One of the best modified races I've ever seen. Jimmy Zacharias was the show the first half of the race, coming from 18th to the lead. Toward the very end of the 125 lapper, I was so busy watching the battle up front between Zacharias and Daren Scherer that didn't even notice Matt Hirschman catch them. Three wide pass for the lead with a handful of laps to go. It was a classic.

Oswego has always had a certain aura about it.  For years and years, it seemed like those running the place had no interest in adding any economy classes.  Having a weekly show consisting of 40-50 of the wildest supermodified machines on the planet was always enough.

Supermodifieds were the only weekly class at Oswego for 30 seasons (’62-’91). They weren’t always out of reach.  And once upon a time, they were just as popular, if not more popular, in certain parts of the country than sprint cars or modifieds.  You could find them racing coast to coast.  There were career supermodified drivers that raced them for a living.

In ‘92 Oswego added the Small Block Supermodifieds (then called Limited Supermodifieds).  Some of the supermodified faithful stuck up their noses at the cars when they were first introduced.  The IMCA stock car frame and motor claim made them affordable.  There’s no denying they’ve been a success and have probably helped keep the place going.

Oswego did add a third class of super stocks/street stocks in the late 90s when the economy went soft and fields in the super classes started to drop.  I remember the class only lasting a few years.

•Quincy Raceway, Quincy IL (Race Time: 6PM) – Big 10 Super Late Model Series (dirt)
•Slinger Super Speedway, Slinger WI (Race Time: 2PM) – Stock Cars (pavement)
•Mount Lawn Speedway, New Castle IN (Race Time: 5PM) – Stock Cars (pavement)
•Spitzer Motor Speedway, Mansfield OH (Race Time: 1PM) – Stock Cars/MSA Supermodifieds (pavement). This one is iffy.  The promoter has been mysteriously cancelling races recently and their website is now shut down.  So consumer beware.
•Millstream Speedway, Findlay OH (Hot Laps: 5:30PM ) – Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series Non-Wing (dirt)

AJ Foyt finished 25th in the 1960 Indy 500.  His first Indy 500 victory didn't come until '61.

The Indy 500 counting toward the F1 World Championship ended with the 1960 race.  That winner of the 1960 Indy 500 was Jim Rathmann.  Now, Jim's older brother Dick had 13 NASCAR WC wins between 1951-55.  In an odd bit of trivia Jim Rathmann's real name was Dick and Dick Rathmann's real name was Jim.  The brothers switched names in 1946 in an effort to get the underage Jim behind the wheel of a race car. It was supposed to be a temporary, one race deal but they wound up using each other's names for the rest of their lives.  Could be a roundabout way to being the "fourth man" to win in all three disciplines? But they were really two different men.  Jim won Indy/F1.  Dick won in NASCAR.

lynchmob’s photo above of Dutch with the Turner Bros Pinto @ Shangri-la is from 1978.  The photo below is one of Dutch’s last times behind the wheel – a heat race victory driving Dean’s car at Shangri-la in 1979.  Dutch raced a handful of times in the spring of ’79 before retiring for good.

This is a terrible, terrible shock.  Our family has been friends with Eddie and the Doebler family forever.  His quick wit and wonderful sense of humor is what I’ll remember most about him.  Heartfelt prayers go out to Pat and the kids.  RIP Leadfoot.

In 1975, they had   Vegas.  Dean had no. 77 and Dutch showed up with another one with a ?  on the door.  I remember they had twin features at Shangri-La as the qualifier for the RoC at Trenton.  Dutch finished second in one feature; I don't recall his other finish, but he was the overall best finisher and was the preferred starter for Trenton.  I can remember him giving Joe Gerber a big hug in victory lane.
8/9/75: Richie Evans won the first main.  George Kent won the second.  Dutch got the spot for Trenton.
The following week Richie would win his 11th feature of the year at Shangri-la and break Dutch Hoag's record for most wins in a single season at the track.

Anybody know anything about the Gremlin Dutch and Dean ran?  Seems like it was short lived.  Wonder why?
Funny you should mention that Gremlin.  I thought I had a pic somewhere of either Dean or Dutch driving it at Syracuse.  I can’t find it now.  Must have been ’73.  I think it was the Fair race.  If it was Dutch driving that may have been the last time he raced on dirt.  The Gremlin was around for only a couple of season - '73 and '74.  Then Dean debuted a new car in '75.  I want to say the new car was built by Emanuel Zervakis maybe? Those Southern built cars were starting to become the hot-set up back then.

I’ve got to say that info isn’t right.  As I was thumbing through some old Gaters a while back I vaguely remember reading about Dutch competing at Weedsport a time or two on Sunday nights but that would have been in the early 70’s. Maybe 72 or 73?.  After a bit of a retirement in the early 70's, Dutch came back to Shangri-la in '75 racing a modified for a few shows, then in '76 came a brief stint at Oswego in the Turner Bros. supermodified, then, as Mark said, he came back driving the Turner #18 Pinto at Shangri-la and Spencer in '78.

The final races I can remember Dutch competing in where in his son Dean’s Pinto at Shangri-la.  That was 1979.  Dutch’s final win while driving Dean’s car (a heat race) is down below.

You wouldn't know what track this is?
It's Ransomville.  I remember this photo being part of a large collection for sale on eBay years ago.  It's from a Schaefer Qualifier there - 1975?

For those interested in a list of sprint car winners at the Erie Co. Fairgrounds, here is what I have compiled from the sixties and seventies decades.  List is probably not 100% complete, but it's a good start.  I also believe there were a few ARDC midget shows held in the 80's and maybe even the 90's as well.  As for the years '71-'73: Twin features were presented on those race dates.  Jan Opperman won both features in one day in '72.

Billy Blum upside down on front straight with fire everywhere - Dutch and Gary Reddick pulled him out
From the story I heard, it wasn’t just the fire that almost killed him.  Blum nearly choked to death.  When he hit the wall he swallowed his dentures.  When Hoag got Blum out of the car, he reached into his mouth and pulled them out.

The day the Fulton photo down below was taken is etched in my family’s lore…

It was 1978.  I was 12 years old.  My brother was 9.  It's was the 70's.  The economy was bad.  We didn’t have much spending money, so you did what you had to in order to save a buck.  Fulton’s admission was “children under 6 free”.  Before we got to the ticket window, my mother instructed my brother “today you’re 6 years old.”  Victoria Benway, Bub’s wife, was working the ticket window.  When my mom told her my brother was 6, my brother yelled, “Mom it’s not nice to lie.”  Mrs. Benway just laughed and said, “Son, I’m going to let you in for free because you told the truth.  Your mother, however, owes me 5 bucks”.
