The Hill Speedway in Monroeton, Pa. closed out a very successful season on Friday night with the help of long time motorsports supporter and loyal marketing partner Snell Metalfab. Track management had tentatively scheduled racing past last weeks Championship night, but due to the weather, the shortage of competitors due to conflicts with end of season shows at other venues, and the fact that local school sports are opening up, the decision to end the season was made. The awesome support throughout the summer from fans, sponsors, and competitors alike is much appreciated, and The Hill looks forward to a bigger and better sesson in 2021.
      The chilly temps and low car count had little effect on the excitement generated on the track Friday night as side by side racing and last lap passes were abundent through all seven classes.
      Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder Champion made it ten wins this season, and eight in a row. Much of the race featured a five car battle at the front of the field.
      There were three different leaders in the first half of the Rear Wheel Drive Four Cylinder feature, but after lap ten, it was the Larry Colton show. After winning two previous features, the veteran ended up second in points in his  ..division.
      Bobby Maynard ended his season with a win in the Pure Stock division. Maynard stepped out to the lead at the drop of the green, and paced the field for the entire twenty laps.
      Dustin Maynard was the third different leader of the Street Stock feature when he took command on the fifth lap. He fought off numerous challenges to grab his second feature win of the season.
      2018 Champion Gary Lamphere has been picture perfect the past couple of weeks and this week was no different as he recorded his third feature win in a row to close out The Hill season in the IMCA Style Modifieds.
      The new Crate Late Model division has seen five different winners in their debut season, but Chad Homan has has owned Victory Lane since the end oof June. He put another check mark in the win column Friday night.
       Snell Metalfab Crate Sportsman Champion Rich Talada started mid pack , but by the sixth lap he had taken the top spot and hung on to win his fifth feature of the season.

Guererri, Bay, Pangrazio, Burnell also claim 1st LOLR titles in 2020 regular-season finale

2020 was certainly a season of firsts around the motorsports circuit and in most fitting fashion five first-time champions were crowned at Land Of Legends Raceway on Clar's Collision & Honeoye Auto Parts Night.

Double points were on the line in the final regular-season 'Saturday Spectacular' and Larry Wight made every one count as a fourth-place feature race finish locked up his first title in the headline Pepsi Big-Block Modified division.

“(Title) means a lot, so much history around this place,” remarked Wight, 27, after continuing his most memorable first full campaign circling Canandaigua's historic half-miler on the Ontario Co. Fairgrounds. Despite any restrictions put in place by the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, the Phoenix NY pilot ran wide-open on every occasion, parking his potent #99L FX Caprara Honda-Tracey Road Equipment/Bicknell entry in victory lane five times in the rolled back 12-race schedule.

“We actually planned on running tracks other than Fulton on Saturdays this year even if it opened, focusing more on our Big-Block program. We started out the season really strong here and kinda used Canandaigua for our baseline package. My teammates have done well here in the past so we're fortunate to continue that success and get the championship, even with most of our wins coming in non-point events.”

Joining Wight with high point honors in '20 were Matt Guererri (Speed Connection Sportsman), Alysha Bay (Mike Emhof Motorsports 305 Sprint Car), Josh Pangrazio (Street Stock) and Tyler Burnell (Hobby Stock).

Accompanied by multi-time Modified points champ Matt Sheppard, Bay and Pangrazio punctuated their success with return appearances to victory lane, while Garrison Krentz (Spt) and Marc Minutolo (Hob) savored their first checkered flags of the season in wine country. Subbing for his son Tyler, open-wheel veteran Rich Vinson brought the curtain down on the Sept. 5 showdown with a dominating performance in the Sportsman B-Main.

Needing a finish of sixth-place or better in 35-lap Big-Block feature following qualifying heats, 17th-starting Wight struggled early in traffic before bolting from 10th to fifth on a lap 18 restart then settling for his ninth top-5 finish to secure the season championship.

“Finally got a restart on the top, those restarts on the bottom we just couldn't catch a break,” lamented 'Lightning Larry,' who bested 2018 track champ Erick Rudolph in the final points tally, 495-441, after dueling with Tim Fuller much of the way. “We just needed to get that top side restart to take advantage of everybody choked up on the bottom. Got the one run and a guy didn't want me there and put us into the concrete barrier and lost six spots, so we had to come back after that. Just came a little bit too late.”

“We had a good car, just got used up a little bit but we were able to hold on. Tough to see Tim fall out of the race but we had just cleared him so its not like we got by him breaking there,” added Wight, who arrived late Saturday after a broken air valve on his own truck forced quick repair work back at his shop north of Syracuse.

Outside pole-sitter Eldon Payne Jr. led in the early stages before north country regular Billy Dunn moved out front taking the high line on a lap eight restart. Sheppard found his lucky number Saturday night, charging high around Dunn on lap 16 after starting 16th, eventually out-distancing Jimmy Phelps for his 16th win of 2020 to collect the $2,000 top prize.

“We didn't really get going there in the beginning, got jammed up, myself and Timmy Sears, must have passed each other about 10 times,” relayed nine-time and reigning LOLR points king Sheppard following his 80th career (5th all-time) Big-Block triumph in Canandaigua. It was his second win in only six starts after opening the shortened season contending downstate at Orange Co. Fair Speedway in Middletown.

“Got a really good restart and caught a break, not sure what lap but went from about sixth to second there. Just had a really good car, could roll the bottom in (turns) three and four, and really felt good rolling around the top. This place was awfully fast. Just thankful (car) stayed together and we got back to victory lane here. Close a couple weeks ago, Larry and I had a helluva battle. He's been really fast here all year, congrats to him. You know, this #9s is still pretty fast here too,” smiled Sheppard, as the Waterloo driver posed alongside his potent Hurlock Auto&Speed-Westmoreland Golf Glub-St.Lawrence Radiology/Bicknell machine.

With Dunn out front, Sheppard methodically made his way to the front of the field until blasting from sixth into the runner-up spot on a pivotal lap 13 restart. 'Super Matt' tracked down Dunn and used another restart on lap 16 to forge the final lead change; at the time Fuller held down third while Wight finally cracked the Top-10 and  a quick calculation had both drivers tied in the points chase.

Yet after Wight rocketed into fifth at the halfway mark, Fuller failed to improve his position and when he slowed with rear-end issues on lap 31 to incur the seventh and final caution period, any title hopes slipped away handing Wight the title.

Sheppard went on to score a comfortable eight car-length victory over Phelps followed by Dunn, Wight and Alan Johnson, who vaulted into third in the final point standings as the only driver to log all top-10 feature finishes during the season.

Wight now adds his name to the list of 10 other legendary drivers sharing 44 track titles since founder Glenn Donnelly launched the DIRTcar era at Canandaigua in 1977. Steve Paine owns a Big-Block best 11 championships followed by Sheppard (9), Bob McCreadie (6), Alan Johnson (5), Will Cagle (4), Danny Johnson (4), Joe Plazek (2), Chuck Akulis, Billy Decker and Rudolph.

While Wight eventually authored a landslide victory in the final Modified tally, pursuit of the overall Sportsman title ultimately ended in a 'dead heat' between Guererri and Zach Sobotka, with both drivers matched at 453 markers after 13 events. The tie-breaker went to Gibbz as the Waterloo warrior won a division-best five features compared to a pair for first-year track regular Sobotka from Parish.

“I was car counting before we even started the race,” exclaimed Guererri, who rallied in the closing laps to earn the tie before being awarded his first track title. “Once you get some green flag laps you kinda forget about it for awhile but at the end gotta be thankful for that last caution when I was able to pass a few more cars.”

“Didn't think I was gonna get there, (Sobotka) was a little bit better than I was tonight and could pick his way to the front. He could maneuver better than I could, just thankful we had some cautions there at the end when I was able to get a few more guys,” added Guererri, after steering his #12G Tradition Automotive Group-Product 9-Mohawk Northeast/Bicknell car to the elusive title.

While Guererri filed into 18th on the 26-car grid, Western New York traveler Krentz had less ground to make up starting outside row four. Sam Hoxie built a commanding lead to open the 25-lapper with Cody Manitta and Chris Mackey contesting for runner-up laurels early on.

Krentz jockeyed into the show position through a handful of laps while top point-getters Sobotka (12th), Guererri (13th) and Kevin Ridley (20th) had their work cut out with three and four-wide racing filling the half-mile oval further back. Krentz grabbed second from Manitta on lap 12 and only needed three more times around to overtake Hoxie, who caught the berm low between turns one and two to relinquish the point with 10 to go.

By lap 15, now Krentz showed the way in his no. 56 WNY Amateur Sports-Mark's Plumbing-ConEquip/Bicknell mount as Sobotka improved to eighth while Guererri was mired in 11th in search of a faster line around. When brother Nick Guererri slowed on lap 22 to bring out the last yellow flag, fourth-running Sobotka was just three laps from the outright title as Guererri could only manage eighth.

Back under green, Krentz continued to set an unbeatable pace yet the order in his rear-view mirror fluctuated just as fast. With three to go Sobotka moved into third and Guererri pulled into sixth, then in a last-gasp bid down low stole fifth from Dalton Martin on the white flag lap to send scorers reeling and point-keepers refiguring in the dramatic countdown.

“Its about time, been fighting all year and working so hard, it finally paid off,” stated an emotional Krentz, 29, after the Pendleton pilot became the third first-time Sportsman victor at LOLR this summer, emerging as the 116th different winner since the class debuted at the fairgrounds in 1987. “Its just me and my dad so it feels good to finally get here.”

“Changed the shock package and some springs around, kind of went back to the basics. Usually we're not as good here when its tacky but it played out tonight. We had a decent starting position and that helped out. Couldn't do this without all my sponsors, can't thank everybody for helping out,” added Krentz, who climbed from seventh to fourth on the final points chart.

Towing in from Rome NY, Mackey finished a season-high second in only his sixth start, shadowed by Sobotka with Kane Bristol keeping Guererri at bay across the stripe to round out the front-five.

“Hats off to (LOLR promoter) Paul Cole for putting his neck on the line and giving us a place to race here every Saturday,” said Guererri, who went winless last season before nearly doubling his career total in 2020. “Came here with my uncle in 2007, now to be here and do this, its like a dream come true.”

“Can't thank everybody enough that helped me along the way. They've all been so supportive, especially my wife. I've been a bear this week, haven't slept and been miserable, but (championship) is all worth it in the end,” added the relieved champion, after folllowing in the tire tracks of his still active uncle, Paul Guererri, the '07 LOLR Sportsman champion and all-time division winner with 45 checkered flags.

Like Guererri, Bay kept her winning ways in the family, taking her track-high third 305 win of the '20 campaign en route to earning season-long honors. Yet the gal from Gorham established one other standard never to be matched by her father Darryl Ruggles, the all-time LOLR sprint winner (39) and five-time titlist, as she emerged as the first-ever female points champion in 57 years of auto racing at the fairgrounds.

“The way I won (title) this year probably means more than winning tonight,” figured Bay, who gave herself an early birthday present before turning 27 on Monday. She was the only champion to overcome a deficit entering the final points program on Saturday, finishing ahead of her father and last week's leader Bobby Parrow in the final standings.

“I started out the season with two blown motors, it was pretty rough. So to come away with the championship means a lot. Was trying to breathe at the end. Didn't know where the 2nd-place car was behind me so I just ran it hard all the way.”

Bay pulled the pole for the 20-lap A-Main and from there her 'hot pink' #48A Batzel's Auto Service-Danny Willmes Enterprises-Ruggles World of Auto Body/Eagle sprinter  would not be touched. Looking for his first career MEM 305 win at LOLR, runner-up Steve Glover kept it close most of the way yet Bay held on for a decisive four car-length victory in the non-stop caution-free affair.

Defending track champ Ruggles' third-place finish was good enough to move into second on the points chart while Kyle Pierce and Trevor Years completed the top-five in the six minute main. Holding a four-point advantage over Bay entering the finale, mechanical problems forced winged veteran Parrow to the pits on lap 18 while running in the top-10.

Pangrazio made his first full season at Canandaigua a repeat of his run the previous year closer to home at Genesee Speedway in Batavia, with the full-fender chauffeur posting a multitude of feature wins and earning the track points in convincing fashion.

“Been working real hard, able to get a little bit faster every time out,” noted Pangrazio, whose victory lane speech revealed that his sleek no. 7 Skyline RV Sales & Service-Houseman Refrigeration-Impressions Concrete Ford Mustang had already been sold leaving plans for 2021 undetermined despite a new car on order. “This place is pretty fast and there's a lot of stiff competition here. I learned a lot as a driver and set-up wise.”

His closest rivals may have learned just as much over the summer: whenever Pangrazio is out front in the feature he has a fifty percent chance of taking the trophy. In 10 Street Stock features staged at LOLR, the Oakfield ace scored five victories, finishing in the front-five on all but one occasion.

Three-time winner Jimmy Grant finished runner-up on Saturday and is the lone driver to place among the top-5 in every show. All-time Canandaigua stock car winner Mike Welch won the remaining two events and salvaged third in the latest 20-lap feature. And its no surprise that Pangrazio (568), Grant (538) and Welch (528) also ended the season 1-2-3 in points.

Bob Buono jumped out to an early advantage with 18 entries filling the field. A turn four scuffle on the opening circuit resulted in Pat Hobbs getting turned around and eighth starting Welch moved in quickly to challenge Buono on the lap two restart.

Starting ninth on the grid, Pangrazio wasted little time charging to the front although his bid for the top prize almost came to an abrupt halt when Marc Minutolo suffered a broken driveshaft on lap five right in front of the points leader. Yet on the ensuing restart, third-running Pangrazio ducked under Buono in a drag race down the front chute and exiting turn one grabbed a lead he would hold for the duration.

Pangrazio cruised out to a three-quarters straightaway lead at the halfway point and 10 laps later stretched it out to 7.8-sec. at the line. Grant, Welch and Buono maintained their distance while Jared Hill completed the final top-5.

“Dodged a bullet a couple times out there tonight, just have to count my blessings,” divulged Pangrazio, an eight-time heat winner, who led at one time in nearly every event for a total of 105 laps. “Almost tangled with the #122 car going into (turn) three, then the #25 (Minutolo) in turn two and got hooked up with the #93 coming out of four. Our bumpers locked but kept it straight, have to be thankful for that.”

“Have a lot of people to thank, my girlfriend Rebecca, my mom, brother Eric and  especially my buddy Josh. If it wasn't for him we wouldn't be doing this, he works harder than I do,” Pangrazio added.

HURRICANE STEVE PAINE PICKS UP THE WIN IN FIRST EVENT OF THE OUTLAW SPEEDWAY FALL SERIES.
Donnie Lawson and Alex Payne take Sportsman features.  Guererri in Street Stocks, Minutolo wins Hobby Stocks and Webster takes Mini Stock feature.

(Dundee, NY) After a one week break it was back to business at the Outlaw Speedway as track owner, Tyler Siri opened the facility to round one of the all new Fall Series at the Yates County facility. 
With one hundred-five machines in the pit area representing the six classes of competition the Hoosier Tire Sportsman Division was the first feature to take to the recently widened and resurfaced Outlaw Speedway for their twenty-five-lap event.  Third generation pilot, Alex Payne picked right back up where he left off by claiming the feature win, his fourth in the class during the 2020 season.  Payne, who was also victorious two weeks ago before the break found the new surface much to his liking as he stormed into the lead from his inside row two starting position and never looked back in claiming the win.  Payne, who is one of several drivers that races in both Sportsman Divisions has found the extra seat time valuable in accelerating his young career along and with one win earlier this season on the American Racer Tires shows his diversification on both tire brands.  Payne was followed across the line by Andrew Jacobson who in a rare Outlaw Speedway appearance followed Payne thru traffic from his third row starting position to claim the runner up spot while 2020 Sunrise Insulation American Racer Tire Track Champion, Karl Comfort bolted on the Hoosier Tires, started eighth and came home for third at the finish.  AJ Lloyd had perhaps the drive of the event by starting twelfth and advanced eight positions claiming fourth while Stacy Jackson lined up tenth and rounded out the top five.
In the companion American Racer Tire Sportsman Division presented by Sunrise Insulation Donnie Lawson showed that he hasn’t lost his touch at Outlaw Speedway wheeling a Crate Sportsman machine as he moved into the lead from his third row starting spot and claimed the twenty-five-lap feature go.  The racing schoolteacher who resides in Addison, NY normally runs his Modified when coming to Outlaw, but on this night opted to compete in the Sportsman Division and it was a wise choice as he would claim the win.  Likewise, Kenny Peoples Jr., who also resides in Addison came well prepared and without racing at Outlaw since his win in last year’s Dutch Hoag Memorial Sportsman event finished right behind Lawson in the runner-up spot after lining up fourth on the opening grid. The back and forth, see saw battle between Lawson and Peoples wasn’t determined till late in the going with Lawson picking up the win.  One-time 2020 feature event winner, Billy Paine advanced nine positions from his outside row six starting position and rounded out the top three podium finishers at the double checkered flags.  Chris Fisher put on another steady performance to claim fourth while Ajay Potrzebowski Jr. ran with the lead pack all race long and rounded out the top five at the finish.
A top-notch field of some twenty-two machines lined up for the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modified thirty lap feature event including a who’s who list of many high-profile drivers in the northeast. The going was as bit tough for the Mod Squad as a bone jarring wreck and subsequent extended red flag during the event eliminated many of the more dominate cars including those of Brady Fultz, Danny Johnson and Kyle Coffey.  Fultz had a left rear tire let go and from there it was madness as he was hit hard by no less than three other cars literally destroying the rear end of his potent #70 machine.  The Doctor, Danny Johnson suffered equally as much frontend damage on his modified.  Likewise, Coffey had irreparable damage and was done for the night.  In a separate incident, Super Matt Sheppard barrel rolled his machine several times entering the turn one area.  Although Sheppard’s car ended up on all four wheels, he too had significant damage to his #9s.  With many of the top teams out of the event it made The Hurricane, Steve Paine’s life a whole lot easier as he was well in front of any instances having drawn pill four and lined up in the second row at the start of the event.  In clean air Paine could pick and choose his lines and would go on to his third win of 2020 at the track that he once dominated during the 358 Modified. He was followed across the line by Ron Cartwright Jr. who had his best finish at the speedway in recent memory after having much early season success as a top five regular.  Cartwright lined up fifteenth at the start, stayed out of trouble and came home in the runner-up spot putting on perhaps the drive of the night.   Jim LaRock, piloting one of car owner Herbie Wright’s modifieds on this night as LaRock’s mount is down with engine woes finished third at the completion as he was chased across the line by Jordan Siri who raced with the leaders all event and came across the line in fourth.  Like Cartwright before him, Derrick Podsiadlo also lined up in the eighth starting row, avoided the big wreck and came home for his best finish of the 2020 campaign by rounding out the top five after a regular season full of nothing but problems and bad luck. 
The Stan’s No Tubes Street Stocks has been the playground for 2020 Track Champion, Glen Whritenour who dominated the regular season action.  However, during the first event of the all new Outlaw Speedway Fall Series it was a different story for the man who won nine regular season feature events.  With GW drawing the third starting position it was a foregone conclusion that he would cruise to another win at the Yates County oval.  However, that was not the case as he had problems and wound up finishing deep in the field.  This left the door wide open for a host of other very capable drivers including June 12 feature winner, CJ Guererri who lined up sixth, moved to the front and never looked back in taking the victory in the twenty lap A Main event.  For Guererri it ended an exceptionally long dry spell as he was followed across the finish line by Jimmy Grant who had to start deep having lined up ninth in the fourteen-car field.  Like Grant, Kane Stebbins also started in the fifth row, put on a steady drive towards the front and wound up third.  Brandon Birdsell drew the pole position, ran with the lead pack the entire distance and finished fourth, but it was Quinn Sutherland who would wind up advancing the most positions.  The opening night winner lined up thirteenth at the start, moved nicely thru traffic and rounded out the top five at the finish. 
The IMCA Hobby Stocks found track regular Jamie Eldredge Jr. and invader Jeredd Dennis bringing the fourteen-car field to the opening green flag.  Second row starter and three-time 2020 feature winner, Marc Minutolo wasted little time in moving to the front and from there the 2018/2019 Track Champion picked up the win in the twenty-lap thriller.  Dennis, a veteran of many different full fender classes during his career and a Woodhull Raceway Hobby Stock weekly competitor took full advantage of his outside pole starting spot and came away with the runner-up spot.  Shawn Lloyd lined up sixth at the start and advanced three spots to claim third at the finish as he was followed across the line by fourth place finisher Tyler Burnell.  Jeff Hand would put on the drive of the night as he advanced from the last starting row to round out the top finishers. 
The Might 4 Cylinder Mini Stocks completed the Super Six feature events with the usual mix of both front and rear wheel machines. With the noticeable absence of top runners Bob Doolittle, Scott Lehman Jr. and recently crowned 2020 Class Champion, Jeremy Bunn it left the dance floor wide open to a potentially new winner.  At the completion of the twenty-lap main event it was a pair of new faces claiming the top two spots.  Josh Webster was able to get his first win of the season as he was followed across the line by Jack Ormsby who nailed the runner-up spot.  Jayson Smart advanced forward three positions to claim third while as he would be followed across the line by Travis Webster and Chris Force who finished fourth and fifth.

Next Friday, September 18, 2020 it will be round two of the scheduled eight race Fall Series at the Outlaw Speedway.  The Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modifieds will headline the Super 6 Show accompanied by the Sunrise Insulation American Racer Sportsman as well as the Hoosier Tire Sportsman.  Also, on the card it will be the Stan’s No Tubes Street Stocks along with the IMCA Hobby Stocks and the Mighty 4 Cylinder Mini Stocks.
Pit gates open at 5:30, hot laps at 6:30 with the first green flag waving at 7:30 pm.

BECHTELSVILLE, PA September 10, 2020 . . . Many of the top names in dirt track Modified stock car racing will be there trying but the big question is, “Who will win the pot of gold, $35,550, for beating many of the top names in dirt track Modified racing in the 50th Annual Freedom 76?” That question will be answered on Saturday, September 19th at Grandview Speedway. And there are many top names in the sport that are still without a win in the prestigious race. Many past winners and non-winners will be entered in the Annual Freedom 76 Classic, the richest event of its type in the area at this point in the season. And there is lap money to be added to the pot of gold.

Some of the past winners of the Freedom 76 include Fred Rahmer, the late Doug Hoffman, Billy Pauch (six times a winner), Ray Swinehart, Stewart Friesen, Kenny Brightbill, Meme DeSantis (three times a winner), Craig Von Dohren (a five time winner), Jeff Strunk (seven times a winner) Duane Howard (five wins) and last year it was Mike Gular. The list goes on. Some of them will be back trying to add to their impressive resumes.

And there will be many top names looking to gain that first win. Entered or expected to enter are Billy Pauch Jr., Ryan Godown, Ryan Watt, Brett Kressley, Keith Hirthler, Jared Umbenhauer, Doug Manmiller, Mike Lisowski, Clay Butler, Bobby Trapper, with many more to come. Larry Wight, Bobby Varin and Bill Decker are visiting racers that have expressed interest in participating.

The Saturday, September 19th event will include a full schedule of qualifying events, a $1,000 to win Kirsten Snyder Web Design & Photography Cash Dash, the Schaffer Motorsports Minuteman 20, along with heat races some carrying sponsorship from Stoudt Auto Sales, Conestoga Valley Custom Kitchens and Softwash of Lehigh Valley, and the 76-lap 50th Annual Freedom 76.

Ticket windows open at 3:00 p.m. with adult tickets priced at $40. Pit passes are priced at $45. Youngsters, 6 thru 11, pay $10 while kids under 6 are admitted free. Racing will start at 7 p.m.

The night before the Freedom 76 there will be the Freedom 38 offering many top Sportsman talents a chance to go home with $3,550 for a victory in the 38 lap race. There is no entry fee or license required. Modifieds entered in the Freedom 76 will be allowed practice time. Adult admission is $15 while youngsters, 6 thru 11, pay $5 and kids under 6 enter free. Start time for Friday is 7:30 p.m.

Both nights of racing will have Competition Carburetion offering a $50 award for the fast lap in each feature event. At the end of the season a $500 Grand Prize will be presented in a random drawing courtesy of Competition Carburetion.

The 50th Annual Freedom 76 will close out the regular Saturday night schedule of racing events except for the October 17th Thunder on the Hill Trick or Treat Triple 20s for Modifieds along with Sportsman racing.

KIRKWOOD, NY…Saturday night was Season Championship night at Five Mile Point Speedway which determined the 2020 Track Champions and ended the regular season of racing.  Third generation Crate Sportsman Rookie Seth Zacharias raced to his first career win in the 20 lap main event.  Gary Smith, who finished second claimed his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway Track Championship in the Insinger Performance Crate Sportsman division.  The post season starts on Sunday, September 13th with a fall fling series for all classes.

2020 marked the 70th consecutive season of racing at Five Mile Point Speedway.  Prior to start of the season a big schedule had been put in place for the anniversary season.  Things certainly changed in early March due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  Historically, this season will long be remembered for many things that included the first ever season with no spectators attending the racing.  Despite the NYS restrictions that were in place all season the race teams responded with outstanding racing and a renewed energy for having fun and racing hard.

Entering Saturday Gary Smith had been the point leader in the Insinger Performance Crate Sportsman division for the majority of the season.  His main contenders for the Track Championship entering Saturday were Matt Brewer, Brandon Loucks and Blaine Klinger.  For both Smith and race winner Seth Zacharias the night started off as a challenge Smith started last in the first of four heats and Zacharias started last in his heat race number two.  Both advanced far enough in their heat race to make the handicap for the feature event.  This would ultimately prove the difference in the championship hunt.

Brian Durbin and Zacharias led the twenty-seven car field to the green flag for the 20 lap championship event.  Zacharias used the racy outside line of the quarter mile to immediately take the race lead at the green.  Smith wasted no time as he advanced from fourth to second place on lap 1 and Tighe Sherlock followed Smith to immediately advance from fifth to third.  The first caution of the race flew on lap 5 and on the restart Smith worked past Zacharias for the race lead.  Unfortunately for Smith the caution flew again nullifying the pass.  For Zacharias, it was a wake up call and wasn’t caught off guard again.

When racing resumed Zacharias pulled ahead with Smith, Sherlock, Benke and Durbin all running in the top five slots.  It didn’t take long for the leaders to find lapped traffic as the race went caution free for an extended time.  Zacharias had established his lead over the field by the halfway mark but lapped traffic began to allow Smith to close the gap again.  At this point twenty-five of the original starters were still on the track.  The final caution of the race flew on lap 17 as a multi-car tangle took place.  This again put the veteran driver Smith on the back of the rookie for the restart.

Zacharias responded like multi-season driver when the green flew as he again opened his advantage over Smith.  When the checkered flags flew Zacharias had earned his first ever Sportsman victory.  Smith finished second and that was enough to secure his first ever Five Mile Point Speedway Track Championship.  Tighe Sherlock had another impressive outing coming home in third with Benke and Loucks completing the top five. Bobby Flood wound up fifth after starting ninth.  Last weeks winner Tyler Johnston was seventh, Joe Gustella finished eight with Matt Brewer advancing from eighteenth to finish ninth.  James Cornell made his return to racing and scored the tenth position.

Bob Hamm entered the evening as the point leader in the 600 Modified division.  His top contender for the Track Championship was multi-time feature winner Brett Gray.  Eli Akshar and Hamm started on the front row but it certainly would not be an easy event for Hamm. Akshar took the early race lead in the 20 lap feature event.  Gray wasted no time as he moved from his third starting position into the race lead on lap 3.  The title hopes for Hamm were in jeopardy as the caution flew as he was involved in a multi-car wreck in turn 1.  Hamm wound up with a flat tire and headed to the pits.  It looked as if Gray could possibly win the race and the track title.  As the race was about to go green Hamm made it back on the speedway and restarted in the rear.  At the green Gray immediately pulled away from Doug Lattner as he hoped to secure the track title and the win.  Hamm began to work his way back through the field as he was looking to protect his point lead and title hopes.  On lap 13 James Randall worked past Lattner for second place Chelse Beebe and now Hamm were in the top five. The final caution of the race flew on lap 17 when Randall spun Hamm in turn 1 as the race for second had heated up.  Hamm was able to pull away from the wreck and Randall headed to the pits.  The final restart saw Gray quickly open up his lead and go on for another win.  For the second straight week he collected his own bounty this time winning $450 for the victory.  Lattner, Dave Brown, Jason Sullivan and Akshar rounded out the top five.  Hamm finished sixth which proved to be enough to lock up his first Five Mile Point Speedway Track Championship.  His dad was a former Mini-Stock Champion at the speedway.

A tight point battle was taking place in the Factory Stock division as Justin Slezak entered the night as the point leader with Ray Lindquist and Adam Gilbert both within striking distance of the title.  Slezak took the initial lead in the 20 lap feature event but for the second straight week Josh Dumas powered past to take the point on lap 3.  The caution flew on lap 5 and on the restart Slezak re-established himself as the race leader.  His lead would again be short lived as two laps later Dumas again took over the top spot.  The leaders had a furious battle as Lindquist saw his title hopes extinguished as he headed to the infield on lap 7.  Dumas again looked for his first ever win but ultimately, he would see heartbreak again.  With only one lap remaining Dumas had a wheel come off exiting turn 2 taking away his victory hopes.  The week prior he had crossed the finish line first only to have the win taken away in post-race inspection.  Slezak would lead the last lap for the win and secure his first ever title in the process. Dumas made it back out to finish second with Kurtis Stickle having his best of the season in third.  Adam Gilbert and Billy Shoemaker completed the top five finishers.

Walter Decker entered the evening chasing Tim Vandemark in the FWD Four Cylinder Expert class title battle.  Decker led every lap to record his second straight win and collect the posted bounty on Vandemark.  Vandemark finished in second which was enough to lock up the Track Championship in the class. Dave Simms, Tim Degroat and Ken Evans crossed the line in that order.

Doug Newbigging and Owen Clark entered the evening tied for the point lead in the FWD Novice division and the duo matched each other’s effort the entire race.  Bethany Bertram raced out to the early lead but Newbigging took over on lap 2.  Clark chased Newbigging the entire race for the race lead and ultimately the Track Championship.  On the final lap Clark dove under Newbigging making contact as the two raced inches apart to the finish line.  Newbigging was credited for the win and the Track Championship with Clark finishing second.  The two congratulated each other with great sportsmanship in post-race inspection.  Gregg Slater, Austin Slater and Mike Jenks completed the top five.

Jeremy Warren led wire to wire in the 20 lap Crate Sportsman Futures division.  It was his first career win in the Crate Sportsman class.

Avery Decker was the Juniors Inner Loop winner and champion.

KRESSLEY POSTS BACK-TO-BACK MODIFIED FEATURE WINS; BELTZ SCORES SEASON FIRST SPORTSMAN WIN AND JOSKO TAKES 600 MOD WIN AFTER WINNER WHITBY WAS DISQUALFIED AT GRANDVIEW

BECHTELSVILLE, PA. AUGUST 30, 2020. . . Despite a lengthy rain delay, the racing on Saturday night at Grandview Speedway was able to be completed through the diligent work of the track crew and cooperation from the participants.

Eric Biehn came up five laps short of racking up his first 30-lap T.P. Trailers Modified NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts feature career win. Brett “The Threat” Kressley, who started 16th, chased Biehn down through the aid of lap traffic and was able to overtake him to score back to back feature victories.

The 25-lap T.P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman feature was decided in the closing stages also. Ryan Beltz, kept edging his way to the front and with two laps remaining he passed Steve Young for the lead and went on to capture his first win of the season in the event that went non-stop. Beltz became the tenth different winner of the season in the Sportsman division.

Erik Whitby led all 15 laps of the Excel 600 modified feature and crossed the line first, but was later disqualified. The win was most likely awarded to runner-up Jon Josko but as the speedway emptied Excel officials hadn’t really declared who the winner was.

Modified and Sportsman feature winners that met the necessary requirements received monetary awards from T.P. Trailers and a certificate from VP Fuels for product awards. The Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award recipients were Biehn and Young.

Darrin Schuler grabbed the early lead in the Modified feature from his second starting berth in the 28-car lineup to set the pace trailed by Mark Levy, Biehn, Richie Hitzler and Ryan Lilick.

The one and only caution period was brought out on the 11th lap by Jeff Strunk when he slowed his pace with a right rear flat tire. He was able to rejoin the field after a quick pit stop. On the restart Biehn shot past Schuler to become the new pacesetter. The battle for positions behind him was soon hot and heavy between Lilick, Kressley, Schuler and Hitzler.

Lap cars entered the picture around the 22nd circuit which made Biehn use caution to get around them. This situation allowed Kressley to close the distance and overtake second from Lilick on the 24th lap.

One lap later the lead changed for the third time with Kressley at the head of the pack.

Kressley never looked back once he gained control and was in the winner’s circle for the third time. Coming on strong at the end was runner-up and former point champion Mike Gular. Biehn and Lilick finished third and fourth for their best finishes with Doug Manmiller coming home in fifth. Sixth through tenth were Hitzler, Craig Von Dohren, Ryan Grim, Duane Howard and Lauden Reimert.

Ryan Grim, Hitzler, Kressley and Biehn won the heats. The consies were won by Alex Yankowski and Craig Whitmoyer.

Young, who started on the pole, took the lead on the initial start of the Sportsman feature with pressure coming from Tom Miller, Derrick Smith, Kenny Bock and Jesse Landis. Trying earnestly to get into the top five was Jesse Leiby, who was driving Nick Faust’s No. 322 rather than his own No. 9. Leiby succeeded and moved into fifth on lap nine and was on the move.

By the 19th lap Leiby was challenging Young, but in a few laps he lost several positions as he appeared to be developing problems.

Rapidly moving toward the front was Beltz and with laps remaining was second.

It didn’t take Beltz long to get by Young for the lead and Miller followed through for second on the 24th lap.

Beltz never faltered and went on to score his fourth career win trailed by Miller, Young, Smith and Bock. Rounding out the top ten were Kyle Lilick, Jesse Leiby, Jack Butler, Landis and Nate Brinker.

Heats were won by Young, Bryan Rhoads and Bock. Chuck Eckert, last week’s feature winner won the consi.

Whitby led all the laps of the red and yellow flag filled 600 Excel Modified feature. The race was shortened to 15 laps instead of the scheduled 20 due to all the mishaps and Whitby crossed the line first. However he was disqualified and the win most likely ent to second place finisher Josko followed by Corey Sechrist, Matt Warner and Ty Hoke.

Heat winners were Sam Sciachitano and Whitby.

Saturday September 5, a rather unique ‘Hard Charger Challenge 22’ will be presented by former racer and car owner, Joe “Geezer” Fanelli for current Modified drivers running at least three races this season, not in the top 15 in points (by 8-29), and have never won a Grandview Modified feature will be eligible.

The first-of-its-kind event will not only boast a $1022.22 payout to the winner, but they will also receive a provisional starting position in the feature event that evening.

It will also carry some extra incentive cash for the competitors finishing in the runner-up and third place positions plus other rewards.

Also included in the activities will be the continuing NASCAR track championship battles for T.P. Trailers Modifieds and T.P.Truck Equipment Sportsman with action set to get under way at 7:30 p.m.

(Dundee, NY) It is now very clear what will happen with the Bounty Money that was placed on both Super Matt Sheppard and Glen Whritenour earlier in the season at Outlaw Speedway.  Sheppard in the Modifieds and Whritenour in the Street Stocks completed the regular season with feature wins on Friday night.  They along with Wayne Ellison in the IMCA Hobby Stock Division all ended the regular point season as Track Champions and all three piled up nine feature wins a piece heading into post season play.
For Sheppard he will receive the extra $2,000 that was posted and Whritenour will grab the added $500. As for both men track owner/promoter, Tyler Siri stated, “I think its only appropriate that both these great competitors receive the Bounty Money I had put up on them several weeks ago.  They both handled the situation well and no track regular or outside driver that came in here could beat either one of them.  I think it’s only fair that both take the cash now that the regular season is over with.”
For Super Matt Sheppard in the Friendly Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram Modifieds his feature win really came as no surprise, however his customary reign of terror in the thirty-lap feature event was anything but a walk in the park. Brady Fultz led the fifteen car A Main event to the opening green flag and like several other times in 2020 looked poised to take home his first Modified feature win in several seasons at Outlaw.  For some twenty plus laps he led the charge keeping both Sheppard and AJ Slideways, Alan Johnson at bay.  Eventually the two full time veteran professional drivers were able to wear down the high flying Fultz denying him of the potential $4,000 pay day and take over the top two positions with Sheppard going onto his fifth feature win in the last seven starts at the popular Yates County oval.  For Johnson it was another solid top five run as he ended up the regular season at Outlaw with a pair of feature wins and will finish second in the final point tally coming up short of backing up his 2018 Outlaw Speedway Track Championship.  For Fultz it was yet another masterful performance piloting his family owned machine and he can now set his sights on the upcoming September/October schedule of events with the confidence that he can run with the very best in the business.  Like Fultz, Kyle Coffey ran a flawless Modified feature event in finishing fourth at the finish as the Doctor Danny Johnson piloting one of track owner, Tyler Siri’s potent Modifieds sponsored by Tim Gibson of Sunrise Insulation rounded out the top five finishers and wrapped up the regular season points in third place. Coffey came up just a few points shy of The Doctor and will end the year fourth in the final point tally. 
Second verse same as the first with Glen Whritenour in the Stan’s No Tubes Street Stock’s mirroring the performance of Super Matt.  His traditional romp thru the feature field was not a cake walk by any means as he had to contend with early event leader, Jake Karlnoski who gave GW fits for the first eight laps and then had to hold off fast closing invader, Dylan Cecce to pick up the twenty lap feature win.  For Whritenour is finished off an incredible last nine weeks as he won eight of those events with just one DNF stretching back to July 3.  In a rare 2020 appearance at Outlaw, 2019 Track Champ, Cecce was definitely on a mission and looking to claim the $500 Bounty placed on Whritenour by track owner, Boss Man Siri.  Starting eleventh on the opening grid and driving the Crawford machine on this night, Cecce put on a clinic driving thru the talent ridden field and once clear of traffic was able to cut into race leader Whritenour s advantage.  With the laps winding down and no late race yellow flags to help in his cause, Cecce came up just a few car lengths short at the finish as Shawn Boyton trailed in third.  June 12 feature winner, CJ Guererri ended a consistent regular season finishing fourth at the double checkered flags while Kane Stebbins rounded out the top five.
In the Hoosier Tire Sportsman Division, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that Zach Sobotka would be crowned the 2020 class champion.  By virtue of four feature wins and a slew of other top five finishes in the class heading into the double point season point finale, Sobotka simple needed to just show up and take the opening green flag and it was official.  Tim Guild led the first fourteen laps from his front row starting position and looked to finally shake the gremlins that have plagued him through the entire 2020 race season.  Fourth generation driver, Alex Payne who had won twice thus far on the season was marching thru the field from the eighth starting spot and shot by Guild for the lead on lap fifteen and from there stretched the advantage and cruise to win three no the campaign.  Guild would hold on for a well-deserved runner up finish as he was chased across the line by Brett Buono in third. Tommy Collins Jr. capped off a great point year on the Hoosier Tire brand by finishing fourth while 2020 Track Champion, Zach Sobotka rounded out the top five.
In the Sunrise Insulation American Racer Tire Sportsman Division it was a three horse race heading into the twenty-five lap feature double point finale  One time 2020 class feature event winner, Billy Paine would lead the twenty-one car field to the opening green flag and lead the first eight laps.  Like Paine, Will Shields had also picked up one feature event earlier in the season.  He had a very patient strategy, moved around Paine for the lead on lap nine and from there it was game over as he cruised to win two on the campaign.  However, behind Shields it was nail biting time as Ajay Potrzebowski, who was leading the points heading into the event along with Chris Fisher and Karl Comfort were going at it for the title.  With double points on the line and just a few points separating the top three entering the event it could not be determined until the checkered flag waved as to who would be crowned Track Champ.  Both Fisher who won the title in 2018 and with no feature wins entering the event along with Comfort who claimed the title one year earlier in 2017 and had only one feature event thus far both had their work  cut out as Potrzebowski had been the dominate player with four feature wins.  With the laps winding down in an event that saw only three caution flags, Comfort finished second and was able to leapfrog over both Fisher and Potrzebowski and claim the title.  Early on in the event, Fisher looked positioned to earn the championship but faded late to a sixth place run just one spot ahead of Potrzebowski who dejectedly came up just a few points shy of claiming his first ever Outlaw Speedway Title.  Following both Shields and Comfort across the line was Casey Williams with an impressive third place finish followed by Zach Sobotka who was fourth and Troy Sperring in fifth.
Like the American Racer Tire Sportsman before them the IMCA Modifieds had no clear-cut favorite leading up to the last point night of the regular season.  At the beginning of the night a make-up feature for the IMCA Mods had to be run from a July 10 rainout.  In that event, Shawn Bruce was victorious for his second trip to victory lane in 2020 setting up another barn burner of a feature where anyone of three different drivers all having a mathematical chance of claiming the prestigious class title.  In the twenty-lap night cap event, invader Jared Spalding picked up his first feature win at Outlaw in 2020 after starting outside pole position.  All eyes were on the top three in points and as the double checkers waved in an event which had everyone holding their breath, Bad Brad Smith by finishing second, one position ahead of Kevin Smith who was third at the finish and Rodney Morgan who wound up fourth claimed the IMCA Modified Point Championship.  Brad Smith had but only one feature victory in 2020 on July 3 but showed great consistency on the entire season.  Kevin Smith had a pair of victories while the real story was 2018 Track Champion, Rodney Morgan who led the charge with six feature wins during the abbreviated season due to COVID 19.  Kevin Smith would finish third as the double checkered flags waved while Morgan and Shawn Bruce would claim fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the companion IMCA Hobby Stock Division it was a foregone conclusion that if Wayne Ellison could stay out of trouble, he would claim the track title.  Not only did the eight time feature winner in 2020 keep his nose clean, he charged thru the pack from his ninth starting position, went on for win number nine on the season and left little doubt that his dominating performance throughout the season truly earned him the title.  Chasing Ellison across the line in second was Jamie Eldredge Jr. while Casey Wagner would complete the top three podium spots.  Fourth went to Jack Ayers while Shawn Lloyd would round the top five finishers.  Bruce Kinner, who was second in points going into the night was unable to even start the feature helping Ellison’s cause while two time and defending class champion, Marc Minutolo all but conceded the title not even opting to compete on this night.  Minutolo had complied three feature wins along the way, but instead chose to run his Street Stock in hopes of claiming the Glen Whritenour Bounty Money.  Josh Oles was the only other feature winner in a division that saw Wayne Ellison virtually dominate the competition. 
Last but certainly not the least the Might 4 Cylinder Mini Stocks had to run their scheduled twenty lap feature event to determine the 2020 class champion.  With two men dominating the division throughout the season all eyes were on point leader, Jeremy Bunn and his closest rival, Bob Doolittle as both were not only looking at another feature win, but perhaps the class title that would go along with it. When all was said and done veteran driver, Ray Hyer had picked up his second feature event of the year as he started in row two, got to the front in a hurry and lead throughout.  He was followed across the line by Kenneth Evans and Jason Smart both of which who had their best runs of the season.  Scott Lehman was able to finish fourth at the end just one spot ahead of Jeremy Bunn who while finishing fifth would go on to his first ever Outlaw Speedway 4 Cylinder Mini Stock Track Championship.
