Racing Discussion / And now, some shameless self-promotion...
« on: March 26, 2020, 03:19:43 PM »
Hey everyone...what started two weeks ago as an idea has blossomed...I'm now doing a weekly FB Live show called (surprise) "Cowboy's Racing Roundup".  I'm spending an hour each week going over news, doing some interviews, and taking questions via the chat during the FB Live broadcast.

This started on my personal page, but it's now moving to one of my radio station's FB pages (the link is posted below).

Had DTD's own Mike Mallett as a guest last week (thanks Mike!) and have a guest already lined up for this week's show with a good story to tell.

Check it out Tuesday night from 8pm to 9pm...here's the link:

Thanks!

A big ask IMO...while it may break it away from the NFL/NCAA, it would put them against the NHL/NBA...it's a saturated sports market...and while it's not technically a 'sport', pro wrestling now features in prime time on cable and over the air networks on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday...and there's some serious audience share between the two.

One would also have to consider the logistics...many over the wall pit crew guys have regular jobs and it's far easier for them to get to the track over a weekend vs. midweek.

I'd say cut the distances, the number of races, and wrap it up by mid to end of September.  I also don't think the 'doubleheader' weekend concept will work at all, IndyCar tried it and dropped it like a hot potato on bare hands...and while previous generations of Cup drivers could easily handle 2-4 races a week, the newer more coddled generation of driver will whine and moan loud and long.

I think social media is an important tool that, if utilized effectively and with a proper strategic plan, can pay positive dividends.  Unfortunately, you can't control it completely.

I can forsee special event schedules for Holland/Lancaster as being the chosen route and would hope that the same would continue for Spencer...I really enjoyed working the shows that I did there, the atmosphere and racing were fantastic!

I think we've reached a 'shakeout' period where only a handful of operations can succeed with an old-school style weekly program...

Regardless of schedule, diversifying your platform is essential...that means doing motorsports-related things (like crash a rama style events, monster trucks, etc) as well as things that, while not necessarily competitive-based, will draw new audiences to a venue where they can be exposed to the racing elements in an attempt to cross over customers.

Racing Discussion / Freedom features moved to Saturday afternoon
« on: September 06, 2019, 11:17:10 PM »
Due to an area power outage, the remainder of Friday night's program could not be completed.  We apologize for the situation.  The remaining features from the Friday night of Fall Classic weekend will be completed Saturday, September 7th at 2:00 p.m.  Tickets and pit wristbands from Friday night WILL be honored for admission for the remaining features.  The pits and grandstands will then be cleared, and Saturday's evening program will race as scheduled.

Racing Discussion / Skyline Raceway July 14th-karts and more
« on: July 08, 2019, 09:52:41 AM »
Sunday, July 14th
Skyline Raceway LLC-Blodgett Mills, NY (south of Cortland)
1/10 mile paperclip flat clay oval

KARTS:
Clone Light/Heavy/Super Heavy, Rookie Red, JR1, JR2, JR3 (Starlite Speedway rules and weights)

MICRODS, MOWERS, SLINGSHOTS (Junior & All Star)
HURRICANES (per Starlite Speedway rules)

Registration Opens at 9am
Hot Laps at 11am racing to follow

For details please call (607) 657-8222

For those of you who may have run a previous event at Skyline (and for those that haven't), the track is back in the hands of the original owners, the Payne family. The previous kart track was wiped out and a new track constructed that sits entirely in the infield of the 3/8 mile stock car track (they do not share a common frontstretch). This is their first attempt at doing this type of event, but they have some experienced people helping them get going. It's not a series-type environment...it's not high paying...but if you're looking for a new track to try where you can enjoy racing without a lot of stress and pressure, this would be the place!

You can find the track easily via Google maps or GPS or search for 'Skyline Raceway LLC' on Facebook.

Believe it or not, last Friday was the first show I've worked at Spencer in a 33-year career and I really enjoyed it!  Dave and I have worked together before and had a blast...I'll be back to sit in with Joe Marotta on the 28th, looking forward to it!

Seems from a travel standpoint it would have been better to put the spring Texas race after ISM and then go to Atlanta/Miami/Bristol.

Charlotte/Kansas/Michigan/Sonoma could have been routed a bit better as well.

Anybody can complain, gripe, fume, or vent.

Some can make constructive arguments with well thought out points.

Some can listen and engage in intelligent conversation.

It all means nothing if no actions are taken.

So I ask, where do you fall among the above?

Racing Discussion / Re: He's Got a Ticket to Ride... Maybe...
« on: October 31, 2018, 04:03:35 PM »
Debating whether it was right/wrong seems to be irrelevant, because NASCAR has the final say and said/did nothing.  Not sportsmanlike for sure, though, especially if you live by the 'race how you want to be raced' mantra.  Not much honor among racers at the Cup level nowadays.

Dale drove people dirty, but for some reason (maybe charisma, maybe the historically rose colored glasses) we were willing to accept it more from him and far less from today's crop of drivers who whine better than their engines do.
