I race at canandaguia and I am having a problem with the motor dying out half way down the back straight. The front straight is fine. it seems like the cam gives up at 6500 the car does bot go over 6500 rpm. 1.76 power glide and 342 rear gears. the motor is a chevy 355.

could be a few things, jetting, timing, distributor, does it just stop pulling, like flatting out. could be valves are too tight, hard to say without further info.
-
fuel acts like spark and spark acts like fuel. first thing i would check is the float level. next a fuel pressure gauge in racing setting, even if it is a temp. set up for checking. no fuel, no go.
-
Yes motor just flattens out quits pulling. Only on back straight which is longer then the front
-
How old are valve springs?
-
I would start with what's the plugs look like, check the float level, you can change fuel pump, not sure on how big your track is, but Thunder Mountain is 3/8 and with 342's and 1.76 I turned 6200. Most of the time not much over 6000.

Track is a half mile. I had a stock pump in it. i just put a racing pump on it so i will see how it goes.
-
What chief said, check your plugs and float level first. What carb do you have on it?
-
The way you describe it sounds like you are right about the cam being a little small. Does it pull well up to the point it stops going?? Valve springs are another option. Maybe put on a set of bigger rockers and see how it does??? if going the rocker route BE SURE TO CHECK VALVE CLEARANCE WITH THE NEW ROCKERS.

If FrontierJoe is turning 6200 with those gears at thunder, I would put you at over 7 at your track. Put 308's in! Still having troubles send me a PM
-
would be nice for someone to answer what the problem turned out to be.If they got it figured out yet.
-
try 3.23 thats what we ran there
