If it was the Blue38, it was owned by Ed LaPrade.... But I think Kappy was still in LM's when Chuck was in the 38.
Ciprich did pick up a ride (that I know got torn up, but wasn't there to know the details), with Ray Quinlas in a 43x. This would have been with Kappy in a Mod. I believe that same car was resurrected as a Blue 1x later on.
33 years has clouded the memory cells.
Here's the flip at RWR in '78. In the recap from Rolling Wheels it states this was Chuck's first race back on the DIRT circuit since another crash (it wasn't specific). It also said he was knocked unconscious, but was checked and released from the hospital. I'm not sure what year he drove the #38. I only went to 2 races in '78 and 3 races in '77, but I do remember him driving it. Maybe the bad flip was earlier in '78.
It's really not a big deal. I don't remember if it was NSSN or Gater, but one of them had a 4 or 5 picture sequence of the crash. The car Ciprich was driving was definitely a Pinto if that helps, but don't pull your hair out looking for the pictures on my account.
You guys are making me feel guilty here. I still have every Gater, Stock Car Racing magazine, Open Wheel, Late Model Racer and Dirt Trackin' that I ever bought dating back to 1972, and all are in very good to pristine condition - especially the SCR's. But they are in storage and I can't get at them without a full day of work getting them out and putting them back
I don't mind going threw my programs at all. I just have a gap between '77 and '78. There were a lot of family issues those couple of years. I'm betting it was in '78. I'm jealous that you have gater's. Most of mine are missing or fell apart. I had gater's back to '69. My gater yearbooks are falling apart too.
My divorce began about the end of 2003, which resulted in my moving back to mom and dads for a while. All of my magazines and newspapers are stored in 2 large, light tight wooden crates, and went into the basement at my parents house. I was married almost 24 years and a guy can accumulate a lot of stuff in that time. Since the magazine collection meant a lot to me, it was one of the first things I moved. It also put it at the bottom of my stuff. The video is the most prized thing I own - and that never left my sight.
You're kinda lucky. The first time I moved back in with the parents, I lost a bunch of programs in the move (I still think one of my "friends" swiped them). For years they sat in my parents basement. That ruined most of my gaters. Even the few I have left are fragile. The programs held up ok though. They now reside in my dark closet. I have to go through them once in while, just so I can remember those days. The older I get, the less I remember.
Is this the car you're thinking of? This is '77. Jeff Kappesser is still running Late Models, as he's leading the points at Rolling Wheels in this program. I assume Chuck started the '78 season with this car too, but I don't have any earlier '78 programs (the earliest is #16). Kappesser was a rookie in the mods in '78 (he was actually 3rd in rookie points behind Jerry Knox and Jack Emerson, but 2 positions ahead of Danny Johnson). Man, if that happened in '78, that would be two nasty flips at RWR in a matter of weeks.
Hey this is a real nice board. I've spent the last few nights perrusing it. There's some good stuff here. I think I'll just hang around if nobody minds & take in the reminisence.

Welcome!!!!! There's lots of good stuff here.
That is the car I remember, but after what Jerry said, I am starting to question my memory because I remember the 43x car as well. Hmmmmm....
I believe Chuck drove another self-owned greenish-blue #38 prior to the car in the program picture. I remember he said, that car was the worst handling car he ever drove. I think it may have been a Tobias chassis. I believe my brother Darrell has a pic of it somewhere. I don't remember the wild crash off turn four which is weird as I would have been there for sure if it happened between 77 to 79 and we were quite friendly with Chuck as he comes from our neck of the woods. Here's a pic I shot at Syracuse that I believe to be Chuck in a sprint car although I've never been able to confirm that it's him. I believe he was involved in a first turn crash that flipped an Oswego Super and sent this car airborne but it came back to Earth right side up!
I wouldn't doubt that's Chuck. My Dad always said, if it had four wheels and a motor, Chargin' Charlie would drive it. I can't count how many cars I've seen him in (or maybe I can). I saw him drive URC at Weedsport and Rolling Wheels a few times. The only sprint car race I saw at the Fair was the '74 Salt City 100. I did hear he wrecked his super at the fair one year.
Just for fun, cars I actually remember seeing him drive...
Yellow #38 coupe (his I believe)
Sandman Coach #12
Sandman Coupe #12
Another Sandman #12 (pinto or gremlin)
Davidson #81 Gremlin
Davidson #81 Vega (i think)
His #48 Pinto (I think it said in a program this used to be one of the Sandman cars he bought)
Sincerbeaux 0 Coupe
Sincerbeaux 0 Pinto
The #38 Pinto in the pic on the last page
The Tobin #21 Super
The C-15 Super
Ron Buckners #36 Super
At least one Sprint Car
Of course there were more that I don't actually remember seeing him drive.
Chuck also drove the ex-Tom Forgione #50 Cavalier Modified in 1985.
And don't forget he drove the Hemi Cuda for Ed Close.Chuck is now in Florida for the winter but I do see him from time to time during the summer. He always has a smile and a laugh for you when ever he is around.
I forgot about 2 other asphalt modifieds that Chuck drove:the #40 owned by Al Schutt and the #21 owned by Dale Marion.
