Mother Nature Does Not Stop The Hill Speedway
« on: September 10, 2016, 10:30:06 AM »

Even though rain crossed through the area late in the afternoon.  Promoter Ed McKernan decided that he would attempt to get the racing program in on this past Friday night.  Lots of fans and cars made their way to the track all hoping to have some great racing.

The IMCA Style Mods were up first with eight teams all hoping they would bring home the checkered flag.  Missing for the action was Keith Jack Lamphere who was in Boone, Iowa competing a national event for the IMCA's.  After a couple of bad weeks the front row found Gary Lamphere bringing the field to the green with Victor McNeal along side.  Lamphere jumped into the lead and never looked back.  The race went caution free until lap sixteen when Nick Bruce spun.  That tightened up the field, but Gary held off a final challenge from Harry Ely and Jake Maynard.  Rounding out the top five were Victor McNeal and Brandon Smith.

Rear Wheel Drive 4 Cylinders made their way onto the track.  Mike Koser jumped into the early lead, last weeks feature winner Bryan Stone close behind.  These two battled side by side for many laps until lap nine when they spun together.  It sent both drivers to the rear of the field.  The restart found Alan Blackwell and Darin Horton pacing the field.  It was Horton who grabbed the lead and checked out on the field.  The battle for third and fourth was now back to Stone and Koser.  After the caution neither car seemed to have what was needed to get to the front.  When the checkered flag flew it was Darin Horton grabbing another win.  Alan Blackwell was second, Mike Koser third, Bryan Stone fourth and Mike Navone fifth.

Street Stocks were up next with Kevin Garland and Doug Stack Sr. bringing the class to the green.  Stack Sr., took command for the first two laps.  On lap three Tom Savercool stole the lead away on the restart and held on to win.  The feature event was marred by a few early cautions, but the remainder of the event was almost caution free.  The last caution came when Matt Jilson had a hard hit with the yuke tire in turn four.  Rounding out the top five were Doug Stack Jr., Dan Force, Chad Ely and Nick Robinson.

The Pure Stock division found Larry Lane and Ray Greene Jr, making up the front row.  The green fell and Lane lead the entire feature.  It has been a rough start for Larry as he was on his roof once and the yuke tires have not been his friend.  Tonight thou he was looking to bring it home to victory lane.  That is just what he did, with AJ Hunsinger, Ray Green Jr., Dustin Burdick and Cody Kershner following him across the line.

Front Wheel Drive 4 Cylinder was the final event of the night.  If you did not stay to watch his feature event, you certainly missed the best race of the night.  Donna Belcher and Tyler Belcher brought the field to the green.  Burt Maynard made a move to grab the early lead.  An early caution tightened up the field and the top three raced hard.  Nick Wesneski was trying everything he could to get around the Maynard 69.  Right behind him was the M1 of Matt McKernan who now was in the mix.  On lap eleven a caution came out when Dalton Maynard lost his left front tire.  That bunched up the field again and when the green fell it was Maynard and McKernan battling for the lead.
These two drivers raced side by side for the rest of the event.  McKernan did just what he had to do keeping Maynard in the second position.  Matt McKernan recorded his first feature win at The Hill. While all the fans got to see a race that was pure sportsmanship for both of these drivers.  Finishing in third was Nick Wesneski, fourth was Mike Ely, and fifth was Bob Schultz.
