UPPORT DIVISIONS HUGE PART IN BIGGEST EVENT OF YEAR AT MERRITTVILLE – COUNTDOWN TO 17th TREVOR WILKENS MEMORIAL CONTINUES

For Immediate Release July 24, 2009.  From Jim Irvine

Thorold, Ontario (July 24) There’s just 10 days now to Merrittville Speedway’s biggest event of the season Monday August 3rd and like the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Race Teams and the hometown hero L. St. Amand Enterprises 358 Modifieds – the Thorold track’s Hoosier Stocks and Modern Corporation Open Wheel Lites are also getting ready for the big show.

“Week in and week out,” relates (Merrittville GM) Erica Bicknell, “drivers from both of these divisions put on some great racing for the fans … and for the Hoosier Stocks – their event sets the stage for the combined Duel on the Dirt Events later this season.”

The Duel on the Dirt is a unique two track Mini-series involving the Merrittville Speedway Hoosier Stocks and the Brighton Speedway Pro Stocks in home track and combined events.

Launching in 2005 with just a single event at each track it now includes two ‘hometrack’ events prior to the two combined fall events.

While Rob Murray leads the season long points battle, Ken Sargent leads Team Merrittville after the first Home Track Event pack in May. Team Merrittville of course is on a drive for 5 in 2009 against their friends from Brighton – having won individual and team honors for the last four seasons.

The three star holiday racing spectacular also includes the Modern Corporation Open Wheel Lites and most nights the big time racing these small in stature cars put on is worth the price of admission alone.

The Modern Corporation Open Wheel Lites will be featured in a Stars North Mod Lite Tour Event – which was won by Overall Point Champion Shawn Sliter last season. His Modern Corporation Team-mate Jamie Gilbert leads the season long standings but Sliter once again tops the Tour points. Gilbert sits in second with Paul Klager in third. Modified driver Chris Steele is in fourth spot while Rick Brubacher is 5th.

“You wouldn’t think that a motorcycle engine could put so much power to the track,” adds Bicknell, “but with the track conditions as they are some nights – the Open Wheel Lites are just as fast as our Sportsman … August 3rd’s show definitely will have something for everyone.”

Of course the main event will be the 100 lap Super DIRTcar Series Event for the Big Block Modifieds.

It’s been a tradition at Merrittville Speedway since 1972 – make it yours in 2009 and follow the Big Block Super DIRTcar Series to the Thorold d-shaped oval for the 17th annual Trevor Wilkens Memorial 100 presented by Toolneeds.

Toolneeds Inc. is a one-stop source for machine and manufacturing industries to service their tooling requirements for the most demanding applications. Toolneeds Inc. represents the finest lines of industrial tool supplies from world class manufacturers and their inside professional sales representatives possess both trade skills and industry experience.

Toolneeds inc. is the ultimate source for all your tooling and industrial supply needs – call them at 905-684-4744 or visit their location at 227 Bunting Road – Unit L – in St. Catharines.

Commemorating the 17th running of Merrittville Speedway’s biggest event - the days leading up to the event honors the memory of the up and coming driver of the Pete Cosco Haulage 17c 358 Modified – Trevor Wilkens - who passed away far too young from cancer in the summer of 1993.

From the first event in 1972 through to this year’s edition – a who’s who of DIRTcar Modified Racing converge annually on the Canadian showplace to take on Merrittville’s own talented field in the Civic Holiday Classic.

Almost gaining as much in tradition as the race itself is the pre-race Pasta Dinner served up by Merrittville’s Annual Banquet Hosts – Club Castropignano. For race fans and race teams alike – it’s the best deal in DIRTcar Dining.

Feast on fresh pasta and meatballs, garden salad, dinner roll and a can of Pepsi for $10 in advance.

“It just adds to much to the event,” relates (Merrittville GM) Erica Bicknell, “Thorold has a rich Italian Heritage and we’re proud to showcase the Club with an awesome dinner … race fans and race teams alike should come to the event hungry … I know I do … no one goes away hungry.”

Get your tickets at the track … via e mail – ebicknell@cogeco.net or from the Speedway Office at 905-892-8266.

Race Fans and teams alike should get their Pasta Tickets in advance as on Race Day – Tickets are $12.

Merrittville Speedway’s Trevor Wilkens Memorial 100 lap Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series Event Monday August 3rd – it’s unparalleled … unrivalled and unsurpassed and it’s a must see event.

The heart-pounding, high-powered, pedal-mashing entertainment includes a 25 lap Duel on the Dirt Home Track Event as Merrittville’s full fendered Hoosier Stocks continue the drive for five against the Brighton Speedway Pro Stocks and a 25 lap Stars North Mod Lite Tour Event for the Modern Corporation Open Wheel Lites.

Gates open Monday August 3rd and the Club Castropignano Pasta Dinner begins at 4 PM and runs until 6.

Adult Grandstand Tickets are $25, Students and Seniors - $20, Juniors from 8 to 12 are $10 and Children under 8 are free.

Merrittville Speedway is located in Thorold Ontario Canada – just a short drive from the International Bridges. For further information call 905-892-8266 or visit merrittvillespeedway.com.

Racing Discussion / NEW Discussion Categories
« on: July 24, 2009, 04:00:36 PM »
To offer some order (and a "home" for the respective forms of racing) we've created some new sections:

- Poundin' the Pavement section (to discuss New York pavement racing)

- Ridin' the Cushion section (to discuss New York dirt-track racing)

- Tech Barn has been moved under the Racing Discussion. If requested or needed we can make separate tech sections in the Pavement and Dirt sections.

As usual, complaints can be directed toward me!  ;D

We've been toying with this idea for years...let's try it out. This forum will just be for discussing dirt racing....

If the asphalt folk want a separate forum too, we can do that.
