When you said Ike Conley, that got the wheels turning. I'm pretty good friends with Ike's daughter and new son in law. I'm going to send them a PM on facebook to see if she can't persuade her dad to get off some of the old pictures. I'll keep you posted...

That would be great. I used to love the late models. I lost a lot of my old pics. I might have a couple more late model pics. Anything else I have would be from old programs. I still have a lot of them. I used to get Ike Conley mixed up with Tony Vickio because Tony used to be #16, but when he came back Ike was already #16, so Tony changed his number to 17. I think the 15 that kinda looked like Lloyd Holt's paint scheme was Paul Holic (sp). I really don't know how I remember a lot of this stuff when I have a hard time remembering what I did yesterday.
I was a HUGE fan of the late models. In fact, I liked them a little better than the modifieds as a kid, and I really resented the 320 Mods for squashing out the late models. The only problem I ever had with the late models was the bumpers. I remember back in '77 when Waterloo opened. The late models always had trouble in turn 2 because of the width of their cars and they'd lock bumpers and get tangled up in the wooden guardrail quite often. I used to get annoyed from how long it took to cut the cars apart all the time.
Some Late Model action from Brewerton Speedway
My Dad's late model #43x, a 61 Chrysler. Probably my Uncle driving it. If anyone can date these pictures, I would be eternally grateful. My Dad's fuzzy about what year it was. Since I vaguely remember my Dad driving the car at Weedsport once, I'm guessing between 1969-1971.
Through the process of deduction...
The ambulance in the infield is a '69 Cadillac. It's also missing the left front hubcap, leading me to believe that it isn't new. There are no leaves on the trees yet, and everyone in the stands are wearing light jackets meaning it's chilly and probably early May. Scratch 1969.
From the Brewerton website, Doug Zupan is saying that racing was on friday nights, starting at 8:30. This looks like a heat race and a lot earlier than 8:30 to me - especially since it's May and the lights aren't on. Scratch 1970.
New management takes over the speedway in '71, running specials only. The crowd looks like what you might expect for a special afternoon show. I'm going with 1971.
That certainly makes sense. I would've been 5 years old, so I would've had some vague memories. It couldn't have been '72, that's the year he started wrenching for Mike Rizzo. Now to find some old Weedsport/Brewerton programs from '71. Thanks!!!! I'm usually pretty good at dating pictures. If they were Weedsport pics, It would've been much easier.
It also couldn't have been 1972 as that was the year they put a racing surface on it, and covered it with dirt
Excuse me while I duck from all the beer cans that are about to get thrown at me!
Nope, you were right. i should've looked at the Brewerton website. I knew they had a speedway history there. That was the beginning of the end for the paved tracks in upstate ny. Fulton wasn't far behind.
Walt Mitchell loosing an engine, while leading, coming down for the white flag, 1979.
Here are some not so good pics. 1979
John Podolak, Jim Jarvis?, Will Cagle (SCR car). Must be hot laps since I don't remember Cagle actually racing the SCR car.
Alan Johnson, Mike Colsten
Here's a tough one. Mark Livingston, Terry Kincaid, ?, Dale Welty, Will Cagle?, Eddie Rafferty.
To me it looks like Livingston, possibly Darrell Welty in the 711, Andy Romano, then definately Dale Welty, Will Cagle, Ed Rafferty, That car on the outside looks like one of those flat sided central pa gremlins similar to the Mushroom #60 car MeMe Desantis used to drive but he wouldn't be at Weedsport. Isn't revealing that we can look at the cars and nearly identify each driver by the basic shape & color of the car. Take a long fuzzy shot of some modifieds today and you'd have no idea who was who. I think this lack of personality between the cars is one reason racing has lost some of it's popularity....even on the cup scene. Cookie cutter cars and cookie cutter tracks are ruining racing.....I always liked brownies better anyway! Here's another fuzzy pic I took at syracuse in 72....you name them! DALE
I completely agree. 1979 was the last full season we went to races. We went to a few a year until '87, but by the I had definitely lost interest. If the cars didn't have different paint jobs and numbers, there was no way to tell them apart. I think the only coupes left in '79 were Mark Livingston and Steve Podolak.
Let's see if I can guess a couple of them. '72 was a year before the first time I went to a fair race. Harry Peek in the 27? Don Diffendorf's s360. That orange coach on the inside looks familiar, but I'm drawing a blank.

White K46 Valiant is the Schloder owned car, not sure who was driving it at that point; think Kerry was still too young.
1972 SYRACUSE RACE DRIVERS - Mike Grbac #K46 , Don Diffendorf #S360 , Harry Peek #27, Dick Clark #16x [orange coach], Ken Shoemaker #124. Guess on yellow coupe in front- Ken Moore #60x.
