Here's a photo of Greame Bolia at Shangrila circa 1967. This car was later redesigned and reconstructed and eventually became my families first real Modified. Dad, Norm Welty, raced coupes in the late fifities and early sixties at places like Addison Hill, Towanda, Southport, Chemung and Dundee but those were all Flat-Head Ford powered cars. The #331 was the first Big Block Chevy car we ever had. It came with a 396 somewhat over-bored. Dad drove it the first time attempting to qualify for a Five Mile Point Southern Tier 100 although he had been retired from driving for a few years. After that my brother Darrell took over. Although we had to replace the front axle a number of times, (completely depleting the model "A" axles within eight counties of our home), Darrells talent behind the wheel was quite evident as he raced an outdated, under-powered car to a number of good finishes including a third place at Five Mile Point in which he led much of the feature and was passed and repassed Dave Kneisel in his Indian Head coupe. You know what PT Barnum said? There's a sucker born every minute.
This is from 1993 so I guess it qualifies as an oldie. Dale wins at Dundee in the Super stocks
This will take a few posts and is from 1981 through 83. Those of us who have been around for a while really miss the "way it was". The cars were distinctive, they did not all look alike like they do now.
Dale skinned his Bob Mahlzan built modified with a falcon body, I thought it was a very cool looking modified.
It then morphed into the Mini-Market Mustang:
Then had a little problem:
And was resurrected as the "Mini-Market Modified":
And finally reached the end of it's useful life:
