Racing Discussion / 'Finger Lakes Speedworld' update
« on: March 04, 2013, 06:52:55 AM »
Hey everybody...wanted to post an update and a couple of comments on the Fidelis Care 'Finger Lakes Speedworld' March 22nd through the 24th at Fingerlakes Mall in Auburn, NY.
First off, a tip of the hat to Black Rock Speedway for filing the first entry for the show (thanks Dean!)...I have heard from several people who are planning to enter and that's awesome...get your entries in because the deadline is March 15th and that will be here before you know it.
I hope area racers and tracks realize what this event's about and why we're doing it...this show is patterned after the successful 'Southern Tier Speedworld' show at the Oakdale Mall that Robin Oltz and I created. The logic behind it was to showcase area racers and tracks in an environment where they could be exposed to a new auidence of men, women, and children who otherwise might not know a thing about how awesome an area we are in...how many different tracks offer a variety of racing events...and maybe find out that their neighbors and friends are a part of it...all with the ultimate goal being to increase awareness of what we do and draw new spectators (and potential sponsors) into the sport.
Now I have the opportunity to do something similar here in the Finger Lakes region, where we have a TON of racing of all types happening...and a TON of different types of racing represented. This event is a chance for racers and tracks to help themselves...and the reason that it's worked so well in the Southern Tier is because of location: It's not a show where you need to pay admission, it's FREE to everyone to come and see. Guys can bring their wife and kids and while the kids ooh and aah over the cars, Mom and Dad have stuff to do (i.e. shopping) as well. I know that some teams in the Southern Tier have also forged some successful sponsor partnerships as a direct result of their participation in the show, and their existing sponsors love the additional exposure a show like this brings to them...and of course, the mall loves the extra traffic in what's otherwise a slow period for them (post-holidays).
Oh, and I don't think you can argue with the idea of hanging out in a mall that has a Bass Pro Shop either.
The reason I'm posting all of this? Simply because we have space to fill and I honestly expected a bigger rush to participate than what I've seen so far. I'm not discouraged, but I felt that maybe some explaining was in order so that everyone understands just how good something like this can be for the area and what the benefits are...which IMO far outweigh the entry fees that we have to charge to cover our event costs (for things like insurance).
If you have any comments or feedback, feel free to post them in this thread or PM me, and thanks to those who have already signed up! It's going to be a great weekend!
