Racing Discussion / Re: NASCAR Trucks
« on: February 25, 2017, 03:42:29 PM »
Am lucky enough to be in FL this week and chose New Smyrna over Daytona trucks last night.  Late Model race a parade but modifieds were excellent.....and FAST.  Glad I went.

There was also the ROC Oswego race in 2015 of Classic Week-end on Friday night where Andy Jankowiak pitted and then came from last to first.  I believe that performance helped him garner a nomination for the Ken Schrader racer of the year award.  He very nearly pulled it off again at the Lancaster US Open three weeks later.

Just got a call from a gentleman who arrived at Oswego at noon to park the camper.  He said they were in, everything was very, very nice and the hook-ups were done in their section.  A bit of confusion on directions but the people on duty were extremely patient and helpful.  Good job Oswego and SDW!

With the recent weather, I expect the grounds at Oswego to be dry if not already, then very soon.  The posts about muddy ground came after our wet week-end here.  Parking is going to be a bit inconvenient if we're looking for a free spot within walking distance.  There is a lot of parking at the shopping plaza across from the speedway but have heard the same rumors that it is paid parking, although not sure how they'll do that with the general shopping public.  The bowling alley just outside the track is offering paid parking.  It's also different to just visit someone in the campground........will need to have a ticket just to get past the camping gate.  I think it may have been like this in Syracuse also.  There are going to be a lot of people with a lot of questions and I'm guessing SDW employees are going to be a little stressed.  Hope all goes well.

The AIS shows were not a success and they did not run all four.  Not sure how many races they actually got in but car count was very low.  The western part of the state does much better and the PA tracks are pretty good.  I hear a lot of work is going into Cayuga in Ontario so perhaps something will get revived.  Used to be a great showpiece for Late Models there.

Racing Discussion / Re: Race Track Prices

One possible misconception here is that lower admission prices will actually "pack the track" as they say.  Oswego had a much larger crowd on June 18 at $20 general admission than they did for their May 21 $10 general admission special.  Evans Mills has had small crowds at $7 a person which I believe is the cheapest admission in the area.  I'm hearing Lancaster was packed last night for the ROC race.  Pretty sure it was $20 a person.

The entertainment goes on.

The fact is that BOTH the ROC and the NWMT series present some great racing in some of the most interesting and thrilling race cars we are fortunate to witness here in the Northeast.  The NWMT race scheduled for Oswego in September already has 32 entries with a few more expected.  It will be a great night of racing at the Steel Palace.  The ROC races presented at Lancaster are some of the best anywhere with side by side racing and multiple passes.  The ROC flagship event at Oswego and the US OPEN week-end at Lancaster are wonderful opportunities to see some great driving.  I would not hesitate to recommend any ROC or NWMT race to any race fan.  Anyone who makes such a sincere effort to debase one series over the other is probably not understanding the true nature of a race fan.

But it is entertaining, will have to admit that.

Best of luck to the Mills this year and their new owner Vern LaFave.  Vern will put together a great operation as soon as he gets the permits and other legal stuff lined up which always takes a bit of time.  The future was quite bleak at one point.......thanks Vern!

A wonderful time of announcing legends sharing many humorous and poignant memories along with great advice.  Well worth the trip down.  Thanks for posting this or otherwise I might have missed it.

AIS currently has no website administrator.  Please call one of the numbers on the website - probably Greg Smith - with any questions.

$62,500 is indeed the fee NASCAR charges to host a Whelan Modified Tour race, or at least that's what they were asking from Adirondack in 2015.  Of course it wasn't something AIS could take on at that time......if ever.  But the owners at Oswego have ways of making things happen and I am one who is greatly looking forward to Classic week-end in 2016, one of the truly great racing week-ends anywhere in the world!

Have fun at the track!  All the years we lived in Iowa and I never made it to Boone.  I always traveled to the Oswego Classic and had nothing left in the tank when I got home.  Now that we live in NY we'll probably make this trip sometime.  Have heard nothing but good about this place.

I agree that Oswego is mostly a one groove track.  Yet the fastest guys somehow find their way to the front.  I had the privilege at Lancaster of seeing Andy Jankowiak's first ever race in a Street Stock.  He spun out into the wall if I remember right.  Now he's the current top of the class at Oswego.  Andy himself in victory lane seemed a bit stunned at what he's accomplished.  He was scored as far back as 18th at one time.  Seeing him win made it a great night of racing.

All in all it was probably good for the ROC to move the Race of Champions.  Best of luck at Chemung and hopefully they can have some of the same drama (the good parts, anyway) that Oswego had Friday night with Andy.

I've been going to races at Lancaster on and off since 1968 and not sure I've ever seen two mods fly through turns 1 and 2 as close together as what Andy Jankowiak was doing nearly every lap as he worked his way back through the field after having to pit.  This track seems particularly well suited for modified racing and it was nice to see a big crowd.

Racing Discussion / Re: Super Stock Press Release

Well, there's one very positive thing I'm seeing in this thread........lots of readers and responses.  Some other RaceNy discussions about other classes barely draw a whimper.  Last year's special event Super Stock races at AIS were the most successful the track had.  Put 20-25 of these cars out there and you'll get a great race.  If these steps help that happen, than I think we're in for a good show.  See you at Lancaster!
