Dick Emery with the #13...any photo I've ever seen of his stuff, the cars always looked immaculate!
And with that we have hit the mile stone.....PAGE 100!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks RaceNY!!!!
The first Waterloo 151 was in October 1969.The race drew 80 cars from all over.Bobby Merz started what turned out to be the first of several flips by flipping in hot laps. The worst flip by far was by Sammy Reakes who cleared the tops of several trees ending up out by the road over by what most consiter the third turn.Sam had a reputation of being so good at the place he was almost never in trouble, but not today.I cant remember how many flipped that day [real big number]but I have never seen or heard of any other racing event that ever came close to the number of cars going over as did that day.The compitition was something else that day,I still can to this day picture Frankie Schneider throwing his car sideways pitching it through the turns trying for the last spot in the consi, only to come up short.
Anybody got any pics of Johnny McArdle in the "Leanin' 11" sedan? The pic of the #13 is Dick Emerson, BTW...not Emery. Not being critical, just wanted to clarify. Great pics...keep 'em coming!
Yes....thanks, Bob! Back in 1964, that was my favorite Limited Sporstman (flathead) at Canandaigua.
What is the roll cage made from....3/4 in conduit?
Back in those days, yes they used conduit...and as long as corrections are being made...Glen Reiners was from Penn Yan, it was GALE McArdell and Sam Carista drove the #30 and is still racing @ Brewerton

My dad was friends with Mike.As a kid i would tag along with my father to mikes shop on the ridge. It was an upstairs/downstairs shop,Mike worked upstairs and Gary Cornelius kept Al Shutts car downstairs. They also shared this neat two car hauler.I think it was an old U Hall truck.Visited Mike a few times in Florida.
Another thing that stood out from that first 151 race at Waterloo for me was seeing the Rutledge Rocket! Full body Covair with the engine beside the driver inside the car! Does anyone have a pic of that car on DIRT?!! My Dad tried to qualify my cousin Jim's yellow #72 Coach but the springs were so stiff all it did was bounce and that made the carb sputter so he didn't make out well. Also that day created a catch phrase within our family. Any time we would be getting ready to go to a race during a beautiful summer day someone would yell, "remember Waterloo!!!". That meant to bring along blankets and heavy coats even if it's 80 degrees out. Because that was the scenario for that first 151. It was really nice out when we left for the races and then it was about 35 degrees that night.....we all froze our petuti's off!!!! Here's a pic of the coach my Dad drove that day.
