4 jonny podalok 7up carl nagle i think he is 70 or 71 years old raced at penn cann this year. 11t dennies taney
Thanks for the update and story Jay.......It is actually really nice to know that. It was indeed a thrill to race with one of my childhood heroes. It was painful however, to see the Dutchman/Turner Bros. struggle through the '78 season. I feel a little better now knowing that Dutch went out on a competitive note...........kt
If the 5/5/79 Shangri-La Modified main event was indeed Dutch Hoag's last feature, he finished tenth. George Kent in the Smales #41 won over Richie Evans, Dave Nichols, Jerry Cook, Sonney Seamon, Mark Newton, Gail Barber, Brett Bodine, Wayne Edwards and Dutch.
THANK YOU!
Not a problem. I think it's the only one I have with Dennis on the cover.
I am assuming you read my post on DTD about Dennis being one of my favorite Late Model drivers back in the '70s. If not, it's an eerie coincidence because the post was just a couple of days ago.
No, that was coincidence. I haven't been over there in a while. I was huge Late Model fan as a kid. Although I was a Walt Mitchell fan, I really liked Denis. He seemed to come out of nowhere at Weedsport in '74, and was a front runner right from the beginning. He's certainly one who is missed. I'll scan the Profile from that program tomorrow and post it.
I wouldn't mind having it. I was more of a late model fan as a kid than I was a modified fan for one reason... I hated seeing the same driver win every week (still do), and Will Cagle won a ton of races in the '70s. Walt Mitchell won a lot of races too, but not nearly as many as Cagle did. I was also a big Jeff Kappesser fan, and a fan of Jerry Knox. I think the late models from the '70s is why I liked the early days of the Pro Stocks so much.

Cagle won quite a few. I probably saw at least half his 84 wins at the Port. I may have a Kappy program or two laying around. Don't think I have a Jerry Knox. The Late Models were great. Bushy, Bill Roese, Colsten, Updike, Secord, all those guys. I used to beg my Dad to take me to the NYS Late Model Championship every year even though it was in the middle of the week, and he was supposed to be working on the Super. He usually did though. Racing was never the same for me when Weedsport went to Small Blocks in the early 80's.
The Late Models were awesome. Chet Ward, Jim Gabriel, Tony Vecchio, Chuck Watson, Tommy Wilson, Carl Game, Roger Phelps, Jack Emerson, Jerry Ward (Honkin' Padre), Keith Lippincott, Jim Converse, Dick "Crash" Nash, Carl Nagle, Ron Merithew, Dick and Kenny Gamlin, Harley Turner, Roger Bower, Danny Rizzardo, Wally Burnett, Don McGinnis, Mark Elliott, Bill and Ken Updike, Jim Jarvis... I just loved Late Models. There were lots of nights in the early to mid '70s when the Late Models outnumbered the Modifieds. And I was with you all the way. When Glenn introduced the 320 Modified, it dismantled the Late Models almost immediately.
Tony Vickio was a dirt Late Model driver who ventured onto the asphalt at Shangri-La with brief and very limited success in 1979 that included flipping the Dale Marion #21 Modified out of the park, and Tony Vecchio was an asphalt guy.
I didn't know the spelling of his name and guessed. Oops!
