This was posted by JL(Jan Leaty) one year ago on a similar thread. I had to copy and paste and bring it here as it is so powerful.

As stated earlier.. many of us remember exactly where we were and what we were doing at the moment Rich was killed. I had just gotten out of my car from the first practice session, and was standing on the back straight wall, watching the 2nd session at M-ville. The 61 roared by me on the back stretch. You ALWAYS watched him because you knew he was going to be the one to beat on race day. I looked away for a moment, but then heard something wasn't right down in turn 3. We then saw the wreck. My first thought was not about Richie's safety, because I just knew he'd be fine. I said to someone next to me "that will be a move to his back up car" ( yes, probably the one I had driven in '84 )
It wasn't until Bill Colton made his way back to the Pits, ( he was driving his car then, and had stopped at the accident scene ) that I knew how bad it was.
Later, I ran into Doug Hewitt, and he had been at the hospital, and he broke the bad news. He told me then and there that he was done...
I called home with the news, crying like a baby..
I will never forget that, or the great stuff...
Race on, Richie...
