RANDY BROKAW TOPS SKYLINE SPORTSMAN
-Fleming’s IMCA Modified win streak at 12

Randy Brokaw earned his second triumph of 2014 as he drove to a convincing victory in the 25 lap Doug’s Trash Removal Open Sportsman feature event  at the Skyline Raceway last Saturday night.  Anthony Stockman  won his third 602 Sportsman division feature, while Chris Fleming continued to dominate the IMCA Modified division with his twelfth straight feature win.  Butch Green topped the Street Stock class in his return to weekly racing at Skyline with Grayson Albanese taking his first in the  IMCA Hobby Stock feature.   Rich Wagner won his third Four Cylinder Stock feature of the season.

Prior to the start of the Sportsman feature, the starting field was brought to the front stretch for a memorial to former driver Tom Collins Sr., who was laid to rest earlier in the day on Saturday after fighting a courageous battle against a fast moving cancer.  The Collins family came out to Skyline on Saturday night to support Tom’s son, Tom Collins Jr. who competes in the Sportsman division.  After a moment of silence and a nice tribute to Collins by assistant announcer Dick Stark, most of his fellow drivers offered words of encouragement to Collins before they strapped in.

The 25 lap Doug’s Trash Removal feature saw Randy Brokaw pick up the feature win, his second triumph of the 2014 season.  Lisa Williams, who earlier in the evening won her first ever heat race,  paced the field to the green flag and led the opening laps before Brokaw was able to slip past and take over the race lead.  Once out front, Brokaw was able to open up a lead over the battle for the runner-up position between point leader Nick Nye and Mark Weaver.  With those two locked in a battle for second, Brokaw was able to drive away, opening up a comfortable advantage.  Brokaw would lead all the way to the checkered flag to score the win.  Nye was finally able to work past Weaver late, but could not close the gap on Brokaw over the closing laps and settled for a strong runner-up finish.  Weaver finished third ahead of Jim LaRock and a returning Kevin Jordan, who finished fifth in his first start since the early part of the season.  Nice run for Tom Collins Jr. saw him drive from his 16th starting spot to finish seventh on a very emotional evening for himself and his family.

The 602 Sportsman division saw North Country standout Anthony Stockman park in victory lane for the third time in 2014.  Stockman came out on top of a spirited duel with Brandon Kuhn that saw the two spend several laps battling side by side for the lead.  Kuhn hung on to finish a strong second to stay very much in the Championship hunt while Randy Gates came home third.  Ben Wheeler and Coty Bishop completed the top five finishing order.

Despite the bounty placed on his head by track officials, Chris Fleming continued his dream season as he recorded his twelfth consecutive feature win.  Fleming snagged the lead for good on the sixth lap as he drove past early race leader Keith Lamphere to take over the race lead.  Once out front, Fleming was able to drive away from the field to score the win.  Behind him, the race was on for the runner-up position as Dan Searls made a run at Lamphere, but Keith was able to hold him off for the runner-up finish as Searls crossed the line third.  JJ Courcy drove the Van Tassel #76 from deep in the field to finish fourth with Bumps Scutt just nipping Will Ward at the line for fifth place.  The Bounty Hunters get one more shot this Saturday night as the bounty is paid out to the race winner as long as Fleming finishes the race on the lead lap.  With win #13, Fleming collects his own bounty.

Skyline Raceway’s 2013 Sportsman division champion Butch Green made his return to Skyline Raceway on Saturday night, racing in the Street Stock division for a week as his Sportsman car is currently being repaired from a hard crash at another speedway.  Green picked up the ride in the Jack Stanley owned Street Stock for the evening and promptly drove it to victory.  Green held off a late challenge from Kinser Hill to score the win with Hill second.  Dominic Fuller finished third over current point leader Tyrone Scott.  Toby Lehr completed the top five.

The 15 lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature saw a new face in victory lane as Grayson Albanese drove to his first win of the 2014 racing season.  Albanese got to the lead first and had to hold off a determined challenge from eight time winner Bill Flask to earn the win with Flask second.  Richie Hurlbert finished third over Tristan Kline and Randy Kelly.

Rich Wagner drove to his second consecutive feature win in the Four Cylinder Stock class.  Wagner had to hold off a strong challenge from Timmy Filkins, who was once again behind the wheel of Bobby Wagner’s #08.   Current point leader Eric Rowley finished third ahead of Jason O’Neill and Phil Burns.

Racing continues this Saturday night at the Skyline Raceway with another big six division racing show featuring the Doug’s Trash Removal Sportsman, 602 Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and Four Cylinder Stocks  The popular racing lawnmowers return this week to entertain the crowd during intermission. Racing gets underway at 6:30 PM with gates opening at 4:30.    For all the latest information, log onto www.skylineracewayny.com.
