC Trips-Champion Power Chevrolet Camaro under Crego in turn two and steering around first-time driver Mike Fellows down the backstretch with still five laps to go in the caution-free affair.

“Rick was running great, he was out there and didn't think I could run him down,” Welch admitted. “But slowly and slowly I moved up as he was running my favorite bottom line. Finally caught him and luckily we got by him, that lapped car helped. I moved up a lane and cut the guy off.”

Welch sped on for a satisfying 10 car-length victory over Crego, with Adam DePuy returning aboard Quinn Sutherland's #57J Camaro to place third ahead of point leaders Josh Pangrazio and Jimmy Grant.

The introductory Hobby division feature ended the same way it had three times previous during the pandemic, with Burnell posing alongside the family-owned no. 57jr. Castle Harvester-Touhey Insurance Chevrolet Camaro in victory lane.

After being chased by Street Stock mainstay Marc Minutolo in a shake-down run aboard his father Mike's former full-fender ride, Burnell staved off late-race challenges from runner-up #10 Jaren Israel and #18x Derek Excell to nab another convincing win in the 15-lap nightcap.

“I try to race clean and it got real close at the end with the #10 and #18 cars coming inside and outside but I ran my own race and just kept going forward,” stated Burnell, 18, who took the lead from Shawn Lloyd on lap three and never relinquished the top spot. “Made some changes, got the car tighter, just want to be able to stay on the gas longer and make it go faster. Drive into (turns) harder and just realize when the car starts getting loose to let off (gas) a little then get back on it when its straight.”

Israel salvaged second in his second-ever appearance at LOLR with Excell returning after five years, on this night subbing for injured driver Jim Claypool. Casey Wagner and Lloyd rounded out the final top-5.

LOLR Points Leader Wight Back On Track With 5th Big-Block Feature Win

Canandaigua, NY – Aug. 22, 2020 – Tom Skibinski, Land of Legends Raceway PR

Pepsi Big-Block Modified hotshot Larry Wight topped tour rival Matt Sheppard on Saturday to score a narrow victory and pad his division lead heading into the final scheduled points event next weekend at Land Of Legends Raceway.

Veterans Kevin Ridley (Speed Connection Sportsman) and Mike Welch (Street Stock) each captured their second feature wins of the summer while Mike Emhof Motorsports 305 Sprint Car ace Jason Whipple pulled into the winner's circle for the first time in the 'Saturday Spectacular' at the Ontario Co. Fairgrounds.

Second-generation speedster Tyler Burnell continued to reign supreme in Hobby Stock competition, closing out Sherwin-Williams Paint Store of Canandaigua Night with his fourth checkered flag in six starts during his rookie year in Canandaigua.

With the 2020 season championships coming down to the wire, Wight wheeled his way ever closer to the coveted Big-Block crown as the Phoenix NY pilot proved worthy holding off perennial points king Sheppard in a late race duel to score the dramatic win by a mere .176-sec.

“I couldn't really tell what the better line was running up front and not knowing how Matt got up through there so I just stuck with what I thought worked,” remarked Wight, 27, who now holds a 28-point (392-364) advantage over north country campaigner Tim Fuller. “We bobbled a little bit getting through the holes in (turn) three and lost the nose but had enough drive to come off and beat him to the line.”

A solid 30-car field took chief starter Scott Hixson's opening green flag with qualifying heat race winner Wight filing in 12th to begin the 35-lap finale. Front row partners Jimmy Maier and Justin Wright swapped the lead early while Wight rolled his red hot #99L FX Caprara Honda-Tracey Road Equipment/Bicknell ride into the top-5 before 10 laps were complete.

James Sweeting suffered a right front flat tire to incur a yellow flag on lap 18, and only Billy Dunn separated Wight from leader Wright at the halfway mark. Sheppard began 17th and methodically carved his way to the front, riding into 7th on the lap 18 restart, cracking the front-five just one more time around the fast half-mile oval before dropping Dillon Groover to fourth on lap 21.

Dunn grabbed the lead between turns one and two yet before the lap could be scored Wight charged from third to first, relegating Wright into the show position as the trio crossed the line with 22 complete. 'Super Matt' passed Wright over the next half-mile but needed five more circuits to duck under runner-up Dunn and focus on front-runner Wight.

With Sheppard closing in fast using the low lane as 'Lightning Larry' continued to chase the high line, red lights suddenly flashed around the speedway after Jeff Lawrence's yellow #1 Bicknell entry mount sat disabled following a turn three rollover that required immediate assistance. No injuries were reported.

“When everything stopped there you start thinking which tire is going to seal first,” divulged Wight, after waiting out the 10-minute delay to safely clear the Lawrence car. “We rode the bottom in the beginning of the race so I knew my tires weren't too hot but you always have that in the back of your head wondering if one is going to seal up on you.”

Sheppard shadowed Wight on the ensuing lap 33 restart while Dunn, Tim Fuller, Erick Rudolph and Jimmy Phelps waited for any opening further back. With the top two again close to trading paint, Russell Morseman slowed down the back straightaway to set up a one lap dash for cash with $2,000 awaiting the victor.

Sheppard pulled underneath exiting turn four in a last-lap effort but Wight maintained his momentum, taking the checkers in a bumper-to-bumper finish with the pair even making contact immediately after as the adrenaline carried into turn one. Dunn settled for third ahead of Fuller, Rudolph, Phelps, Justin Haers, Wright, Ryan Susice and Alan Johnson, the only driver to post Top-10 finishes in all 11 events to date.

“Billy was running the top and we were coming up through,” added Wight, on the heals of his fifth career Big-Block win at LOLR, all coming since June 9. “I was able to get underneath enough guys and stay with him. Figured I'd just stay down there and try to conserve (tires) for the first 10 laps at least. It turned out to be enough.”

Pulling into 18th on the starting grid for the Sportsman 25-lapper left little time for Ridley to hold back, yet the open-wheel veteran showed his experience as his no. 20x Fred's Fab'N Fold-Champion Power Equipment-Lakeshore Auto Mall/Bicknell machine grew stronger as the race wore on.

“It was a bit of a struggle in the middle part of the race, I was like 'man, we're not getting anywhere,' didn't understand what was happening,” noted Ridley, 42, who now ranks second all-time (tied with Steve Gray) with 30 wins, behind only Paul Guererri at 45. “Our car felt good, just couldn't get by any other cars.”

“Then the caution (flags) just kept falling and we found the top (lane). We were just as good in the middle as I was around the top but its a lot of fun just beating the balls off it and holding (gas pedal) to the floor all the way around the top so that's what I decided to do,” said Ridley, a two-time track champion in wine country.

Baldwinsville invader Mike Phelps rammed the outside cement retaining wall just shy of the starter's stand to incur an opening lap caution and force a complete restart. Pole-sitter Rick Martin took the top spot back under green yet gave it up to his son after Dalton Martin charged from third to first on lap six using the high line.

While three more yellow flags kept the field bunched in the early going, a lap eight restart proved pivotal for Zach Payne as he blasted from fourth to first before the younger Martin regained the point crossing the line. Ridley moved into sixth with 10 scored and on a lap 12 restart the Waterloo warrior powered into third.

Payne again drove under Martin for the lead on lap 14 while Ridley needed another mile to slide into second between turns three and four. Ridley forged the final lead change exiting turn two on lap 19 at the same time Tim Baker stole third from Martin racing down the back chute.

Rick Martin's night came to a sudden halt on lap 22, forcing out the final yellow flag when his new Bicknell car slammed the uke tire low entering turn one, collecting Cody Manitta in the process. Ridley made short work exhibiting his superiority, building up a commanding 12 car-length advantage at the stripe followed by Payne and Baker (1st Top-10 of season) and A.J. Lloyd, after contact with Dalton Martin pushed him to fourth in the final rundown.

“Once I caught (Payne) I was watching his line and saw him slip up off the bottom there and made the move,” Ridley said. “Still thought we were going to lose the race on that last restart, don't know what happened. When we took off the car was stumbling and didn't clean out until we got to the flagstand. Thought it might do it again going into turn one but it never happened and we were good the rest of the way.”

“I knew we were good enough to get there (front) through the middle and bottom but to get there quicker we used the top. One and two were a little different but you could really run it around the top in three and four so we're happy with the result,” Ridley added.

Western New Yorker Sam Junkin couldn't be happier after his season debut ended with a trip to victory lane in the 15-lap Sportsman B-Main. Towing his no. 2 Dirt Works-Elma Press-716 Candle Company/Bicknell ride east from Marilla (SW of Darien Lake), Junkin overtook Texas traveler Chaz Thompson on lap seven and cruised home for a comfortable straightaway victory in his first race of 2020.

“I was watching the Big-Blocks and saw Larry and Matt and they went up high, then saw the beginning of the Sportsman feature with the #132 (Dalton Martin) making up ground on top so I said why not not give it a shot,” revealed Junkin, 26, who failed to qualify in his lone attempt at LOLR last season as a rookie.

“So I tried the top side and it stuck and I just kept my foot on it. Learned not to be a ***** on the bottom as there's a high side that's really pretty too. Its the first time I ever won a race going on the outside. We were really just using today as practice, think we got something good here now,” Junkin added.

Returning to his preferred high lane around the hallowed half-miler, Whipple confirmed he has a good car, especially after outlasting two-time winner Alysha Bay for the popular 20-lap MEM 305 victory.

“The (grounds) crew did a fantastic job with the track tonight, they brought the top (groove) in for me and that's where I belong, up top,” beamed Whipple, 46, the LOLR 305 points champion in 2017 when he logged all five of his previous sprint car wins. “Been trying the bottom the past couple weeks and it just hasn't worked out so we went back up where we belong … that was awesome.”

Rochester regular Steve Glover paced the pack ahead of Kyle Pierce, Ethan Gray and Bay as they battled three-wide leaving little room to err. Whipple wasted little time in his jaunt forward, darting from sixth to third on the opening circuit then blasting high around Glover rounding turn four to forge the final lead change on lap five.

Pierce appeared to be the fastest on the track after passing Glover by the midway point yet with 10 laps in the books Whipple still authored a 4-second advantage. Bay slid under Glover for third on lap 14 and after a smoking Gray machine brought out the only caution she stole second from Pierce on the lap 15 restart.

The Shortsville sprinter was up to the challenge, pulling away in his Paul Gavenda-powered #38 Bauer's Garage-Nu-Way Auto Parts-Termotto's Homescape/Maxim machine for a solid five car-length victory over Bay followed by Pierce, Glover and Darryl Ruggles.

“Was waiting for Ruggles (actually Bay in the #48A as the scoreboard read 48 and Ruggles is 48jr.) to slide me in one as we had turns three and four down pat but one and two were beating me,” recalled Whipple, who had just a single top-5 tally in his first four events, missing the initial three shows due to COVID-19 concerns and his father's health issues. “Yet knew if I kept it smooth we were good. Can't thank my crew, our sponsors and again the track team for giving us the chance.”

“The track crew got some bite up top, yet not too high. Their watering and packing (during intermission) made all the difference for me. Been a long time coming since we were last in victory lane, didn't know if it was ever going to happen again,” added a relieved Whipple, who returned for '20 trading in his black car for white, a proven remedy for any ailments endured over the past three years.

Flint Flies To CRSA Victory At Penn Can, Dedicates Win To Pete Richardson

CRSA Sprints Media Contact: Steven Ovens – turnfivemedia@gmail.com

Press Release – August 23rd, 2020 – Turn 5 Media photo

(SUSQUEHANNA, PA) – Penn Can Speedway has been awful good to Josh Flint in his Super Gen Products CRSA Sprints career. His last CRSA win was at “The Can” on October 15, 2016, with the quarter-mile track making up fifty percent of his tour wins. During CRSA’s July visit o Penn Can, Flint picked off seven cars to win the Eagle Enterprise, LLC Hard Charger Award.

Fast forward to a flawless night on Friday, the tour win column now shows three and the percentage of wins at Gary Folk’s Penn Can Speedway went up to sixty-six percent.

The only thing that Flint missed out on Friday night was a heat race win. The driver out of Cherry Valley, NY started fifth in his heat and made the Top 12 redraw by finishing third. With the stars aligning in the Susquehanna, PA skies- Flint drew the pole for the 25-lap A-Main.

Flint was intent on leaving absolutely no doubt, leading the opening three laps and putting a good distance on Dana Wagner’s No. 25w who advanced from the third starting position to second on the start. Lap 3 would see the event slowed to a halt with the red flag being displayed.

Thomas Radivoy was working hard to recover from drawing the tenth starting position and was working the outside cushion in Turn 3 with brute force. As he approached Turn 4 the right rear tire caught the cushion wrong and turned his Country Service Center No. 1Q hard to the right toward the track’s embankment. With Radivoy still hard on the gas, his Triple X chassis went airborne over the embankment causing severe damage, ending his night although Radivoy would be ok.

Once back under the green, Flint kept a safe distance in front of Wagner as two additional yellow flags slowed the field. Behind the battle for the race lead, Alysha Bay and Ethan Gray were dicing it up for the final spot on the podium.

Bay found traction down along the inside concrete wall, while the Rookie sensation out of Manchester, NY was trying to figure out how he could ride the cushion to sweep by off Turn 4. Gray would eventually get the fast line figured out and got by one of his mentors to take over third.

Sydney Prince was a part of that battle as well in her first start with CRSA this season. Prince won her heat race walking away and would cross the line at the checkered flag inside the Top 5. Unfortunately, Prince bypassed the scales post-race, resulting in a disqualification per CRSA rules.

Flint kept Wagner at arm’s reach to secure his third CRSA victory at the checkered flag. Gray held on for his career best CRSA finish with an impressive podium effort. Bay and Trevor Years filled out the top five- a much needed highlight for Years after having transmission troubles and a trailer flat tire on the way to the track.

“I was on the phone with Jason Barney tonight a lot, he’s helped me so much on this car since we switched over to X1,” reflected Flint in Victory Lane. But the emotion of the moment was quite evident.

“This win is for Pete Richardson. We got to race with him quite a bit in Patriots and he was just a great guy. This one is for him.”

Flint picked up an extra $100 courtesy of the Ruggles Racing crew who put the winner bonus up in Richardson’s memory.

For Dana Wagner, there were a lot of positives to take away even after coming up one spot short. Last time at Penn Can, Wagner went home with a tenth place finish and a damaged racecar.

“I’m pretty happy with second, we came home in one piece and the better guy won tonight. Tonight was way better than last time.”

Ethan Gray, his crew and his followers back home in New York were just ecstatic.

“Turn 3 and 4 seems to always bug me a little bit (here at Penn Can) but I got it figured out. This is awesome!”

“It’s Kinser Hill at ‘The Hill Speedway’, Young Driver Score Career First Win in Crate Sportsman Division” by Carol Houssock

On another beautiful Friday night fans and race teams flocked to The Hill Speedway for a seven-division show, sponsored by WOC Energy. Winners with just two points races remaining included Kinser Hill (Snell Metalfab Crate Sportsmen), Bobby Maynard (Street Stocks), Gary Lamphere (IMCA Modifieds), Matt Browning (FWD), AJ Lane (RWD), Chad Homan (Crate Sportsmen) and Mike Morse (Pure Stocks). Racing resumes this Friday night at the ¼-mile speed plant.

The Snell Metalfab Crate Sportsman division had seen five different winners in 2020. On Friday night a young man turned the place into ‘Kinser Hill Speedway’ with his powerful and dominating performance in their 20-lap feature. Heat wins went to Connor Brown and Joe Guastella to help set the field that found Kinser Hill starting in P1 with Guastella alongside. The first of seven cautions came on the opening lap when Dalton Maynard nearly hit the turn one wall. Through lap 12 it was Hill and Guastella leading the way. Tony Harris made some awesome moves, moved up to third, then he maneuvered the 9Cat to take second from Guastella. Behind that lead duo the racing was intense and involved Jason Benjamin, Rich Talada and Maynard. The final seven laps were run caution-free and fans watched the flawless run of Kinser Hill as he took the checkered flag with his career-first win over Harris, Talada, Benjamin and Guastella.

Things changed big-time for two drivers in the Street Stock division, one for the better and one for the worse. When Doug Stack, Jr. arrived at the track he was the point leader with seven feature wins. Earl Zimmer, second in points, arrived minus a car. Promoter Ed McKernan won his heat then turned the car over to Zimmer for the feature. It was a few minutes later when things changed. Heat winner John McAdam started from pole and led the first two laps before breaking. That brought Dan Force to the point for the restart where he led just lap three. On the next restart Bobby Maynard and Stack made a sandwich of Force and Maynard led. But he only led one lap as Stack got around him. A series of cautions slowed the action but not Stack, who went on to pick up the win. Post-race tech found Stack had an illegal engine and he was disqualified. That gave the win to Bobby Maynard, his first this year. Lou Sharpsteen, Force, Jakub Ingham and Bill Tice rounded out the revised top five. For Zimmer, the ride in McKernan’s car and seventh place finish keeps his title hopes alive.

Tangles on the opening and closing laps of the IMCA Modified feature did nothing to distract Gary Lamphere, who provided a picture-perfect drive to capture his first win this year. The race belonged to him and as he pulled away, he left behind an intense battle for positions two through six. Brad Sites ran second with Jake Maynard, Eddie Sites, Keith Jack Lamphere, and Keith Lamphere running nose-to-tail for many laps. As the white flag waved, it appeared they would finish pretty much in that order. Gary Lamphere took the checkered flag, but several cars got together coming out of turn three. That changed the final running order. Brad Sites did finish second, followed in this one by Keith Jack Lamphere, Keith Lamphere, and JW Lamphere. Point leader Jake Maynard got caught up in that late incident, lost four positions to finish eighth, and his 19-point edge over Keith Jack Lamphere is now about half what it was.

Four different drives led the FWD feature but for three of them it was for just a lap or two. Matt Browning’s fast #8 started the feature in position eight but he wasted no time moving up. Josh Bailey and Browning both got around early leader Greg McKernan on lap five. But on lap six Bailey lost the top spot and Browning never looked back. Adam Delgrosso was also moving toward the front and had one final shot at the leader when caution flew with four laps remaining. Browning prevailed and won his eighth feature, including six in a row. Delgrosso had to settle for second, with Bailey, McKernan and Greg Slater finishing in the top five.

In RWD action, AJ Lane likely thought ‘give me five’ a time or two leading up to their feature. Shawn Gowin started from pole position and led the opening lap after it took two tries to get rolling. Lane took over on lap two and had to hold off challenges during two subsequent caution periods. The first of those came when two laps cars got together just as he approached them. He managed to get by and then hold off Larry Colton on the restart. The final caution came when Andrew Collins spun and set up a four-lap dash to the finish. Lane picked up where he left off and sailed to Jamie Tuttle’s checkered flag for his fifth win this year. While his car won the title last year with Joe behind the wheel, this year AJ is on track to make it two in a row for the powerful 4 car. Colton held on for second, ahead of Anton Smith, Zach Bruce and Trevor Belcher.

The new Crate Late Models proved you could run a caution-free 20-lap race Friday night. Darrin Horton capitalized on his pole-position start and kept Chad Homan behind him for most of the first half. Homan found what he wanted and got past Horton on lap 12. For the remainder of the race the gap between first and second widened as Homan’s car was perfectly hooked up. The win was his sixth of the season, this time coming over Horton, heat winner Steve LaBarron, Tony Kelley and Ernie Martin. Horton remains the point leader over LaBarron.

Cautions, eight of them, and Mike Morse ruled the Pure Stock feature Friday night. Josh Parker had the pole and led the opening lap but caution bunched the field back up. On the restart Morse and Cole Burgess made Parker sandwich the took him from first to third behind that pair. Zach Kriner, meanwhile, slowly and steadily advanced through the field and took over third when Mike Chilson got caught up in a multiple car melee on caution six with twelve laps complete. Morse prevailed on that and one additional restart, keeping Burgess as his main chaser over the final eight laps. This time Morse defeated Burgess, Kriner, Casey McPherson and Chilson. In a division whose rules were established by car owners, Morse remains undefeated in points races at the track.

This Friday, Snell Metalfab is sponsoring a full show with 20-lap features for all seven divisions. Pit and spectator gates open at 5pm, with practice at 6:30, and racing scheduled to get the green flag at 7:00.

THE HURRICANE, STEVE PAINE PICKS UP FEATURE WIN NUMBER 2 AT OUTLAW SPEEDWAY.
Ajay Potrzebowski Sr gets win four in American Racer Tire Sportsman, Glen Whritenour and Jared Hill in Street Stocks. Alex Payne in Hoosier Tire Sportsman and Kevin Smith in IMCA Modifieds each bag second wins of season.  Kenneth Evans grabs first 4 Cylinder victory and Wayne Ellison in Hobby Stocks continues to be unstoppable with win number eight on the season.  Ethan Decker continues to dominate Bandit Class.
Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.
(Dundee, NY) For the second time in 2020, Hurricane Steve Paine was able to work his way into the Outlaw Speedway victory lane.  Lance Dusett and Boss Man, Tyler Siri brought the twenty- car field to the opening green flag for the thirty- lap event.  Siri would immediately jump into the lead which he would hold down thru numerous caution flags which would slow the race. Steve Paine and Alan Johnson who both have visited victory lane at Outlaw Speedway in 2020 lined up eighth and tenth respectively while current second place point man, Danny Johnson started eleventh. All eyes were again on Super Matt Sheppard who would line up twelfth on the grid and by lap seven was already up to the seventh position.  Track owner, Tyler Siri had put up an additional $2,000 to any driver that could upend Super Matt and go onto the feature win.  However, with Sheppard suffering serious right side damage to his potent 9s machine while coming thru traffic he made yellow flag pit stops to try and have the problem rectified finally exited the event on lap seventeen and was officially listed in the fifteenth position and with that the Bounty Money continues onto next Friday.  While out in front Siri was continuing to set a blistering pace, but Paine, the brothers Johnson and Eric Rudolph were starting to climb up the leaderboard and with the help of caution flags on laps fifteen, seventeen and twenty allowed them to keep Siri within the cross hairs.  Finally, on lap twenty-three, Hurricane Paine was able to set Siri up for the winning pass and from there went on to back up his first feature win of 2020 on July 17.  Once out in front, Paine was able to stretch the advantage to a full three seconds as he cruised to the win.  Boss Man, Siri was able to hold off a hard charging Jim LaRock to claim the second spot with LaRock trailed at the line for third.  Kyle Coffey put on the drive of the night as the pilot of the Sweeteners Plus machine started fifteenth on the grid, took full advantage of the caution flags, moved thru traffic and claimed another top five by finishing fourth.  AJ Slideways, Alan Johnson bested brother Doctor Danny Johnson by one spot to round out the top five.
The evening got started off with the Stans No Tubes Street Stock make-up feature from July 10.  Glen Whritenour, like Super Matt Sheppard had Bounty Money placed on him for any driver that can stop his current five race win streak.  In the twenty-lap event Aaron Miller would grab the opening lead which he would hold on to for just one lap before CJ Guererri would take over the top spot. Guererri looked poised to pick up his second feature win of the season building up a sizeable lead.  However, Whritenour had other ideas and although starting in the tenth spot, GW quickly moved thru traffic and was running third by the halfway mark of the twenty-lap affair.  It took the potent number 15 machine just one lap to dispose of the second-place machine of John Carpenter and on lap twelve cleared Guererri for the lead and from there would open the advantage.  Only one caution flag on lap sixteen would slow the pace and allow Guererri one last shot at Whritenour, but it was to no avail as GW coasted to his seventy-feature win of 2020 and sixth straight.  Guererri held on for second at the finish chased across the line by Jared Hill, Quinn Sutherland and Aksel Jensen who completed the top five.  With that the Bounty Money would now roll over to the regular night feature event.
In the night cap CJ Guererri and Jared Hill would bring the fifteen- car field to the opening green flag with Whritenour mired down in starting spot number eleven.  Hill would immediately move into the lead and at the half way mark of the twenty-lap feature he was still holding court at the top while being chased by Jake Karlnoski and Whritenour who was now up to third, however that is as far as GW would get as on lap eleven he would suffer thru mechanical issues, drop back thru the field and finally exit the speedway on lap fifteen and was credited with a ninth place finish.  However, while not on the lead lap and running at the finish the Bounty Cash rolls over till next Friday.  With the fifth and final yellow flag waving on lap thirteen, Hill just needed to keep his nose clean as with both Karlnoski and Whritenour now out all he had to do was keep Guererri at bay to pick up his first win of the season.  For Hill, Guererri and third place finisher, Quinn Sutherland and fifth place runner, Aksel Jensen it was a very good night as all four finished in the top five in both feature events.  Bob Buono chased Sutherland across the line to claim fourth while Jensen was fifth at the double checkers.
In the Sunrise Insulation American Racer Tire Sportsman feature Casey Williams would jump into the early lead and would hold the top spot until lap six when three time 2020 feature winner, Ajay Potrzebowski would wrestle away the lead, withstand four cautions and one red flag that would slow the event and go on to the win.  The red flag stopped the event for nearly twenty minutes as a bone jarring crash found current high point man, Chris Fisher taking a violent flip.  In all some eight machines were included in the melee including second place point getter, Zach Sobotka along with Kaiden Dgien, Billy Paine, and invader, Jim Spano who were all done for the night.  After the track was cleared Potrzebowski would continue to build on his lead as two more caution flags would slow the pace on laps eleven and fifteen.  From there it was clear sailing for Potrzebowski as he went on to feature win number four on the year as he was followed across the line by early race leader, Casey Williams who had his best finish of the year.  Third place went to Travis Grover, Kevin Stevens in his first appearance was fourth while Alex Payne rounded out the top five finishers.
In the Hoosier Tire Sportsman Division Casey Williams and Travis Grover who both do double duty in the two sportsman classes would lead the twenty -car field to the opening green flag in their twenty-five-lap event.  Like he did on American Racer Tires, Williams would again take the top spot on Hoosier Tires and lead the opening five circuits.  Grover would take control from there and lead the next ten laps before fifth place starter, Alex Payne would wrestle away the lead from Grover and go on to his second feature win on Hoosier Tires this season.  Zach Sobotka would recover from his incident in the earlier evening American Racer Tire train wreck to claim third at the finish and maintain his current point lead in the class as he was chased across the line by Tommy Collins Jr. and Will Shields who ironically sit second and third in the points. In all some seven caution flags would slow the event, but for Payne it again was a stellar night with his win on Hoosiers and a fifth on American Racer Tires.
In the IMCA Modified Division Kevin Smith would start outside of the front row, take the lead early and go onto his second feature event win of the 2020 season backing up his previous win on July 17.  Rodney Morgan who came into the night with five feature wins on the season and looking to make it two in a row came up a bit short at the line and had to settle for second place as he was followed across the line by one time feature winners in Shawn Bruce and Bad Brad Smith who finished third and fourth while Jared Spaulding claimed fifth at the finish of the twenty lap main.
In Mighty 4 Cylinder feature action, Kenneth Evans would take full advantage of his outside front row starting position to claim his first trip to victory lane in 2020.  For Evans it was by no means a walk in the park as he had to withstand pressure from four-time feature winner, Bob Doolittle in claiming the victory.  In fact, outside of Doolittle’s second place finish the top five was littered with previous 2020 feature winners as Scott Lehman Jr. nailed the third spot, four- time feature winner Jeremy Bunn came home fourth as Ray Hyer rounded out the top five.  It was a well -deserved win for Kenneth Evans as he held off the very best that the class has to offer.
The IMCA Hobby Stock feature found a familiar face once again taking the feature win as Wayne Ellison was able to mow the field down from his sixth row starting spot and go onto claim feature win eight on the year.  Brian Lloyd and Casey Wagner brought the seventeen car field to the opening green flag, but most eyes were on the top guns in the class with Bruce Kinner lining up ninth, two time and defending class champion, Marc Minutolo in tenth and Ellison in twelfth.  Consistent runner Jeremy Trank lined up outside the third starting row.  With Minutolo having problems and finishing well back that left the door wide open for the remainder of the field and like he has done seven previous times this season, Wayne Ellison was just to much for the competition to handle as he got to the front and left everyone else fighting for second place.  At the finish it was once again Jeremy Trank coming up just one spot shy of winning his first feature win of the year as he claimed the runner up spot.  Bruce Kinner continues to keep pace with Ellison in the point standings as another consistent third place run will keep in second in the point tally.  Casey Wagner ran inside the top five all feature event and wound up fourth at the end while Amber Pierce was able to hold off sister, Allison Pierce to claim fifth at the completion of the twenty-lap feature.
In the Winners Circle Deli Youth Bandit Division Ethan Decker was able to hold off Abby Decker for yet another feature win and with that solidifying his huge point advantage in the class as the weeks continue to wind down.
Congratulations to all competitors.
Coming up next Friday, August 21 it will be a Regular Super 7 Show with another make up feature from July 10 included on the agenda.  As per NYS regulations there are still no fans allowed into the grandstand seating area, however those that cannot attend in the pit area, visual coverage of the event can be found on DirtTrackDigest.TV.

BRANDON LOUCKS WINS INSINGER CRATE SPORTSMAN FEATURE AT FIVE MILE POINT SPEEDWAY IN DOMINATING FASHION.
KIRKWOOD, NY…Brandon Loucks recorded his first Five Mile Point Speedway victory of the season on Saturday night in the Insinger Performance Crate Sportsman main event.  Other winners were:  Justin Slezak, Bob Hamm, Jason Colwell, Doug Newbigging, Aiden Elliot and Avery Decker.  Once again the event was run without spectators due to the ongoing New York State Covid-19 guidelines.  The victory for Loucks made him the ninth different Insinger Performance Crate Sportsman winner in ten races.
The 20 lap Crate Sportsman feature event started off shaky as twenty-two of the scheduled twenty-four starters made the grid.  At the drop of the green Matt Sobiech took advantage over Tom Hampton but it was short lived.  As the two exited turn two Hampton got a run and made contact spinning Sobiech around in front of the field.  Sobiech managed to do a 360 degree spin and pick up his momentum as the caution flew.  Sobiech would restart sixth where he picked up on the field with the spin.
The restart found a new front row in Blaine Klinger and Brandon Loucks.  At the drop of the green Loucks used the racy outside of the speedway to immediately take advantage.  Once Loucks took the lead he never looked back as he opened up a ten car length lead over Klinger.  Klinger ran in second as his weekly battle with point leader Gary Smith continued for the second position.  This allowed Loucks to pull further ahead as that duo battled lap after lap.
As the race hit the halfway mark Loucks continued to use the high side of the speedway to his advantage.  A number of great battles took shape throughout the pack as the race remained under green flag conditions.  Loucks would go on unchallenged to become the ninth different winner in ten races this season.  Klinger held off Smith for second.  Tyler Johnston drove from ninth to record fourth with Russell Benke, Jr. rounding out the top five.  Positions six through ten were filled by Joe Gustella, Matt Brewer, Sobiech, Seth Zacharias and Brandon Fritsch.  After the caution on the start of the feature the race went 20 laps without another caution.
Justin Slezak led wire to wire in the 20 lap Factory Stock feature event on Saturday.  For Slezak it was his third feature win of the season.  Ray Lindquist ran in second the entire race and kept close but could not make a serious challenge for the victory.  Slezak and Lindquist were followed across the stripe by Tommy Groover and Adam Gilbert.  Josh Towner finished fifth.
The 600 Modidifed 20 lap feature event was won by Bob Hamm.  Hamm took the lead from Dave Brown on lap 2 and never looked back leading the balance of the way.  Jason Sullivan rebounded from an early race spin to take second place.  Eli Akshar had another solid run by finishing third with Josh Mudge and Ayden Morgan completing the top five. A $150 bounty had been put in place on three time winner Brett Gray but Gray dropped out late in the event so the bounty will carry over to this Saturday night.
Jason Colwell recorded his first win of the year in the 15 lap FWD Four Cylinder Expert Feature event.  Colwell led the entire way to capture the win.  Dave Sims chased him down the entire 20 laps and wound up second.  Jock Symonds, Caleb Lacey and Kenny Underwood completed the top five.  Underwood bounced back from twice having his steering wheel come unattached to record fifth.  Four-time winner Tim Vandemark had a $150 bounty on him that will now continue an extra week as he dropped out with a broken axle late in the race.
Doug Newbigging recorded the win in the 12 lap FWD Four Cylinder Novice feature event.  He led the entire distance over second place finisher Gregg Slater.  Owen Clark, Bethany Bertram and Austin Slater completed the top five.
Third generation family racer Aiden Elliott notched his first ever win in the nightcap 20 lap Crate Sportsman Futures Division.  Elliott led every lap to claim the victory for that long time racing family.  Josh Mondak, Ned Fitch, Kyle Walsh and Eric Reese Jr. completed the top five.
Avery Decker was the Junior 600 Modified winner.
Racing continues this Saturday night as a regular program is on the card as well as the Northeast Classic Dirt Modifieds.  Saturday, August 29th will then end the regular season at the speedway prior to a new fall series starting in mid-September.

Late season points battles heated up in most Hill Speedway divisions as close finishes were the norm on NAPA Auto Parts Night. Rich Powell held off repeated challenges to record his first feature win of the season in the Snell Metalfab Crate Sportsman,  a late race pass for the lead gave Doug Stack Jr. his fifth Street Stock feature win in a row, and Matt Browning matched Stack's record by topping the Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder feature. Mike Morse stayed perfect in the Pure Stocks, unbeaten in points races this season and Keith Jack Lamphere passed the IMCA style Modified points leader at the two to go signal to take his division's flag. Chad Homan moved forward in the points standings with his win in Crate Late Model division,  and after two runnerup finishes in a row, A.J. Lane got back to Victory Lane in the Rear Wheel Drive Four Cylinders.

Rich Powell overpowered Kinser Hill to  lead lap one, and held onto the top spot to tighten up the point standings in the Snell Metalfab Crate Sportsman. Hill was victem of mechanical failure on the fourth circuit and Tony Harris moved into the second spot. Geoff Powell powered into the second spot on lap six, and kept the pressure on his brother for the remainder of the event. Harris, Rich Talada, and Dalton Maynard battled the third spot, until Maynard also succumbed to mechanical woes with four laps to go. Quentin Buchanan crossed the finish line fifth, but was disqualified by tech officials and Chris Clemens was credited with fifth.
FEATURE FINISH: Rich Powell, Geoff Powell, Tony Harris, Rich Talada, Chris Clemens, Eric Jensen,  Braden Buchanan,  Dalton Maynard,  Kinser Hill,  Jason Benjamin, Joe Gurastella, Quentin Buchanan.
Heats : Kinser Hill, Tony Harris

Street Stock rookie Jakub Ingham grabbed the early lead from his front row starting spot, fighting back challenges by Bobby Maynard, Lou Sharpsteen, and Eddie McKernan. Points leader Doug Stack Jr. pulled to Ingham's bumper on lap 10, but it took four laps to make the pass. Ingham didn't make it easy for the new leader, as he shadowed Stack closely for the remaining laps. Dustin Maynard ran strong in the top five for much of the race, and crossed the finish line in third. Doug Stack Sr. ended a steady run in fourth, and Earl Zimmer rounded out the top five.
FEATURE FINISH: Doug Stack Jr. , Jakub Ingram, Dustin Maynard, Doug Stack Sr., Earl Zimmer,  Bobby Maynard, Eddie McKernan, Lou Sharpsteen,  Dave Roberts,  Bill Tice, Trevor Williams, John McAdam, Bobby Hall Jr., Mike Koser, Howard Bailey,  Thomas Moon,  Dan Force,  Ricky Davis, Dylan Hinkley
Heats: Jakub Ingram, Eddie McKernan

Dillon Maryott, Greg McKernan,  Adam Delgrosso, and Brad Benjamin started a four car lead debate at the drop of the green flag in the Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder feature, with Matt Browning joining the group by the third lap. On lap four, Browning was fourth, third on the fifth lap, second on lap six, and out front to score lap seven. The rest of the field tried, but Browning held on to pick up his seventh win of the season. Adam Delgrosso overpowered McKernan to lock onto second. Benjamin took over the third spot with four laps remaining,  and Josh Bailey led Maryott across the line.
FEATURE FINISH: Matt Browning,  Adam Delgrosso,  Brad Benjamin,  Josh Bailey,  Dillon Maryott, John Maynard, Mike Wilcox,  Randy Lane, Dakota Decker,  Greg McKernan,  Greg Slater,  Kenny Benjamin Jr., Jake Lamphere,  Steve Castle, Ryan Wood.
Heats: Brad Benjamin,  Matt Browning

Mike Morse grabbed the top spot on the first lap of the Pure Stock feature and led every lap to keep his record perfect for 2020 in being undefeated in feature races. Cole Burgess and Bobby Maynard tried to keep the pressure on throughout, but Morse was able to maintain the lead. Maynard retired on lap fourteen, leaving Burgess in sole posession of second place. Josh Parker and Donny Burgess entertained the crowd with a spirited battle for third, with Parker in the spot at the finish. Justin Hall drove his Ford Thunderbird to a solid fifth place.
FEATURE FINISH: Mike Morse, Cole Burgess, Josh Parker, Donny Burgess, Justin Hall,  Zack Kriner, Josh Vanderpool,  Bobby Maynard, Tim Perham.
Heat: Donny Burgess

Coming into the night's races, Jake Maynard held a slim nineteen point advantage over Keith Jack Lamphere as the points season winds down. Both driver's stepped up and put their best effort on. Both drivers recorded third place finishes in their qualifying races, and the stage was set for the twenty lap NAPA Auto Parts main event. Maynard took the lead at the first lap,  with Brad Sites tight to his rear bumper. Lamphere fought his way through the pack and by the fifth lap, he was solidly in third,  with the top three in a tight group. Lamphere got by Sites on the fourteenth lap, and challenged for the top spot on every corner. A caution flag on lap eighteen changed everything, as on the restart,  Maynard's car stumbled momentarily, Lamphere shot to the bottom and led the way past the flagstand.  Maynard settled for second at the finish, with Keith Jack recording his third feature win in a row in his quest to unseat the defending champion. Sites crossed third, with Eddie Sites fourth and Ray McClure rounding out the top five.
FEATURE FINISH: Keith Jack Lamphere,  Jake Maynard, Brad Sites,  Eddie Sites,  Ray McClure,  Mark Griffin,  Doug Lantz,  Gary Lamphere,  Keith Lamphere,  Harry Ely, J.W. Lamphere, A.J. Hunsinger

Chad Homan made his first start at The Hill back on June 26, and since then the northern New York pilot has made Victory Lane his home, this night scoring his fifth feature win in a row in the growing Crate Late Model class. John Waters made the over two hour haul to the track and provided stiff competition, but had to settle for second, closely followed by Brian Knowles in his third trip to the speedway. Points leader Darin Horton recorded a strong fourth and dirt track rookie Mike Epler recorded a respectable fifth.
FEATURE FINISH: Chad Homan, John Waters, Brian Knowles,  Darin Horton,  Mike Epler, Steve LaBarron, Ernie Martin,  Joe Lane
Heat: Chad Homan

The points battle in the Rear Wheel Drive Four Cylinders is also a close one with A.J. Lane leading Larry Colton by eleven points. Lane and Colton both won their heats, and were ready for the final feature of the night. Scott Bump set the early pace, with Lane slipping by on the fifth circuit. Colton moved to second two laps later, and the battle was on. Lane held off every challenge, improving on his two second place finishes in the previous weeks by taking the win. Colton, who won last week, settled for second. Anton Smith, in only his second start of 2020 at The HILL , grabbed the third spot on the nineteenth lap, with Bump holding on to fourth. Zach Bruce finished fifth.

STRUNK, DAKOTA KOHLER AND PETERS FEATURE WINNERS FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY ON SATURDAY NIGHT

BECHTELSVILLE, PA. AUGUST 16, 2020 . . .  Jeff Strunk, the “Bechtelsville Bullet,” has been running a Teo chassis car for the past several years and had his share of ups and downs which did include several successful campaigns. Saturday night at Grandview Speedway, the Glenn Hyneman-owned No. 126 team unveiled a brand new Bicknell mount that the crew built in a week. It was fast right off the trailer as he started the evening activities with a win in the third qualifying heat. The 10-time point champion started 12th in the 30-lap T.P. Trailers Modified NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts feature and by the 11th lap he overtook Ray Swinehart for the lead. Strunk wove his way through lapped traffic in the later stages and went on to score his first win of the season by a 6.497 margin over runner-up Mike Gular, also a past champion who also received the Hard Charger award charging from 19th to second.

In the 25-lap T.P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman feature winner Dakota Kohler, who was been close on two different occasions to claiming his first career victory only to be denied, turned the tables and parked his No. 59K in victory lane for his first career win in his rookie season to become the eighth different winner in the division.

Brett Peters won the 15-lap Open Competition Outlaw Vintage Car feature.

Modified and Sportsman feature winners that met the necessary requirements received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Strunk and Kohler. Kohler also earned an extra $100 bonus from the track for being the highest crate engine finisher. Jesse Leiby was the Sportsman Hard Charger going from 20th to fifth.

In Modified action Ray Swinehart passed Darrin Schuler for the lead on the fourth lap restart that was needed when Kyle Weiss spun in the third turn.

By the fifth lap Strunk advanced to second and was giving Swinehart a run for the money.

The lead changed hands on the 11th lap when Strunk dove underneath Swinehart and into the top spot.

The real battle behind Strunk, who was already weaving his way through lap traffic, was hot and heavy between Swinehart, Duane Howard, Mike Gular and Craig Von Dohren – second, 16th, 19th and 15th place starters respectively.

Gular took over the runner-up spot on the 24th lap which was the same position Swinehart, Howard and Von Dohren were vying for making it a four-way battle to see if anyone could reel Strunk in who was setting a torrid pace.

No more restarts were needed so no one was given the opportunity to try and grab first from Strunk and at the drop of the checkered he christened the new mount with his 74th career win. Chasing him across were Gular and Howard. Before Swinehart could cross the line the car broke ending his fourth place run as he dropped to 11th. Von Dohren and Dylan Swinehart then completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Jared Umbenhauer, Doug Manmiller, Ryan Grim, Brett Gilmore and Dillon Steuer.

Justin Grim, Bobby Gunther Walsh, Strunk and Brad Grim won the heats. Consi winners were Ryan Grim and Ron Kline.

Sportsman action saw polesitter and rookie Mark Gaugler lead for two laps before the red was thrown for a massive homestretch incident which made it look like a parking lot after some of the front runners got jostled around. When action went green again Kohler was at the head of the pack followed by Parker Guldin, Jack Butler, Brian Hirthler, the current point leader and Jesse Leiby.

By the ½ way marker Kohler was way ahead and Butler was now second in pursuit of him.

With two laps to go Butler reeled in Kohler since Kohler was somewhat hampered by the slower traffic and Butler was putting an all-out effort to pass him.

Coming in for the checkered Butler made a valiant effort to grab first, but fell short by 0.147 seconds. Third was Brian Hirthler followed by Guldin, who finally had a change of luck and finished a feature race and Jesse Leiby. Rounding out the top ten were Kyle Lilick, Brad Arnold, Chris Esposito, Kyle Smith and Mark Kemmerer.

Heat winners were Kenny Bock, Hirthler and Mike Mammana. The consi was won by Kyle Lilick.

In the Vintage class that sported how the cars looked years ago, Brett Peters won the event followed by Wes Cassel, Scott Schaeffer, the winner in a previous outing; Jon Lines and Dave Dissinger.

The battle for the NASCAR championships continues on Saturday night, August 22nd, with another action filled doubleheader featuring the T.P.Trailers NASCAR Modifieds and the T.P.Truck Equipment, all part of the Advance Auto Parts NASCAR Weekly Series.

Spectator gates swing open at 5:30 pm. With the first racing event getting the green flag at 7:30 p.m. Adult admission for the tripleheader is just $15 while youngsters under 12 are admitted free. Pit admission with license is $35 and without $40.

Reminder: No NASCAR license is required for crew or fans. Drivers can purchase temporary licenses good for one event or 15 day license.

Lap sponsorships, $20 each, for the 50th annual Freedom 76, set for Saturday September 19, remain available by contacting Tommy Kramer or Tina Rogers at the track. Checks covering the laps to be sponsored, along with wording for the lap or laps, should be made payable to Grandview Speedway and mailed to 87 Wilt Road, Bechtelsville, PA 19505. “I shut the right front (brake) off a little bit for a while but it didn't really seem to help,” revealed Sheppard, who led Phelps by seven car-lengths in the final rundown. “(Car) just didn't want to steer but still we're happy to be back in victory lane at Canandaigua. Can't thank all my sponsors enough, got a lot of people and a lot of fans, definitely couldn't do it without all of them.”

“Kinda felt like I got into a little bit of a rhythm again there, didn't feel great but felt comfortable. But then the last couple restarts they were nerve-racking because I felt like this (car) was pushing twice as bad as it was before them. But in the end it worked out for us and we're thankful for that,” added Sheppard, now with a win, two runner-up tallies and an 8th-place finish in his four starts this summer.

Spending much of the summer shadowing Street Stock points leader Josh Pangrazio and twice overtaking him with late-race heroics, Grant lead all 20 laps to pocket $500 for his third win of the season in Ontario County. While Welch may have appeared faster in the closing stages, the 81-time winner was unable to find the faster way around the 'Wild Willy Special' in the 10-minute main.

“My guys set the car up for the end of the night and and man they nailed it,” beamed Grant, 34, in a jammed victory lane celebration packed with family, friends, crew and supporters. “I didn't try running anywhere else, just stayed on the bottom all race. It was working for me so I didn't go anywhere else. You just rolled in and literally didn't even touch the gas until you got through (turns) … lift off going into three then maybe go quarter throttle after that. A lot different (surface) than what we're used to running at the end of the night.”

The feature went from green to yellow at the start when first-time entry Dave Bansmar spun low exiting turn one before Jared Hill got airborne after climbing the inside turn three cement barrier without a single lap scored. Grant wasted little time advancing from third when the green lights returned, out-gunning pole-sitter and another newcomer Lanson Albanese to grab the lead.

Welch moved to second on lap three while Marc Minutolo, Pangrazio and Blane Smith, in a car swap with son Parker, settled into the top-5 with a handful of laps in the books. Grant increased his margin to five car-lengths halfway through, but when Chris Beyea spun out between turns one and two in front of the leaders on lap 11, a fire was lit under runner-up Welch that burned brighter as the laps dwindled.

As Grant was stubborn to retreat from his preferred inside line, lap after lap Welch made his presence known testing the outside lane. Yet despite Canandaigua's all-time stock car winner stuck to his bumper, the black #36 Hands Performance & Powder Coating-Champion Scrap Chevrolet Monte Carlo never waivered and the popular Penn Yan pilot held on for a three car-length victory, his fourth career in Canandaigua.

The running order of Minutolo and Pangrazio remained intact while Quinn Sutherland rallied from 15th in the 17-car line-up to salvage a front-five finish in the nightcap.

“Saw Mike and he showed me his nose, that just made me push it a little harder, so we got the win,” added Grant matter-of-factly. “Saw him coming out of (turn) two high, that's why I knew I had to pick up the pace a little bit. And low was the place to go for me the rest of the way.”

Janczuk 3rd To 1st On Final Lap In Land Of Legends Thursday Thriller
Sheppard & Grant take checkers after narrow wins in final mid-week show of season

*Matt Sheppard victory lane photo attachment by Don Romeo

Canandaigua, NY – Aug. 13, 2020 – Tom Skibinski, Land of Legends Raceway PR

Another hot summer night produced yet another barn-burner at Land Of Legends Raceway and when the 'Thursday Groundpounders Spectacular' ended on this occasion it was a pair of Matts surviving nail-biters in the spirited special presented by Honeoye Auto Parts.

Matt Janczuk wove his way from third to first over the final circuit to capture the 25-lap Speed Connection Sportsman showstopper while Matt Sheppard staved off every effort thrown at him by Erick Rudolph the final ten miles to take top honors in the 40-lap Pepsi Big-Block Modified main.

The excitement never abated in the full-fender finale as second-year speedway stalwart Jimmy Grant turned back numerous challenges from veteran Mike Welch to secure the coveted Street Stock victory.

The intrusion of COVID-19 has certainly created an odd calendar of motorsports events in Canandaigua this season, with a third of the shows staged mid-week instead of the traditional weekend fare most familiar to fans and racers alike.

Janczuk found nothing strange in a rare trip to wine country after leading less than a quarter-mile to win his fifth feature (2 each at Can-Am & Utica-Rome speedways) of this unprecedented pandemic-shortened season, his first-ever at the historic Ontario Co. Fairgrounds oval in dramatic fashion.

“I told Paul (Cole, LOLR Promoter) this place has had me doomed for a long time,” remarked Janczuk, 36, after collecting the $1,000 winner's share. “A little bit of luck played into our hand there but its just a testament to this team and everyone that's come on board.”

“Not a lot of experience here but we've had a couple top-5s. Just not hitting on all 8 (cylinders) earlier in the heat race but we made some adjustments … just one heckuva race. Too bad the fans weren't filling the stands to see it, a great race,” added Janczuk, who last season finished fourth in the June Sportsman Series race before settling for second behind 2019 LOLR points champion Kevin Root in the Series return to the fairgrounds in September.

First-year track regular Torrey Stoughtenger led the opening lap despite Mike Fowler briefly locking bumpers to get sideways out of turn one to force out a yellow flag and require a complete restart. With racers in the 26-car field dicing three-wide in his rear-view mirror, Stoughtenger remained on the point after the restart, chased early by front row partner Alex Payne and third starting Nick Guererri.

Pulling seventh on the grid, Janczuk passed Western NY runner Andrew Smith for fourth on lap seven then set his sights on Payne as Stoughtenger and Guererri had built up a big advantage with 10 laps complete. Stoughtenger slid high in turn two to open the door for Guererri two laps later while Janczuk and Root took over third and fourth by the halfway mark.

C.J. Castelletti looped his no. 117jr. machine on lap 17 and on the ensuing restart contact between Janczuk and Root down the frontstretch knocked Root off the pace to end his night (25th) in the pits with a flat left-rear tire. Back under green, Kyle Inman blasted from seventh to third aboard his potent no. 20K Troyer mount, and with 20 laps on the scoreboard the trio of Guererri, Janczuk and Inman pulled away from the pack as Stoughtenger faded to battle it out with Payne.

Inman swept high into second on lap 21 and with chief starter Scott Hixson unfurling the white flag nosed ahead of Guererri across the line to lead lap 24. Yet in a sudden surge of strength down low, Janczuk dove under Guererri exiting turn two. The DIRTcar star from Durhamville wasn't done yet, carrying his momentum under Inman out of turn three and putting the #33x Finish Line Designs-Fastline Performance-Holy Smoke BBQ/Bicknell entry out front with a hundred yards to go.

“The car was real tight on the bottom of (turns) three and four but I knew I couldn't give up,” Janczuk said. “Kyle rolled the outside there so I knew I had to move around because Guererri was real fast. I knew we were real good on the bottom of one and two but it was such a fine line and I had to hit it perfect … and that last lap we hit it perfect.”

“Not sure, might have bumped (Root) on the frontstretch, he was squeezing the outside of me. There was bite coming off the bottom and we slid up. Don't know what happened to him if he got a flat or what, but we did make a little bit of contact. Finally nice to get a win here, hope to be back again before the (Series) show in September,” Janczuk added.

Inman and Guererri followed Janczuk across the line with Payne and two-time LOLR winner Zach Sobotka next in line. Stoughtenger, track points leader Matt Guererri, Garrison Krentz, 16 year-old Payton Talbot and 20th starting Kevin Ridley rounded out the top-10.

Noah Walker from Wheatfield copped his second Sportsman B-Main of the 2020 campaign, leading all but the first time around steering his no. 22 Military Road Save-A-Lot /Bicknell ride in the 15-lap curtain-closer.

“Its all about laps for us, trying to learn something new every time out,” Walker said. “Its a very difficult track, we're learning more and more to bring back next time.”

A multi-time points champion in Canandaigua, Sheppard has little to learn about circling the hallowed half-miler. He found out on Thursday though in his fourth race of the year at LOLR that he still has a few loose ends to take care of with his C.C. Performance-powered #9S Hurlock Auto&Speed-Westmoreland Golf Glub-St.Lawrence Radiology/Bicknell car.

“Think we were fortunate to hold (Rudolph) off … man, this car wouldn't turn in a 20-acre field tonight,” exclaimed Sheppard, 38, who still repelled second-generation standout Rudolph the second half of the race to score his 79th LOLR Big-Block win. While it was his 14th checkered flag taken in 2020, it was his first in Canandaigua after his new Saturday night hangout of Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown went dark recently due to ever-tightening COVID restrictions.

“It almost cost us the race tonight and definitely cost us last week with Jimmy (Phelps). Not really sure what's going on, just can't get the thing to steer in here. Been kinda strange. Just kept slowing down more and more (to compensate). You don't really want to especially when there's a guy on the outside of you breathing down your neck, but you're still better off slowing down and hitting your marks. We definitely had to earn this one,” Sheppard said.

Mirroring the Sportsman format, the top-three heat race qualifiers re-drew for feature starting positions and Sheppard filed in eighth on the 29-car grid. Pole-sitter Kyle Coffey paced the pack early before division points leader Larry Wight charged high out of turn two to grab another lead in search of a fifth win.

'Lightning Larry' opened up a commanding lead after a half-dozen circuits while 'Super Matt' and Rudolph closed in on the front-five just as hungry for the $4,000 first-place payoff. Sheppard stormed into second on a lap nine restart and when Daniel Johnson Jr., Lance Dusett and Jimmy Zacharias tangled between turns one and two, the Waterloo warrior got another chance to challenge Wight when the caution lights reappeared.

Wight was relentless on the restart, resuming a comfortable advantage as Sheppard and a charging Rudolph remained in contention ahead of last week's winner Phelps and Coffey. A third yellow flag fell on lap 20 when Wight suddenly dropped off the pace to relinquish the lead, a broken axle the reported culprit after the Phoenix NY pilot had battled in traffic seemingly with the race well in hand.

Sheppard inherited the top spot at the halfway point with Rudolph on his bumper followed by Phelps, 16th starting James Sweeting and Tim Fuller, and for the last 15 laps the lead duo kept the final result in doubt. Lap after lap Sheppard clung low while Rudolph searched the high side for an even faster way around. But each time Rudolph built up enough momentum to pull alongside, yellow lights flashed and he had to restart from scratch.

Billy Dunn's Teo Pro car rolled to stop on lap 26 and Russell Morseman did the same in turn two on lap 37. Then with Rudolph on the verge of making a final bid up top, Matt Farnham's car stopped out of turn two moments before the white flag could be thrown. A last ditch drive on the last lap carried Rudolph over the turn two berm, dropping him to fourth behind runner-up Phelps and Wight's teammate Billy Decker while Alan Johnson out-dueled Fuller for fifth under the checkers.

POINT BATTLES AT THE OUTLAW SPEEDWAY HEAT UP AS THE SEASON WINDS DOWN
Story by Kenny Shupp Jr.
(Dundee, NY) With just three weeks remaining in the regular season at the Outlaw Speedway it is still very unclear as to what driver will be the odds on favorite to win the track titles in each of the seven regular classes of competition.
With the abbreviated 2020 race season which began in early June due to stringent New York State Regulations relevant to public gatherings (which are still in effect) the popular yates County Speedway has been able to weather the storm over the past  eleven race nights in trying to salvage some of the season.
“We have been up against it right from the get-go, stated Outlaw Speedway owner, Tyler Sri in a recent interview.  Because of all the regulations surrounding the Covid 19 Pandemic we were handcuffed for the early part of the season.  We lost multiple high-profile events simply because we could not open at all.  Basically, half of our regular season was lost before Cuomo would allow us to at least open the pit gates.  Since then we have been in survival mode.”
With no fans allowed into the grandstand seating areas at virtually all NYS speed plants, Outlaw Speedway has adhered religiously to the hand that has been dealt them.
“My girlfriend, Jordan Lynch and I have played everything by the book  We have not allowed fans into the grandstands and those that choose to enter the pit area are required to wear face coverings and keep social distancing.  We have plexiglass at our pit concession, have kept a limited menu and our staff is required to wear masks and we have hand sanitizer all over the place.  There are other venues that have tried to do end runs around the states protocol, but in most cases, they have been shut down, lost their liquor licenses or have been threatened with fines.  That has not been the case here.  We have not pushed the envelope.” That according to Boss Man, Tyler Siri.
Having weathered the storm thus far by allowing pit admission plus the addition of audio and visual coverage via DirtTrackDigets.TV the track has been able to keep moving forward the best way possible and with that the show continues to roll along with the end almost in sight.
August 28, 2020 is the tentative scheduled end date for the 2020 season points in all the track’s regular divisions.  With the abbreviated season it certainly has kept the point battles close within all the divisions and with just a few weeks remaining more and more focus is now on the division points.
In the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modified Division Super Matt Sheppard has ruled the roost thus far.  Even with a pair of DNF finishes due to mechanical issues, the 2017 and 2019 Outlaw Speedway Track Champion has been able to overcome a pair of uncommon poor finishing positions with seven wins which keep him atop the point standings. However, Super Matt need not look very hard over his shoulder as the Brothers Johnson are well within striking distance and with three point races still left on the schedule there is plenty of time for either second place point getter, Dr. Danny Johnson or 2018 Modified Track Champion, AJ Slideways, Alan Johnson to get up on the wheel and take down the potent 9s machine of Sheppard.  Outside of AJ Slideways who owns two feature wins in 2020, The Hurricane, Steve Paine is the only other driver to visit victory lane thus far and currently sits fifth in points as of August 10.  Second generation pilot, Kyle Coffey has been a threat all season having been a picture of consistency and still has a legitimate shot at the title as he is a solid fourth in points. Mathematically drivers like Brady Fultz, Siri, Cartwright Jr and others all still have a shot, however they are now dependent on the top five having problems over the next few weeks.
Same thing holds true in the Stan’s Not Tubes Street Stock Division as like Sheppard in the Modifieds, Glen Whritenour in the Street’s has been able to use the Outlaw Speedway as his personal sand box in 2020.  The 2017/2018 Track Champion in the Division has been literally unstoppable thus far and with just a few weeks remaining looks poised to pick up his third-class title in the last four seasons.  The track Bounty Money that has been put up for anyone that can take down either Super Matt or GW has continued to roll from week to week as the pair have showed dominance in their respective divisions.  Jake Karlnoski, Quinn Sutherland, CJ Guererri, Aksel Jensen and Jered Hill are all in the top six going into the last three point races, but they will need some help if they have any chance of upending the high flying 15 machine of Glen Whritenour.
The Hoosier Tire Crate Sportsman Division has seen only four different drivers work their way into victory lane this season.  2019 Track Champion Will Shields as three wins this season as does Tommy Collins Jr and Zack Sobotka.  Third generation driver, Alex Payne has one win in a division that finds Sobotka currently atop the point standings with Shields, Collins and Payne all within the top five.  Fourth place point getter, Zach George has quietly gone about his business and still is well within striking distance of a track championship.
In the Sunrise Insulation American Racer Crate Sportsman Division, it has been a season of multiple winners.  2018 Track Champion, Chris Fisher has been nothing short of phenomenal all year, knocking down top five feature finishes almost every week.  Sobotka, Shields, Payne and Ajay Potrzebowski have all made trips to victory lane as well as second generation driver, Billy Paine and veteran shoe, Dale Welty.  Fisher currently leads the points, but if he has the least little hiccup the dogs are ready to pounce including 2017 Class Champion, Karl Comfort.  Fisher, Comfort and Potrzebowski all focus their attention on just American Racer Tires, but Sobotka, Shields, Payne and numerous others do double duty each week racing on both American Racer and Hoosier tire brands.  They get plenty of track time each week, but as the weeks are rapidly coming to a conclusion it will be interesting to see if the guys that just focus on one class can prevail over the drivers that may be stretching themselves out.
Bad Brad Smith has only one feature win thus far in 2020, but he leads the IMCA Modified Point standings with just three weeks to go.  But don’t blink because one time feature winner, Kevin Smith, consistent competitor, Bumps Scutt, 2018 Track Champion and five time 202 feature winner, Rodney Morgan and Old Dick in the Dirt, Rich Karlnoski are all right there and should Bad Brad get into trouble there could be a real shake up at the top.  The car count numbers may not necessarily be the best in recent years, but the competition has been incredible in the Nationally Sanctioned IMCA Modfied Division at Outlaw Speedway.
In the companion IMCA Hobby Stock Class one would think that current high point man, Wayne Ellison was trying to duplicate what Matt Sheppard and Glen Whritenour were trying to accomplish and that is to win every Friday night.   With seven wins to his credit thus far the only other driver to topple the might #18 machine has been the 2017/2018 Hobby Stock Track Champion and three-time feature winner in 2020, Marc Minutolo.  In fact, the only times that Ellison has been toppled by Minutolo has when he has had mechanical problems, his car has been that dominant.  Oddly, enough Bruce Kinner is just a few points behind Ellison as is Jamie Eldredge, Justin Eldredge and Jeremy Trank.  With only three-point races remaining only thirty-eight points separate the top five and its game on down the stretch as its still anybody’s championship.
The Mighty 4 Cylinder Division has been a two-horse race with Bob Doolittle and Jeremy Bunn taking turns visiting victory lane.  Ray Hyer and Scott Lehman Jr. have been the only two others to topple the Doolite/Bunn butt whipping they have put on the rest of the competition.  Jeremy Bunn leads the points by thirty-six over Doolittle with Hyer, Scott Lehman Sr, and son Jr. holding the top five point paying positions.  Even though Bunn is experiencing a career year as is Doolittle, they need be reminded that if they get to wrapped up in each other, Hyer or one of the Lehman’s could snooker the top two in the class.
Last but certainly not the least the Winner’s Circle Deli Youth Bandit Division has run on a weekly basis during the shortened season.  Ethan Decker has been just a picture of consistency in winning most of the events, however, give a call out to the likes of Abbey Decker, Blake Parsons, Jordan Costley and Bradley Morseman who have all seen action in the Bandit Class.  They are currently holding down the top five positions in the points as the season is ending.
