Extremely wet track conditions forced Selinsgrove Speedway officials to cancel this weekend’s season opening events sanctioned by the Race of Champions Dirt Modified Tour.
The announcement was made at 6 p.m. this evening (Tuesday) following exhaustive efforts by the track crew to get the speedway’s half-mile clay surface ready for this weekend’s Friday and Saturday dual racing programs.
Speedway and Race of Champions officials are exploring options to reschedule the Icebreaker 40 for big block modifieds at the track this spring.
“Yesterday and today were critical to our timeline in preparing the speedway surface for this weekend’s racing,” said speedway publicity director Steve Inch. “Promoter Charlie Paige and his crew had equipment on the track all day. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to make much progress due to the saturated conditions, and it became apparent late this afternoon that we would not be able to provide a race track suitable and safe for racing this weekend.”
The adverse track conditions combined with the forecast for rain Wednesday and freezing temperatures Thursday prompted the early cancellation as a courtesy to fans and race teams who would be traveling from great distances for this marquee event.
Selinsgrove Speedway will host its annual motorsports show at the Susquehanna Valley Mall beginning this Sunday, March 16, and running through Friday, Mach 21.
The 410 sprint cars will make their first appearance of the season at the track at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, in a 25-lap feature paying $4,000 to win.
