Ah, I was waiting to see "Senna" show up. We had an international student from Brazil living in our area for awhile. His eyes lit up wide when we talked about Ayrton Senna, a true hero in that country. Some rather stark crash footage in the film that graphically showed the danger of Formula One in those years. Great movie list!
My wife and I went to Watkins Glen to watch "Senna" on the big screen...It was a very moving documentary. I went on line and checked into "The Quick and the Dead" and found info on it. It was originally released in 1975 as "One By One" and can be found on Youtube in segments. I just started watching it and was struck by ALL the names that were flashing through the screen that are no longer with us!
Like I had said Wayyyyyyy back when, this was a list of movies dealing with racing. Eluding a red-neck sheriff doesn't quite make it a racing movie, although they do end up at a race, so I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder (LOL). I see that the movie SENNA is on Youtube in it's entirety and I have seen "The All-American Hero" and "Redline" on the inter-web, so It got me to wondering how many of these great flicks are posted somewhere....we'll have to check into that!
When I was little, Hell on Wheels was playing at the old DRYDEN DRIVE-IN. When they were racing everything was fine. When Marty Robbins started singing, every car at the Drive-In including my father started beeping there horns until the next race scene started. I remember that like it happened yesterday.
I didn't see, "On Any Sunday" a documentary concerning Motorcycling and Motorcycle racing. It probably does about the best job ever of capturing the soul of what it's like to be devoted to a racing sport although it deals with two wheels instead of four. I think it must have come out in the early seventies. It is truly top notch with a major part of it following a National Champion Flat Track racer. I HIGHLY recommend it if you can find it.
From 1957 "Teenage Thunder" A classic "B" movie with drag footage from the 50's and some cool old hotrods...also Robert Fuller as the antagonist. He went on to play Dr. Brackett on the T.V. show "Emergency" (The video's owner prevents external embedding)
EAT MY DUST...with Ron Howard. Starts with racing on the track. Then turns into racing on the streets with the cops when Ron Howard steals the guy's racecar. Ron Howard is also the Sherriff's son which makes it fun. I seen it at the Dryden Drive In. I got the DVD on Ebay.
The Speed Kings (1913) w/ Ford Sterling, Mabel Normand, Billy Jacobs, Fatty Arbuckle. Cameos by legendary racecar drivers Barney Oldfield, Teddy Tetzlaff and Earl Cooper. Very early racing footage. The oldest film on the list!!!
