55th ANNUAL HEATH MEMORIAL THIS SATURDAY PAYS TRIBUTE TO FIVE MILE POINT FOUNDERS

Five Mile Point Speedway will pay homage to its heritage this Saturday night with the running of the 55th Annual Heath Memorial. The tribute to track founders Irv and Anna Heath will be highlighted by a 55 lap feature for the Sunoco Modifieds, paying $2,055 to win. Many drivers from the past will assemble for the annual Racer?s Reunion on Saturday night. Race time is 6:00 p.m.
Five Mile Point, celebrating 69 consecutive years of racing, was founded by Irv and Anna Heath, the Great Grandparents of current Promoters Tyler, Tanner and Tucker Harpell. Mr. Heath passed away in 1965 and the first Memorial race took place that year with DeForest Chalker taking the set of checkers over Jerry Hayes and Pete Cordes.
Anna kept the speedway alive and running in Irv?s absence, leasing the speedway to Promoters that included her Grandson?s Dan and Andrew Harpell. Anna was always at the track and throughout the 1990?s could usually be found working in the T-Shirt booth with her daughter Pat. Mrs. Heath passed away in 2004 and at that time the Irv Heath Memorial became the Heath Memorial in honor of both founders.
Over the years the greatest drivers in the history of the speedway have marked their calendars for the Heath Memorial as it is unquestionably the most prestigious event at the speedway. Through the years one driver has stood out on this night and that?s Chuck Akulis. The winningest Modified driver in track history with 107 victories and 14 track championships, is a seven ?plus? time winner of the Heath Memorial. He won the race outright seven times. In 1980 Twin 30?s were held, commemorating the tracks 30th anniversary, and Akulis, with his second and third place finishes, was the overall winner. Akulis will be in attendance for the Racer?s Reunion on Saturday night.
Six other drivers have experienced multiple Heath Memorial victories. Mike Colsten is a four time winner. Stewart Friesen and Dave Kneisel are three time winners. Carl Nagel, Mitch Gibbs and Tyler Siri have each claimed two Heath Memorials.
Who will add their name to the prestigious list of winners on Saturday night? Defending Track Champion Brian Malcolm is currently leading the points and has multiple feature wins this year. Scott Landers came out of a long retirement this year and is currently second in points. Landers, with his permission, will carry the number 3J on his car this Saturday in honor of his childhood hero Chuck Akulis. Could we see the 3J back in victory lane for the Heath Memorial one more time? Come out this Saturday to find out.
Joining the Sunoco Modifieds will be the Insinger Performance Crate Sportsman, Factory Stocks, the 600cc Modifieds, Belgray Oil Four Cylinders and a special appearance by the Midstate Antique Stock Car Club. One of the highlights of the night is the annual Racer?s Reunion where drivers from the past, along with current drivers that have been racing for many years at the speedway, will be introduced to the crowd.
The night will be sponsored by Binghamton Truck and Tire Center. It will be a big night for BTTC owner Scott Landers as he will not only be sponsoring the night, but also competing in the Heath Memorial. BTTC is located on Conklin Road in Binghamton and can handle all of your big truck, farm and agricultural and heavy equipment tire needs.
Racing will begin at 6:00 p.m. this Saturday night, one hour earlier than normal. Pit gates will open at 3:00 p.m. and grandstand gates at 4:00 p.m. Five Mile Point Speedway is located on Francis Street in Kirkwood, New York.
