Spencer (as well as other tracks) can't open, because "Commandant Cuomo" isn't a fan of auto racing......

FWIW, consider this...In today's edition of the Rochester newspaper, there's an extensive article on how 4100 casino workers, in NY State, just received lay-off notices. Think about that, for a moment. Casinos, the venues that just 3-4 years ago, were touted as the saviors of the NY economy, and therefore received a significant amount of state provided funding and tax breaks, are now sitting idle, running up debt and collecting dust....at the taxpayers expense. And you think Andy is in the slightest way, concerned about motorsports facilities???

Welcome to the "new abnormal", folks, and don't forget this at the ballot box, this coming November, if you don't want this to be the way we live out the rest of our lives.

THIS CAN'T BE REPEATED OFTEN ENOUGH.

Many  here in the past complained when politics came up on here. "It's a racing site I don't care about politics".
Well..you see where enough people not caring has gotten us.  Politics sucks..I hate it myself but it can't be ignored.  It has to be acknowleged and it has to be engaged. If not our very way of life and the things we value (like motorsports) are threatend.  heed the works of Leadfoot my friends.

Just did that. Rules seem odd to me. No ballast allowed? No steel bushings in the suspension, but you can have 6" rods. Odd things like that.

( same day as TTOM@ Monadnock unforutately)  :-\

All the dates available this year and they had to make it the same day as Monadnock Tri Track Race.  It's almost like they chose that date to try to keep Hirschman from winning.  If Chemung is opening when is their RoC date?

To be fair, there was already a conflict with Chemung ROC vs Monadnock Tri Track when the schedules were released before the Covid hit us.

It does suck that both series are running the same day, but in all seriousness how many drivers consistently support both series? Andy j n Hirschman are the only two I can think of

Presser from Fonda Speedway

FONDA, NY – As stated earlier in the week, Fonda Speedway management will be making adjustments to the remainder of the 2020 schedule per regulations in place by New York State not allowing spectators of any kind in both the Grandstand and Drive-In areas.

Don't know how Ray is going to pull off this show.

 As we all know, there is still a lot of Covid Deaths going on in OUR COUNTRY & the rest of the world. Strong "Recommendations" in regards to "physical" distancing for the remainder of this YEAR and how we move forward as RESPONSIBLE human beings, im sorry to say, might STILL reflect decisions to have gatherings at a race track.
  IMO somehow it just doesn't seem right to "Unnecessarily" gather; especially with no cure for the Corona-virus yet. NYS looks good right now, but the rest of OUR Country is still spreading this virus like Crazy. I Love Racing, but The "Human Race" have not won this race against the Covid-19 yet; WE have not stopped the spread yet; and the SCIENCE Models are "RIGHT NOW" trending towards the USA getting even worse.
 Racers & Fans, We have to HELP STOP the Spread and Think about the Big Picture for now!

"countrydave", there is more than a single viewpoint, when discussing the "big picture". Let me offer a few..........

A) the financial survival of the racetracks, meaning their promoters and staff members. Think along the lines of restaurants, travel agencies and the "corner grocery store", too. They are all "small businesses" that don't necessarily have deep enough pockets to survive, without their usual income stream;

B) the racers themselves. Some actually support themselves with their winnings. No winnings, no income;

C) the parts and tire suppliers. They depend on being able to sell their goods and services, to generate income. AND I'm pretty sure that many of these businesses spent money to bring in inventory for the 2020 season. That inventory has been paid for, and is now sitting;

D) the logistics of most race tracks. Obviously, they are outdoor venues, with plenty of air circulation. Furthermore, most tracks, these days, don't "pack them in" like they used to, in the 60s and 70s. I went to the 3 ROC modified shows at Spencer, last year, and although a majority of the fans were seated between the start line and turn 1, if necessary, people could have EASILY spread out much further, and maintained some distance between each other, and still there would have been some room in the stands;

E) the overhead, even without operating. Race tracks in NY, at best, could get in 10-12 shows. But the track sits there 52 weeks, accruing taxes, etc. Same with the other businesses I mentioned, as they have rent and utilities, etc.

If this crap continues much longer, too many businesses will simply run out of money, and NEVER re-open. Which means hundreds of thousands more people will become unemployed, unable to support themselves.

THEN WHAT?????

Oh and buy the way, just in case anyone throws this into the equation - the flu killed 34,200 Americans last year with a vaccine.........Covid-19 is projected to hit 500,000 dead if we dont stop it, with no vaccine.

1. Nobody is required to go to the race track...or any other place where there are people. Don't feel safe, stay home.

2. Rules have been established for safety. Don't like them, stay home.

Map from CDC website showing the most recent transmission rates: first is 2019-20.

Second map was same time frame 2008-09.

Again, exercising my freedom of choice allowed me by NY state, I'll be there.

I just don't understand some of these crazy rules this has got to be the smartest virus known to man kind with the rules they have put in place to stop it.  In the very beginning the only mask cleared for use was the n95 that are supposed to block small particles and once compromised with saliva and moisture after a few hours become compromised.  These mask are not highly recommended for reuse.  You rarely even see this type of mask in public. Then you have the surgical mask you commonly see are designed to only block large particles and these mask are meant for 1 time use.  Then you have the "sock" idk about everyone else but most of my socks and scarves if lightly pulled on you can see skin underneath!? What are we protecting here. I know I can't get enough masks to replace mine and my families everything i go out and i hardly doubt many others are either.  There has been study sneezes can go up to 13 feet yet 6 feet is fine.  There has been studies covid can spread from flushing toilets with airborne particles i bet most people don't keep mask on in the john.  My kids don't need mask at a restaurant but they do in school?  You social distance in the airport but last time I was on a plane in May your crammed right together just makes me scratch my head. I feel bad for the families who have lost someone to this..but because not everything nationwide was not shut down or COULDN'T  be in the beginning all we did was slow it and its gonna continue to spread and they said that in the beginning it will continue I am not gonna loose my quality of life for a year or two until the next pop up bird flu swine flu excedra its bad enough my kids generation is going to grow up thinking we should handle every pandemic/flu like this 6 feet apart, wear mask, stay home, skip school, collect big unemployment and i fear for the new America that will emerge out of this. How is it they can control crowds at races to protect health  of others and take away that freedom but you can riot and protest and thats ok what about people spreading the covid and becoming a health risk there, OH wait i forgot they are expressing themselves and thats ok if people die from that why didn't they get shut down?  Better yet we worry about the lives lost from this sickness but what is abortion totals sorry for the long talk actually I'm not!

This virus is bad stuff...especially for people who have compromised cardiovascular systems. That being said, if you know you are at risk, or will be around someone who is at risk, take precautions. Most healthy people recover from it like any other flu.  The "standard" varieties of flu will kill a few health people every year. They've come a long way in treatment for the sickest people including rarely using intubators now.  It doesn't spread any different than other flu viruses (contrary to many early news reports).  It is going to be interesting what the country will do every time there is a flu outbreak in an area. That is why I posted what happened in 2008-09. Lots of very sick people but we didn't close the country. Go to the CDC site to look at past outbreaks.

Don’t get me wrong, taking precautions is a good thing, my point is this. If I can out to eat with a mask, and once I sit down at a table take that mask off. Then race fans should be allowed to sit in the stands with a mask if that’s what they are ok with. No harm done if you ask me. Open the tracks n go racing.

"BOZO", it's not infighting, it's discussion. Unfortunately, the "supposed experts" can't seem to come to a unanimous conclusion, which most certainly leaves the general public hanging in the breeze. Furthermore, it's not just for the good of the sport, that the situation gets resolved, it's for the good of the United States, as well as the rest of the world....

Were the state police called to investigate the generator fiasco last night?   Chemung Speedrome employees stated it was shut off intentionally.   So was it shut off twice intentionally?   Was someone guarding it the 2nd time it was shut off?   Can anyone tell me what the curfew stipulations are at Chemung?   I thought they were allowed to go over curfew a couple times a year which should not be a problem given this was the first race.

WAY back when, that happened a couple of times at Spencer's, but it was most definitely accidental. That old generator that they had, set up in the old Dodge milk truck, in the center of the infield, would get a little "cranky" at times....

“Defending Track Champ Zack Curren Hold Off Tony Hanbury in Chemung’s B Mod Lid Lifter” (NY)

Chemung Speedrome’s season opener, Friday, July 24th though two months late, was everything a track would hope for – a great turnout of race teams and fans, competitive racing, and beautiful weather. This kicked off the second year under the promotional team of Ray and Ellen Hodge. Everyone was greeted by signs regarding the use of masks, frequent hand washing and remaining socially distant from each other. Winners parking alone in the Midstate Basement Authorities Victory Lane included Zack Curren (Insinger Sunoco B Modifieds), Nick Robinson (New York Super Stocks), DJ Shaw (4 Cylinders), Mark Taylor (Marion Decker Hobby Stocks), along with Chase Sinsabaugh (Bandit) and Kalysha DeMark (Coaches Pizza INEX Bandoleros). Racing this upcoming week will be on Saturday, August 1st at 5:00 p.m.

Defending track champion, Zack Curren, earned a sweep on opening night by winning both his heat race and the 30-lap Insinger Sunoco B Modified feature. Luck of the draw put Tony Hanbury on the pole, with Curren alongside for the start. Curren’s spot-on start on the high side propelled him to the lead. The first of four cautions came when Travis Spalding spun with nine laps complete. This time the front row was in reverse order, but the outcome remained the same. Curren led over Hanbury, Charlie Sharpsteen, heat winner Gene Sharpsteen and Scott Wylie. When the race resumed Wylie moved forward but then dropped out with a mechanical problem. Andy Lewis’ spin, followed by one by Lee Sharpsteen, slowed the action for a bit and brough Daryl Lewis, Jr. up to fourth with TJ Potrzebowski fifth. The last caution came when Dave Kozlowski spun and that set up the last chance for anyone to top Curren. No one could on this night, and he celebrated his win over Hanbury, C. Sharpsteen, G. Sharpsteen and Potrzebowski. A valve spring problem resulted in a DQ for D. Lewis, who had finished 3rd.

The New York Super Stocks proved eager to race with 35 cars signed in. The 26-car field was determined by five heats, won by jimmy Steffenhagen, Andy Cryan, Tim Gullo, Cameron Nichols and Garrett Zacharias, along with a B-main won by Mike Hyman. Jacob Gustafson led early, leaving some great side-by-side racing behind him. The field ran 21 laps before the first caution came out. The restart had Nick Robinson and Tim Gullo within striking distance. Neither of them, nor a hard-charging Steffenhagen had to strike in this one, as Gustafson spun in front of the field in turn two, collecting Zacharias. During the clean-up the track’s generator, which runs the Musco lighting system around the track, had two malfunctions. Already well over curfew, officials had no choice but to end the race with lap 23 on the scoreboard. The win went to Robinson, with Steffenhagen, Gullo, Cryan and Dylan Bancroft finishing in the top five.

Rumor had it that the 4 Cylinder division would be strong and competitive this year. That’s one rumor which proved to be fact with 19 cars on hand. Monica Green, Ryan Hurlbut and Dante Mancuso won the three heats to set the field for the scheduled 20-lap feature. This was one night, however, when the yellow flag flew so often that the race was eventually put on a 10-minute time limit. When they reached the 10th minute on lap 12 they were given the two-to-go indication and this one ended on lap 16. Rookie Ryan Hurlbut drew the pole and led early with DJ Shaw close behind him. Shaw took the lead on lap five and the pair restarted beside each other each time the caution slowed the field. With spins and cars stopped on the track to bring out cautions, this one was one not to be repeated except for the battle for the win. Shaw held on and got that win over Hurlbut, with Ricky Lane, Nick Galusha and Mancuso rounding out the top five.

The inaugural appearance of the Marion Decker Insurance Hobby Stocks drew three cars and the broom went to Mark Taylor for his sweep of both the heat race and 10-lap feature. Displaying great parity between them, he and Chuck Nichols stayed within two car lengths of each other for the duration. The only caution came when car #17 leaked fluid on the track. Taylor led all 10 laps for his first feature win.

The Coaches Pizza INEX Bandoleros ran a 10-lap feature only, led early by newcomer Kalysha DeMark. The only caution, for contact involving Derrick Vogler and Chase Sinsabaugh, ended Vogler’s night when his front bumper came off and couldn’t be reattached per INEX rules. DeMark resumed in the top spot until Sinsabaugh found momentum on the high side to take the lead. The defending Bandit champion held for the overall win, followed by DeMark with the Outlaw win. Devin Gullo finished 3rd, Vogler 4th.

Chemung moves to Saturday, August 1st for a big money Insinger Sunoco B Modified show in memory of the late Gary Marshall. In addition to that 75-lap feature fans can watch the Insinger Sunoco Super Stocks, 4 Cylinders, Marion Decker Hobby Stocks and Coaches Pizza Bandoleros. Pits open at 2;00 p.m this Saturday, with practice and grandstand gates at 4:00 p.m and racing starting at 5;00 p.m.

Of Note
The 26-car field of Super Stocks paid tribute to our country with American flags attached to their cars on some parade laps. Fans in attendance stood in tribute to the meaningful gesture.

A lucky fan from Elmira, NY won the $1,003 50/50, the largest payout in recent memory. An anonymous donor had put up $500 to guarantee the winner at least that much!

Zack Curren and DJ Shaw won the ‘Winner Winner Chicken Dinner’ of free wings at the Horseheads Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant.

It was justice, of sorts, for 4 Cylinder winner DJ Shaw. Last year the almost certain champion stepped away from racing, with a comfortable lead in the points, to focus on high school football. That earned him the track’s Hard Luck Award in 2019.

ROC legal valve springs are not legal at Chemung?  Now that's intelligent.

They're regulating valve springs?? What is this, NASCAR Monster Cup racing?

If it was a crate engine, yes, they could DQ him for valve springs. They are one of the first things "replaced" in those engines.

At the risk of sounding naive, is the valve spring rule designed to keep the engines below a certain RPM range?

Was not a crate motor....Not sure why they would have a valve spring rule that is different than every other track that runs sport mods....

My understanding is the car had an aftermarket approved spec head that had very specific dimension springs that could be used with that head option. It was not a crate option.

The news that none of us want to hear, but here it is. Racing at the Speedrome will be on hold until further notice. The support shown by the race fans in this state is amazing. Friday night was the proof of that as we had the best night of racing and fans that I have seen at Chemung in many years. That being said, it also generated a lot of very negative comments and pictures that have made their way to people that are not impressed with what we did. I do want to say that the people of the Town of Chemung are not the problem here. The town has been very supportive of our efforts and I thank them all for that.  I cannot get into a lot of detail about our decision but I can assure you that looking at the big picture, this is the right thing to do. Like I said in my last post, we will take this day by day and week by week, things change daily and we will not give up. We will race again this season and you can believe 2021 will be one for the record books. With our season on hold again, I cannot thank the fans and competitors enough for your support. Also have to thank all of our sponsors for the continued support. This Saturdays Gary Marshall Memorial race will be run in 2020, The response to this race has been great with the purse still growing. This will be a 75 lap B-Mod race and will be run the week we can open.  Thank you all so much, we will be back stronger than ever.
