Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY (way-y-y up north) has gone to an aftermarket body for their Tiger/Sportsman...look just like Late Models, a couple seconds slower on the 1/2 mile, usually around 20 of them. Airborne also runs big block dirt modifieds on a weekly basis, usually around 30 of them... 8 cylinder street stocks (Renegades, my old class...sniff, sob, cry) usually around 25, plus a couple of 4-cylinder classes. Rebanking and new paving a year or two ago is providing 2 or 3 legitimate racing grooves.

http://airborneparkspeedway.com/index.html

The ACT tour hits Airborne on the weekend of Sept. 11 and 12 for 300 (NOT a typo) laps of Late Model racing. The big block mods will be running 100 laps that weekend, support divisions also.

http://www.acttour.com/staticpages/index.php?page=actschedule

Airborne's sister track, ThunderRoad in Barre, VT runs Late Models and Tiger/Sportsman weekly on Thursdays...a great 1/4 mile high bank bullring that sits down in a bowl...not a bad seat in the house.... a couple hours and a ferry ride east of Plattsburgh... full fields (+/- 24) for all classes.

http://www.thunderroadspeedbowl.com/

Adirondack Speedway was running Late Models...but the track is closed this year...

Albany-Saratoga (newly paved this year) is running Sportsman (I'm assuming they look like Airborne's) and ProStocks in addition to the big block dirt mods. Their website shows  12 to 14 per class for the past couple weeks, 20 for the mods.

Enough said. Plus the high dollar shock packages. Late Models become obsolete so quickly. You can run a '00 troyer sst mod and be just as fast an '10 car. But with the Late Models you can only run 3 to 5 years at most with the same car. Lots of updating and $$. Sucks, id take a good LM race over anyother class. JMO

There are no LM's left in NY. Lake Erie 16 weekly. I hear Holland has even changed their Bud 100 to Pro Mods lol.

The 604's will be a memory in a couple years at Erie and SHANG 2 counts are terrible. Stick a fork in em. Oh yeah stick a fork in the Sportsman Mods too. They already are declining. GREED KILLS

The sportsman class at Albany-Saratoga is a DIRT style sportsman mod class.

The "Late Models" at Thunder Road are ACT crate models with the ZZ4 ('603/'609) and an equivalent Ford crate.  This is I believe a 355hp crate, not even a '604.

I think Lake Erie will be growing in the future!  We are at an all time low for cars right now.. 16!!!! We had 29 for the Lake Erie 150.. Name one class or series in the North East that has had 29 cars all year. 6 out of 8 races have been won by different drivers. Everyone that comes visits us has been impressed with  the racing.

The Grandstands have been pack every week.. In our drivers meeting a couple weeks ago, mangement told us that they have a plan for the next two years.. They want to slowly raise the purse. Their goal is to pay $2,000 to win and raise the intire purse all the way back weekly for us. They can only do that if they keep filling the stands.  Kudos to  the track.  It is weird right?! A track wanting to pay more money to get more cars?! A track that has been giving away free tickets and lowered front gate ticket prices to get people in the stands.

IMO the modifieds killed themselves and the SSTs are doing a pretty good job at it right now. Late models are dead in NY cause we can't afford to race for peanuts. They are alot more sophisticated now than they have been in the last 10 years. It also does not help that every track wants to have their own set of rules, but thats fine.   604s did not kill the class they helped in the long run.  Id rather spend $5500 on a motor and put the rest of my money into setup to make for great racing.

Wait till the first guy who figures out that a 604 will dominate the Sportsman class at holland and Spencer. It took Mike Fiebs and Will Thomas to show the late models and now every driver loves the motor.  Did we hate putting our $12000 built motor on the shelf? Yes!(and $12000 is cheap compared to what i hear that has been spent now) But in the long run, cars are faster, better handling and put on a better show.

Their secret is that they are both touring series, constantly on the prowl, searching out the hungry, drooling mass of Late Model starved humanity, their full fender feeding frenzy rising higher and higher, cresting in a tumultuous roar... faster... almost there... more... FASTER... yes... yessss... YESSSSSSSSS... checkers.

Was it good for you?

LM becomes out dated in 3 years to 5 years?  Did I miss some thing. Our Late Model is as plan-jane as they come. The guy who built  our car use to built and race the same style frame for tons of P.A.S.S. North races. Our car drives great, handles fantastic. It has a locally made frame. Runs on PRO SHOCKS and coil over springs, Same Tanny we ran in our Modified and is way less than 1/2 the price were spent on our Modified. So the idea you need to spend big bucks to have a LM and run some way out gear is out of this world. OUR CAR WAS BUILT NEW in 2007. Now that we have worked with it a couple years we have found what makes it work the best.  And it is for sale as we speak.....

Part if the trouble in the Southern Tier and at Shangri-la II is that the Late Models have been down for so long it will take a while to build the class back up if given the chance. We will be there in the next week or two at the most with a new car we are putting the finishing touches on now and have another in the works. But there are also a lot of good cars out there sitting not running which everyone needs to figure out how to bring back out to race. Bigger purses help but tracks are in a catch 22, its tough to raise a purse if they are getting the cars already.

23 cars started the 100 lap late model feature at Motordrome on Friday 8/6. Looking at the car counts at all the weekly tracks it doesn't appear the SST/Pro Mod/Sportsman are doing any better than the late models on a weekly basis. The local tracks look to be averaging around 12-15 cars a week in that division. Asphalt racing appears to be hurting across the board. This economy isn't helping anyone and it appears some of the owners/promoters are now reaping what they have sown over the past few years. If something doesn't change soon the only weekly asphalt racing left will be street stocks and 4 cylinders.
