Corbettsville, NY: Jack W. Romain, passed away peacefully at home with his family beside him on December 24, 2011 at the age of 90 after a 3 year battle with cancer. Jack graduated from Binghamton North High School in 1940. He retired as a cable splicing foreman in 1981 with 40 years of service with the NY Telephone Co. Jack was a WWII Army Veteran with the 243rd field artillery headquarters battery as a field wire chief. The 243rd was one of the only three 8 inch field artillery battalions in the war. Jack attended all of the reunions since 1975. He owned and built stock cars for several years with his son Ronnie. His car, #85, was top point car at Susquehanna Speedway in 1963. The track had to be renamed in 1964, so at the suggestion of Jack, it was renamed Penn-Can Speedway. The same year his car the #85 was the top point car. He also competed at all the other local tracks. In later years, Jack owned and rebuilt several antique cars. He could often be seen driving down the road in them on nice days. He also enjoyed gardening and gave much produce to family and friends. Jack bought his home in Corbettsville in 1946. Over the years many of the neighborhood children would come to his home to play baseball and in later years to swim. He was known to the neighborhood children as "Pop." Jack was predeceased by his wife Barbara, who also passed away on Christmas Eve, 41 years ago, a dear friend, Anne Burrows, and a sister, Pauline Cornelius. Jack is survived by his son Ronnie and wife Dawn; two grandsons, Jake and Neal; great grandchildren, Natasha, Mia, Kaden, Jjenna, and Allison; and two sisters, Lula Romain and Rose Dunlap. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 30, 2011 at the Tuttle-Yeisley Funeral Home, Hallstead, PA. Interment will be made in Stillwater Cemetery.
