KING IS ‘CROWNED’ SST MODIFIED FEATURE WINNER AT WYOMING COUNTY ON PIRATE NIGHT

PERRY, NY…Don King stood tall over a stellar field of competitors to win Friday night’s 30-lap SST Modified feature at Wyoming County International Speedway (WCIS) in only his second start of the 2013 season at the 1/3 mile “Bullring”.

Cam Ayers took the lead when the SST Modified main event got underway until Steve Fuchs was able to get by a couple of laps in.  As Don King moved up from his 8th starting spot into the top 5, the race went yellow on lap 10 when Dan Hoag spun in turn four.  It took a couple of restarts to get rolling again, but Fuchs held the lead while King moved into the top three.

A multi car tangle on lap 12 knocked Toad Bradshaw and Hoag out of the event and sent Ed Schueler and Kevin Lewis to the rear after their involvement in the four-way crash in turn two.  When the race resumed, Ayers had rear end trouble and dropped out, leaving King behind race leader Fuchs for a restart.  Fuchs held him off till a lap 20 restart, when King slipped past to take over the lead, while Lewis was working his way back through the pack.

King was able to hold on through several late race restarts to claim the win, while Fuchs spent the final few laps holding off Lewis, who came back for third at the finish.  Bro Bradshaw scored his first top five of the season, taking fourth place, while Tim Hoegel came away fifth in his first start of the season.

SST Modified heats were won by King and by Ayers.  It was the 13-year old Ayers’ first checkered flag in  a full size race car.

The 25-lap Super Stock contest began with Cassie Logsdon holding the lead for the first lap, while Austyn Fugle made a fantastic move to leap into second place.  Fugle grabbed the lead one lap later and pulled away, while Allen Bookmiller was able to get into second, with Ron Greek and Daniel Majchrzak right behind him.  Fugle spun out of the lead on lap 9 as Majchrzak got past Greek for second.

When action resumed, Fugle jumped into the top groove and started working his way forward, but his luck ran out when he and Mike Chenaille tangled in turn two, sending both cars into the wall and knocking both drivers out of the event.  Majchrzak and Bookmiller fought hard for the lead right to the finish, but Bookmiller would not be denied as he took his second feature win of the season.  Greek was third while Logsdon charged back to fourth after falling back in the middle stages of the race.  Anthony Kelly rounded out the top five.

Super Stock heats were won by Greek and Bookmiller.

The 20-lap 4 Cylinder feature was led by Christine Hanel in the early going until Kevin Grom slipped past to assume the point.  Hanel had her night come to a smoky end a few laps later when she lost and engine, which left Grom out front.  He took off on a restart at the halfway point and pulled away, but multi time feature winner Eric Hastreiter kept up the pressure and took the lead with five laps to go to claim another victory.  Val Stephens was able to hold off Andrea Lamanna for the third spot, with Dakota Packman rounding out the top five.

Hastreiter also captured the 4 Cylinder heat race.

The finale of “Pirate Night” was the Pirate Trailer Race, which turned the 1/3 mile paved oval into a giant debris field after 10 laps of motorized mayhem.  Kevin Grom had just enough of his trailer left attached to his car to take the victory in a contest that featured lots of thrills, spills, and scattered boats, barrels, furniture, and other items all around the track.

Coming up Friday night, July 19th, it’s ‘Farm Days’ at WCIS presented by Reisdorf Brothers and Lamb & Webster.  The night will feature hay rides and Mid-Season Championship double point races for the SST Modifieds, Super Stocks, and 4 Cylinders will all be in action as well.  Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m.  WCIS is at 35 Adrian Road in Perry, NY.  For more information, please visit the track web site at www.wyomingcountyinternationalspeedway.com or visit the new Wyoming County International Speedway Facebook page.
