News Flash: "I think NASCAR is going in the right direction with the changes." - Goggles Pissano

Hmmm.  Should seem pretty obvious to even the casual observer that Mr. Pissano's Racing New York identity has been hacked.

Folks, you don't need to be a rocket surgeon to figure this one out.

Not getting sucked down this rabbit hole. . .

Very Truly Yours,

First point:  Thankful to hear that Ryan survived this crash.  Very thankful.

Second point:  It should be fairly obvious that this type of racing - blocking and bumping - is now part of the sport to make it spectacular and appeal to a wider audience.  It financially benefits everyone.  Call it entertainment if you will.

NA$CAR, the drivers, car owners, sponsors and fans are all willing participants in this form of competition.  While drivers may give a negative sound bite when they're on the wrong end of a push or block, they all embrace it when it benefits them. They haven't come forward with a unified voice and said, "We're not going to do this."

It's hard for me to understand that winning a race by blocking is called racing.  Think I'll go hang out at the Mall by myself and think about it...

Respectfully submitted,

Racing Discussion / Bumpin' and Blocking Made Me a Fan Again...
« on: February 15, 2020, 05:59:42 PM »

Belated Happy Valentine's Day to all.

I just finished watching some good hard racin' in the 'Finity Series and I'm back as a fan of NA$CAR.  Top level racin' is crashin' and I'm a fan.

Like many other Race New Yorkers, I haven't watched much Cup racing, focusing instead on other sports like water polo, Australian rules football and beach volleyball.  (I also have enjoyed hanging out at the Mall and doing macaroni art.)

Along with the Clash and Duels, the bump drafting and blocking have produced some of the most exciting racin' I have seen.  The team racing concept with Ford, Toyota and Chevrolet provides another great element.

Looking forward to the 500 tomorrow when the top professionals get the chance to show their blocking skills in the Great American Race.

Won't even venture a guess at a winner...

(Let me say in advance that I agree with any comments made on this thread.)

Respectfully Submitted,

J. Langford Ratzso

Citing increased costs to present the Modifieds at Thompson Speedway, the owners have proposed a limited schedule and approximate 75% reduction in purses in 2020.  Not a typo.  Approximate 75% reduction from previous year, 2019.

While this may not be the final plan, it has caused a great deal of angst amongst the drivers and race fans.

Here is the link, read it for yourself:  https://racedayct.com/2019/12/competitors-react-to-news-of-thompson-speedway-changes-for-2020-season/

It appears the business model for presenting "full blown" asphalt Modifieds on the short tracks is in a dark hour for car owners, drivers, fans and track owners.

Respectfully Submitted to the denizens of Racing New York,

J. Langford Ratzsonelli

Just saw your post, Bob.  Merry Christmas!

Been busy watching the Holiday Baking Championships marathon on the Food Network, eating my Christmas Porridge and having anxiety over how many of our asphalt short tracks will be open in 2020.

As my daddy, J. Langford Sr., used to say, "Tings, dey' no looka' so good."

Hope your New Year is filled with lots of Cheezy Fries and salt taters!

Sincerely,

J. Langford Ratzsonovich

Racing Discussion / Re: Good Job Paz
« on: September 11, 2019, 05:15:51 PM »
I was at The Glen on Sunday for the vintage races.  I think that was the golden voice of Paz on the mic.  Correct?  Sounded great!

Thanks for the kind words, GP! Another great (though V-E-R-Y long weekend)...45 races in 3 days!

Ratzso:  Thanks for the backhanded complement!  (to believe that someone else would actually go through the time and trouble to hack another individual's account to heap some praise) is highly appreciated! Thus, it is YOUR account that may have been severely compromised...

Paz, I am shocked and chagrined!  I have always been a fan of yours.  Pissano, not so much.  If you had a fan club, I would sign up in a heartbeat.

When I saw that Pissano was sending out a compliment, I was immediately suspicious that his RaceNY account was compromised.  I'm still suspicious.

Keep up the good work.

Your Friend,

J. Langford Ratzso

Mr. Pissano, I think someone hijacked your account!

Better check it out...

Modified asphalt racing, drivers and the fans are the winners thanks to Jeff DeMink and the team that put the hard work into rescuing Spencer Speedway from the brink of closure.

That's all I got...

With the elevated outdoor temperatures, my physician, Dr. P. Ness recommended I take a break today from my training for the upcoming Olympics.

Like most others, I don't normally watch NA$CAR but I tried watching a championship cake baking show and with the heat index up around 100 degrees outside, I immediately started sweating watching the cake coming out of the oven.

So, I switched channels and started watching the stars of France Cup racing practice wrecking for the race tomorrow at New Hampshire International Speedway.  Apparently, after wrecking his primary car (due to mechanical failure) Alex Bowman just successfully completed wrecking his back up car and the Hendrick team is standing in a circle doing the deep crap cha-cha trying to decide what to do next.

Meanwhile, back in the broadcast booth, one of the commentators pointed the fickle-finger-of-fate towards the PB & J traction compound that has been applied to the racing surface.  It reminded me of this thread from back in the old days.

I'm a fan of organic asphalt race tracks with no additives or artificial ingredients.  Thought I'd check in the brain trust on Racing New York and see how Mr. Pissano and others feel about adding this snake oil to "improve" the competition?

Your opinion matters.

That's all I got...

Thank You and Very Truly Yours,

J. Langford Ratzso

Racing Discussion / Brad Keselowski and Billy Byron....
« on: July 05, 2019, 02:16:28 PM »
I Just caught the video of Brad Keselowski and Billy Byron during the final practice at Daytona for the upcoming race on Saturday.  If you haven't seen it, Brad (the blockee) had a run and Billy (the blocker) decided to practice his blocking technique.  Brad failed (intentionally) to reduce his right foot pressure on the accelerator pedal. I would say in general terms that Billy's block was unsuccessful. You can look at the video and judge for yourself.

Brad was unapologetic and suggested that blocking should be left on the football field where it belongs. I made this part up, but the message was clear - don't block me.

All of this reminded me of a race at Shangri La Speedway when I working in the pits back in about 1972 when a competitor by the name of Mr. Richie Evans came over to the pit of a fellow competitor after a heat race and had a brief but friendly discussion with driver about the potential negative impacts of blocking aforementioned Mr. Evans.  A polite social visit but the message was clear - don't block me.

Through what I believe is sheer coincidence, the driver Mr. Evans spoke to after the heat race incurred an unfortunate spin and trip off the track during the feature event.

Which brings me to my question to the denizens of Racing New York:  "Blocking?  A legitimate part of the sport of automobile racing or a good way to get punted?"

That's all I got.  Don't block me....

Very Truly Yours,

J. Langford Ratzso

Racing Discussion / Re: Who Has Had A Worse Career?
« on: May 28, 2019, 03:11:59 PM »
Mr. Pissano,

Good to hear from you.  Great question.   Here is what I found.

Danica Patrick's net worth is estimated to be $60 million, as of 2019.

Marco Andretti is an American race car driver who currently has an estimated net worth of $20 million dollars.

No contest, the numbers tell the story, Marco has had a worser career.  So far.

That's all I got.

Racing Discussion / Re: Bristol Crowd
« on: April 11, 2019, 02:39:05 PM »
Well... I for one am flummoxed.

More empty seats at Bristol than fans.  Now I find out that while Darrel Waltrip was boggitying and waving the green flag for the start, the seating section named in honor was closed for the race because of the lack of fans.  That just ain't right, if only for the handful of DW fans out there.

Everyone says they don't watch NA$CAR anymore but there is more chatter about why they don't watch NA$CAR than there was when everyone was watching.  I suspect some fibbing going on here.

All of the pundits talk about the decline and the metrics that confirm this decline, yet on April 4, 2019, International Speedway Corporation (ISCA - NA$CAR) announced that the first quarter results for 2019 showed revenue of $150.9 million which was an increase over the same period in 2018.

ISCA Stock price today is $43.44.  Kodak is $2.86.  ISC today, April 11, 2019 announced a dividend increase to shareholders which is 4.3% larger than the dividend paid in 2018.  Kodak dividend - make a closed fist, open it and see what you have.

Empty seats, no one watching on TV yet NA$CAR continues to make a profit.  This has to be the most amazing business model ever.   I'm flummoxed.....

Respectfully,

J. Langford Ratzsonelli

Racing Discussion / Re: 2020 NASCAR SCHEDULE -- WOW
« on: March 27, 2019, 02:26:45 PM »
After watching Keselowski lead 446 of 500 laps this past Sunday at Martinsville, I have come to the conclusion that NA$CAR can change the schedule all they want, Dancing with the Stars is probably going to be more exciting to watch.

I'll be interested to see what Pissano has to say about the changes as he now has a direct connection to the France family since his visit to Daytona this past February.

Sincerely,

J. Langford Ratzanovich

Based on the current car configuration, the track and no caution flags in yesterday's race contest, (except for the stages) I'm surprised that the finishing order wasn't about the same as the starting line up.

I guess in Ryan's case it pretty much was.

That's all I got.....
