Racing Discussion / Re: RaceNewYork Forum Changes Upcoming
« on: February 18, 2021, 04:22:02 PM »
This forum software has been our home for over 10 years...and with all the changes in the world of social media over the past several years we've decided to move to a more modern platform.  Actually, this has been in the works since February 2020, but due to the abbreviated racing season last year the plans were put off until 2021.

We anticipate most everything on RaceNewYork will be transferred over. That's an important consideration because this site holds generations worth of historical content that tells much of the story of auto racing in our region.

It's my hope that the new system will allow greater ability to engage socially, whether it be from the comforts of your home computer, or from the grandstands of your favorite track. Where racing is happening in our region...we want to be there!

We are anticipating the rollout to be in the March 1, 2021 time frame.

Questions?  Request for features?   Format changes?  Use this thread to discuss them please...

Thanks for supporting RaceNewYork,

- RaceNY Admin Dave

Looking forward to it!

Racing Discussion / Re: New Smyrna 2021 World Series

Looking forward to the races at New Smyrna.  Does anyone know for sure if it will be broadcast on NBC Track Pass? If so, what package do I need to purchase?           Thanks

I believe the Gold Pass (same as the Whelen coverage last year) is what is needed.

Is anyone covering this on television/computer. Watched last years and really enjoyed it. Any info is appreciated and thanks in advance!!

I think I saw NBC Sports Gold TrackPass is covering the events. That would be the same coverage as the Whelen Modified Tour in 2020.

Actual asphalt racing in a few weeks in Florida. I was impressed by the bid modified field last year, but this year even more: 36 tour mods as of today.

http://http://speed51.com/entry-lists-are-growing-for-new-smyrnas-world-series/

Looking forward to this. Upstate NY'ers on list:  Emerling, Catalano (3), Zacharias, Rypkema (2). Bubba Pollard in a mod again this year.

Let's hope Bubba can make it out of practice this year, that was the only let down from last year's events.  Was looking forward to see what he could do in one of these machines.  Fingers crossed!

Racing Discussion / Re: 2021 Race of Champions Schedule
« on: January 14, 2021, 08:47:35 AM »
From their website -

"Race of Champions management is currently in negotiation with Spencer Speedway ownership in Williamson, N.Y., but two tentative dates that can be “penciled in” and will become firmed up, once an agreement is reached with Spencer Speedway ownership are Friday, July 30 and Friday, September 3 for the Race of Champions Modified Series."

if this happens, they are both the day before the Whelen Tour is scheduled at Lancaster July 31 and Oswego Sept 4.. Would be nice!

Modified lovers dream weekends, I remember the electricity in the air 2018 (i think?) when Preece was in one of the Leaty Modifieds at Spencer the night before the Oswego race.  A lot of talent walking around the pits that night.

Same to everyone on here!

"BOZO", could you elaborate a little bit on this? Some of us, myself included, may not be aware of what endeavor of Tommy's that you're speaking of......

Here is the story:
https://www.rocmodifiedseries.com/news/?i=88895&fbclid=IwAR1drl3aQ4UvzCdzJ1mvzA_2s1nmdXCvhiw96q7aHH5jwfnEF-8p58z5GUc

And here is the rule set for the new 602 crate class:
https://www.rocmodifiedseries.com/downloads/get.aspx?i=611623

And even a price sheet from Rocket Performance for a 602:
https://www.rocmodifiedseries.com/downloads/get.aspx?i=611624

Here's a section of the article that describes the when and where:
"The division is intended to only race at Spencer Speedway in Williamson, N.Y., and in a special event as part of Race of Champions Weekend at Lake Erie Speedway in September. When details become available on Spencer Speedway for the 2021 season, the schedule will then be released."

There is still a wealth of young talent coming out of the Sodus Microd Club hub that may not see the 4 Cylinder/6 Cylinder/Super Stock divisions as the next step and want a different stepping stone to eventually get into the premier weekly division of B-Mod/SST/Sportsman Modifieds.  Also, some of the more veteran competitors in the weekly mods that may have an old chassis and kids coming out of go-karts/microds may now find a way to dust off that old chassis all while getting their kid some seat time in V8 open wheel division.

Should be interesting to see how it all works out.

Mike, I hate to reiterate this, but as I said in another discussion on this site, I believe that short track, automobile racing, as we've known and loved it in NY, for the last 80 years, or so, is dead. We already knew that the sport was NOT on the politicians' short list of "approved" sports, and this announcement further solidifies that belief.

Furthermore, if that isn't enough, yesterday, the Rochester Red Wings, upstate NY's professional baseball team, announced that their season has been cancelled. When the "politically correct" sport of minor league baseball, a sport that has the financial support of the county, therefore is responsible to the taxpayers to make as serious an effort as possible, to generate income, to offset the expenses of operating in a county owned stadium, gets cancelled, you know that the "politicos" couldn't care less about automobile racing.

Sadly, VERY sadly, I feel it necessary to say, "RIP, NY state race tracks, you had a good run and a well deserved place in history".....................

More or less speaking to the Rochester Red Wings point, this could end up disastrous as MLB executives have hinted at cutting the number of minor league teams by 42... not good... but yeah, the amount of power and control the governor's office has in setting uneven criteria for activities that are equally low risk is absolutely terrifying. Before this is all over and done with, entire industries will have vanished and 1000's of small and regional businesses will be gone. But hey, at least the numbers are down now that he killed off the most vulnerable, and can use this as a political chip heading into the election cycle.

I imagine it has to do with the parent company.

If top 3 don't have fans yet, neither will Whelen.

This is exactly it.

Opener is June 6 th with no spectators. Check web site for more details

While that's good news, how can they possibly do that, from a financial standpoint? The local short tracks don't have the lucrative TV broadcast contracts, to supply income, so how can they run the show and pay out the prize money, without the spectators buying tickets?

Pay Per View at $15/event or $199/season. No different than sitting in the stands. But no/limited concessions may hurt.
Is this true (PPV)? that seems like a good Idea? I would PPV for some racing in our regions!

So with the chance of maybe being able to get to races in August do you think it's best for this season for tracks to run special events only?

The way the regions are broken down, tracks like Chemung (Southern Tier Region) and Wyoming County and Spencer (Finger Lakes Region) likely have a better chance at a July start time (due to being in Phase 4 of the 4 phases). The reason I say this is mostly due to the Phase 1 opening in these regions this Friday, May 15th, whereas Lancaster and Holland (Western New York Region), and Evans Mills (North Country Region) will be at least at a 1 week lag in starting to reopen. Fingers crossed for minimal setbacks.

Regardless of the "right or wrong", that is awesome. 2,811 miles in 26.63 hours = average mph of 105!

This debate is interesting in the fact that you could probably poll the general race fan population on how this stuff should be treated and you'd come up with a 50/50 or 60/40 split, which means no matter what NASCAR does, they're going to upset a decent amount of people either way.

Racing Discussion / Re: New Smyrna Healthy Mod Field
« on: February 06, 2020, 11:49:07 AM »
36 is healthy with no other track racing? LMAO
Yeah it is a healthy feild, it not the middle if August it's the middle of the off season. 95% of those mods traveled at least 1000 miles to be there. I'm sure they won't start more then 28 or so. So tell us what would you consider a healthy feild?

Exactly, for early February and 90% of the teams coming in from the north, it's definitely a healthy field.
