Looking Back at a now Closed Track
« on: June 21, 2019, 01:22:03 AM »
Earlier today I became curious and I drove past the location of the former Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park on the Howard Farm in Homets Ferry, the suburbs of Wyalusing, PA.

When I looked out at what used to be in that now grown up field it brought a tear to my eye. That small track was where a lot of families, friends and competitors gathered.

I wanted to take the chance to send a special Thank You to Billy Maynard and his entire family for giving everyone an amazing place to race from 2006-2012. There dedication to our sport has been truly amazing and they all deserve to be given a round of applause.

While I know the circumstances of the closing was out of the hands of the Howard and Maynard Familes, I still always wish that track never would have closed because now if people in that area wish to race karts, slingshots or microsprints they have to travel a great distance to compete.

It is like the old saying goes. You really don't know what you have until its gone. The saying is so very true because when WVMP closed, the community truly lost something amazing.

I drove by the old Shangri-La/Tioga on memorial day on my way to Tioga Downs Casino and the place looks like the Grand Canyon ,what a shame.

The "new" Shangri-La 2 speedway is sitting up on the hill going to waste as well... I haven't been up to witness it myself but I'm betting that after being closed for the last few years that you would need to mow the track before you could ever race on it.... I really was hoping that the place was going to take off and do great things...

NASCAR star Landon Cassill posted a photo of the former Nazareth Speedway a few weeks ago. Seeing that track go from being a top track on the Xfinity and Truck circuit to a now grown up in-field, dirt piles on the surface and removed signage and grandstands is a real shame also.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I had to follow her aunt out to Holtz BWN, so she could drop off her car for service. As we drove past Wegmans, at the corner of East Henrietta Road and Calkins road, I SWEAR I could hear a faint roar of small block Chevy engines, powering old dirt modifieds down the back straight, with a cloud of dust trailing the field.....

RIP, Monroe County Fairgrounds......and for that matter, Shang II, too. what a waste of a good racetrack!!

Drag racing has suffered similar track failures--Old Bridge Township Raceway Park (Englishtown) was recently bulldozed.  The site was the host to numerous NHRA National Events and attracted many of the greatest drivers in the sport.

It was recently revealed that another NHRA long-time National Event location, Maple Grove (PA) is listed for sale and if it sells for use for something other than a drag strip, that would make two historic facilities on the East Coast to close for good!

If it can happen to large facilities, local ones are even more susceptible;  as we nearly saw happen with Lancaster!  No matter how successful, racing facilities are just like any other business...maybe even more so!

Concord Speedway the great Concord Speedway property was sold and is going to be redeveloped into other than a racing place.

Bulldozed...gonzo.. adios. That part of the country is hot for growth and development and the South has "too many" small tracks I guess.

Lucky ::)   for us  "nobody" wants to spend any real money to develop here so our tracks are "safe" ( ::) again). Support what you can while it's

still around.

Northeastern speedway in Waterford Vt has been restored and you can take a self guided tour.. Pay a donation at the ticket booth take a brochure and walk the track.Track is in good shape and modeled after Riverside Park. The walls are still there and in great condition ,remnants of the grandstand, ticket booth (restored) Nurse’s station is intact, starters perch, original flag poles, restored sign and four cars on the track. plenty of pics online and they have a reunion once a year... definitely a cool thing to see..

I guess the exception to the rule is Jukasa Speedway in Hagersville Ontario, the phoenix that rose from the ashes of the dormant Cayuga Speedway but we are fortunate the wealthy owners made a fortune in the native tobacco business and that is the exception rather than the rule. Improvements to be made this year haven't happened yet----the track is still a showplace with good facilities and musco lighting----but the overhaul of the main grandstand to compensate for the banking of the front straight hasn't happened yet and a bridge over the track to the pits for pedestrians is still in the planning stage. The owners recently bought an older golf course outside of Caledonia Ontario and are putting millions into improving the place with a long term goal of hosting the Canadian Open. Hope they don't lose interest in the track. The golf course was kind of an odd purchase as it has been reported one Cdn. course a week goes out of business  as the population ages

"Englishtown" has some special memories for me. Although I've spent a little over 90% of my life in western NY, I'm originally from the central NJ area. On a couple of visits back to NJ that my family made, when I was in my mid-20s, I managed to make it to Raceway Park, to catch what they called a "weekly show". I was amazed at the number of cars that were there, and not just street/strip cars, but a large number of "full-tilt" race cars. I distinctly remember the cars in Pro Stock, as that was a popular, newly emerging class back then. It was like a "who's who" of east coast Pro Stockers, and as I said, what I saw was just a typical Sunday show.

It's a shame to see a track with that storied history laying dormant.

A similar situation is also occurring here in western NY. Golf, a LONG TIME leisure activity, is also showing a loss of interest here, too. 2-3 well known courses in the Rochester area have closed up over the last 3-4 years, after having enjoyed stellar success for DECADES. Also look at the sport of bowling. At one point in the Rochester area, there were probably 25 bowling centers of varying sizes, from 8 lanes to 100 lanes, that were BUSY all the time. Now there are just a handful of centers in operation.

Apparently, times DO change....
