Are you feeling lucky? Friday’s King of the Can for Modifieds at Penn Can Speedway will give drivers the chance for bonus money by taking the Gambler’s Challenge. The Modified portion of the King of the Can Weekend will take place this Friday, featuring a $3,000 to win STAR Series race along with the GRIT Sportsman, STAR Series Factory Stocks and Four Cylinders, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Any Modified driver that would like to take part in the Gambler’s Challenge will pay $20.    This race will determine the STAR Series Champion for Modifieds. This is the fourth race of the mini-series contested at Five Mile Point, Skyline and Penn Can.
Dan Creeden is the current STAR Series point leader boosted by wins at Five Mile Point and Skyline. Second in the standings is Brett Tonkin, coming off the biggest win of his career last Friday at Five Mile Point. Rusty Smith is currently third ahead of Brian Malcolm. Shaun Walker and Danny Johnson are tied for fifth.  Seventh and eighth in the standings belong to Anthony Perrego and Mike Clapperton, with Randy Green and Tyler Siri tied for tenth.

Last year’s King of the Can for Modifieds saw Stewart Friesen notch the big win over Penn Can regulars Nick Rochinski and Joey Grammes in a hard fought battle. Friesen, coming off the win at the finale at Syracuse the week before, fought off continued pressure from Rochinski to score the victory. Anthony Perrego and Kevin Hartnett rounded out the top five last year.
This year’s Modified race is a STAR Series event for the first time. The STAR Series is a series of races run at Penn Can, Five Mile Point and Skyline. Danny Johnson is the current point leader and will be one of the favorites coming to Penn Can, where he is always a top runner.
The King of the Can Weekend is the second longest running special event in the region running on its traditional week after Super Dirt Week date. The inaugural King of the Can was held in 1999. Track regulars have won nearly half of the races run over the years beginning with Brian Weaver taking the 1999 win. Track regulars have won seven of the 16 races that have been held but have not won this race since Kevin Bates in 2010. Friesen joins Weaver and Jeff Rudalavage as the only two time winners of the race. Here is the complete list of winners:

Penn Can Speedway is located on Route 171 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.

CRATE LATE MODEL DRIVERS ADMITTED FREE THIS FRIDAY AS PART OF DRIVER APPRECIATION PROGRAM; FULL SHOW OF ALL DIVISIONS ON TAP

Penn Can Speedway will allow all competing Crate Late Model drivers in for free this Friday night as part of the Driver Appreciation Program. A full show of Modifieds, Crate Sportsman, Crate Late Models, Street Stocks, Factory Stocks and Four Cylinders will be in competition beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The new Crate Late Model division was announced over the winter and has begun its first full season this year at Penn Can. As expected, car counts have been low as the class is just getting started. “We have had a lot of interest in the class but a lot of guys wanted to wait to see how it goes. Honestly we went into this year hoping to get up to around six to eight cars and then 12 to 14 next year”, said Promoter Dan Harpell. “We are 100% committed to the Crate Late Models and will give them as long as it takes to grow the class. We are right about where we thought we would be this year. This class will take off now that guys are seeing the commitment that we have made to the class.”, he added.
This Friday night you can expect a few invaders. Fulton Speedway, who runs them on Saturday’s will not be running them this Saturday night so we have heard from some guys that want to make the trip down to Penn Can to try it out. With it being free admission for all competing Crate Late Model drivers it should help get a few more cars to compete. Plus they will be allowed to run their Hoosier tires for two weeks if they choose to come down and race at Penn Can.
The track runs on American Racer tires as part of the CARS program that they offer. Penn Can is one of only three tracks on the program, which is modeled after the American Racer Cup Program for the Modifieds and Sportsman. It uses your best 12 finishes to determine an overall champion. The overall champion will take home $5,000 with the top twenty positions receiving point fund money. Twentieth spot pays $250. In addition there will be five tires given away through random draws during the season and the top five in track points will receive tires or certificates for discounted tires based on where they finish in the points. The track champion will receive four tires for winning the title.
“The CARS Program is a tremendous deal for Crate Late Model drivers”, said Harpell. “You can race one night a week, without having to travel all over the northeast and take home a good chunk of change at the end of the season”.
Penn Can Speedway is the first exit across the New York/Pennsylvania border in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, approximately an hour and twenty minutes from Syracuse. The Crate Late Model heats and features will be first this Friday. Pit gates open at 5:00 p.m., grandstand gates at 5:30 p.m. and race time is 7:30 p.m.
With a 7:30 p.m. start time, it allows teams plenty of time to travel to the track on a Friday. By running the Crate Late Model feature first you can expect to be able to be on your way home by around 8:30 p.m. so it won’t be a late night. On a normal Friday night all of the racing is generally done between 10:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
For questions on rules simply log onto penncan.com and check out the Crate Late Model section of the rule book. The Penn Can Crate Late Models follow the same guidelines as Fulton and the Go Nuclear Late Models.

HALF PRICE GRANDSTAND ADMISSION THIS FRIDAY FOR EVERYONE; BIKE RACES FOR KIDS TO BE SPONSORED BY S&R GRAFICS AND RYAN STONE MOTORSPORTS; COMPETING STREET STOCK DRIVERS ADMITTED FREE OF CHARGE

Penn Can Speedway fans have another reason to be excited about this Friday night at the track. Promoter Dan Harpell has just announced that the track will be offering half price admission this Friday night for everyone in the grandstand. That means that an adult ticket will be just $6, senior citizens age 62 and older will get in for just $5 and kids age 13-17 will pay just $4 for admission to the races this Friday night. Of course kids age 12 and under are always free at Penn Can.
It was announced on Friday night that everyone in attendance that brought their raincheck back this Friday would get in for half price. Now the offer has been extended to everyone so rainchecks will not be needed to take advantage of this great opportunity.
“We had a great crowd last Friday for our Bike Night and would like to encourage our fans to continue to come out to the races for a great night of family fun”, said Harpell. “This is our way of thanking our fans for their continued support of Penn Can Speedway”.
Last Friday Penn Can Speedway gave away 130 bicycles to kids that were in attendance thanks to the efforts of Gary Folk, Jr. and his wife Fran. It was announced that if kids bring back their bikes this Friday night along with a helmet they will be able to go down on the track and compete in bike races. It is open to any kids that wish to bring a bike to the track, not just those that won one last week.
Since Friday night’s announcement, Ryan Stone from S&R Grafics and Ryan Stone Motorsports has stepped up to sponsor awards for the Bike Races on Friday night. Stone, a regular in the Crate Sportsman division at Penn Can, also does all of the signage work for the track. “The bike night is always great and I hope that the kids return this week to get a chance to race their bikes on the track”, said Stone.
In addition to half price admission in the grandstands, we continue our Driver Appreciation Program on Friday with all competing Street Stock drivers getting in free of charge. Last week the Four Cylinders were the free admission class and 21 cars came out to compete at Penn Can in what was a fantastic race. The Street Stock feature was also outstanding with Ryan Codington, Matt Spencer and Shane Wolf, Jr. thrilling the fans with a three wide finish. With Street Stock drivers getting in free on Friday you can expect a great field of competitors.
Tell all of your friends to come out to Penn Can Speedway this Friday night for half price night. Let’s fill the stands and show the drivers that you appreciate the show that they put on for you each and every Friday night. Pit gates open at 5:00 p.m., grandstand gates at 5:30 p.m. and race time is 7:30 p.m.
Penn Can Speedway is located on Route 171 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. For more information check out our Facebook page or log onto penncan.com.

As part of our Driver Appreciation Program all Four Cylinder drivers that are competing this Friday night at Penn Can Speedway will be admitted free of charge. Each week we will honor one of our weekly divisions with free admission to the pit area. The promotion will run until each class has their night.

Susquehanna County Sherriff Lance Benedict will be on hand and will be bringing McGruff the Crime Dog with him. There will also be a special appearance by “Bike Man”. Race time is 7:30 p.m.
Last year a record 151 bicycles were given away to kids attending the races. The number as of Wednesday was just over 120 bikes and counting for Friday night as Race Director Gary Folk, Jr. and wife Fran have been busy lining them up. Folk came up with this idea several years ago and what started out with a few bikes has grown into an epic event thanks to all of their hard work.
Kids age 12 and under are always free at Penn Can so there is no admission charge for the kids. When they get to the track they will receive an entry blank. They simply need to fill it out and drop it in the designated box at the candy stand. There will be a box for boys, one for girls and a third box which is for a family pack of bikes.  The Family Pack will consist of two adult bikes as well as a bike for each of their children. In addition, Dobb’s Country Kitchen in Hallstead will be awarding a $50 gift certificate as part of the Family Pack.
Friday night is also Little League Night. All Little Leaguers will get in free and will be recognized during the night. In addition, the Susquehanna County Sherriff’s Department will be on hand to raise awareness for the DARE Program. Joining Susquehanna County Sherriff Lance Benedict will be McGruff the Crime Dog. They will also have giveaways.  Also making his debut on Friday night will be “Bike Man”.
The night will begin with a 12 woman choir singing the National Anthem as we pay tribute to our great country and kick off a huge night of racing. You won’t want to miss their stirring rendition of the anthem.
The Modifieds have yet to have a repeat winner in 2016. Kevin Hartnett, Dan Pompey and Joey Colsten have all come home victorious this year and the racing has been outstanding. Virtually every driver in the Modified division is capable of winning on any given night.
They will be joined by a full show of Crate Sportsman, Street Stocks, Crate Late Models, Factory Stocks and Four Cylinders. Pit gates will open at 5:00 p.m., grandstand gates at 5:30 p.m. and race time is 7:30 p.m. this Friday night.
