Racing Discussion / Danica Patrick set to announce plan to run NASCAR
« on: December 07, 2009, 10:16:32 PM »
AP source: Patrick reaches NASCAR deal
By JENNA FRYER, AP Auto Racing Write

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—A person familiar with the plan says Danica Patrick has reached a deal to enter NASCAR with JR Motorsports.

Patrick will announce a partial Nationwide Series schedule at a Tuesday news conference in Phoenix, the person familiar with her plans tells The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because she has not officially announced her intentions.

Last week Patrick signed a three-year contract extension with Andretti Autosport to stay in the IndyCar series, but its schedule gives her enough time to also try NASCAR.

It’s not clear yet how many races she will drive in NASCAR’s second-tier series for team owners Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Rick Hendrick.

GoDaddy.com will sponsor Patrick in both IndyCar and NASCAR.

Keene, NH (December 6, 2009) --  Modified Racing Series president Jack Bateman disclosed Sunday, Airborne Speedway, Plattsburgh, NY., has been added to the 2010 schedule creating an exciting two day event on Memorial Day weekend, traditionally a big motorsports celebration across the country. Additionally, Bateman announced one more race is expected to be added to the schedule in two weeks. That event will take place September 10, at a track to be named. The two new additions will bring the total to 20 races for the new campaign.

The announcement was made at the first winter meeting for competitors and officials at the Keene Country Club, Keene, NH.

The Airborne date, Saturday, May 29, 2010, will be the first of two race events on the holiday weekend. The series is also scheduled at Thunder Road International Speedbowl, Barre, VT., on Sunday May 30.  The Plattsburg race will be the MRS first ever appearance there, and the second race scheduled in the State of New York next season. Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Malta, NY, will host the modified tour in April, 2010.

“We’ve been working on Airborne for three years now, it’s nice that we were able to put it together,” said Bateman. “We could not have done it without the cooperation of Thunder Road and Tom Curley. I am pleased with the support they have given us for this special two-day event.” the series founder added,

Bateman is enthusiastic for the new season. “We could have had more shows, four or five other tracks wanted races, but you have to draw the line.”  The schedule is receiving a lot of interest from both fans and competitors.

Mark J. Hann, president and CEO of Victory Motorsports Marketing Services LLC, addressed those in attendance explaining his new position with the series. Hann, who came on board during the 2009 season,  told the gathering he is presently seeking a title sponsor for the 2010 season.

Hann along with Bateman and race director John Hoyt, recently attended the International Motorsports Industry Show, Indianapolis, IN., gaining a lot of exposure for the series. Hann told the audience that many racing industry manufacturers were fully aware of the MRS and what the series has accomplished. Many indicated they would like to become involved.

Hann explained a total of 24 companies will be involved with the series next year. Those businesses will provide support programs including product, point fund, and banquet contingencies, for the series racers.

Bateman feels the time spent at Indianapolis was beneficial in many ways. “I was amazed how receptive these companies were to our series. The key is we established a lot of new contacts and opened some doors.”

Race director Hoyt echoed Bateman’s comments. “The pulse these companies have on our series is impressive. These are quality names that will have a snowball effect. We are not just looking at next year, we are looking beyond.” he said.

Bateman also told the gathering that a “spec” gas will be provided by series sponsor, New England Race Fuels and Sunoco Race Fuels. Bateman added, “It is something we feel a need to go too for a number of reasons and certainly cost in the biggest concern.” Bateman furthered, “Sunoco will provide a fuel truck at each race event and will also again be involved in our contingency program. John Holland has been a strong supporter of this series and we are grateful for his support.”

MRS officials will schedule another meeting for competitors in late February.

Racing Discussion / 2010 Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Schedule

Re:  Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Schedule

Ten Race Series In Place For 2010 Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Modified Tour.  New Facilities Will Highlight the 2010 RoC Tour Schedule.

BINGHAMTON, NY…The 2010 Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Modified Tour Schedule is ready to go with plenty of excitement for both race teams and spectators that follow the RoC Tour.  All of the 2010 excitement will get underway on Sunday, April 18th with a first time visit to the Albany Saratoga Speedway for a 100 lap showdown with the Modified Racing Series.  Ten dates have been confirmed for the upcoming race season with possible additions pending.

The first event on the schedule will take place at the historic Albany Saratoga Speedway in Malta, NY.  The popular speedway ran as a pavement facility for years with a rich Modified history.  In recent times the speedway was operated as a dirt track.  Speedway owner Bruce Richards announced this fall that the track would return to its asphalt roots.  Since that time new pavement has been laid down and the speedway will open its new era with the Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Modified Tour and the Modified Racing Series going head to head in a 100 lap special on Sunday, April 18th.  An open practice will be held for the teams on Saturday, April 17th.  The two tours will work together to make the show a success for the asphalt Modified division and for the Albany Saratoga Speedway.  RoC Tour drivers in attendance will all receive 100 show up points at that day with no other point distribution.  This was put in place so that no team would be adversely affected if they did not qualify.  The last asphalt Modified Track Champion at the speedway was Richie Evans.

The RoC tour will swing to the newly built Shangri-La2 Speedway in Tioga Center, NY on Sunday May 16th for the first of two events at the fantastic facility.  The other event will be a 100 lap special held on Sunday, August 1st, currently the first of four Championship events on the tour schedule.  RoC Tour Administrator Andrew Harpell commented, “They built a first class facility at Shangri-La2 and we are excited to the have the opportunity to compete there.”  “The effort that was put behind the construction of the facility is simply amazing,” he added.

Oswego Speedway, the home of the Race of Champions Weekend will host two dates with the annual Richie Evans Memorial event slated for Saturday, May 29th and the Race of Champions Weekend scheduled for Sept. 24th and 25th.  This years RoC 200 will be the 60th running of the event with a few exciting announcements coming in the near future.

The staff at Spencer Speedway has certainly added even more excitement to their 2010 RoC tour dates with the fall repaving of the facility.  The popular Rochester area oval is always a favorite stop for the RoC tour and the 2010 dates are sure to be circled on all the team’s calendars.  Spencer Speedway will host the tour on Friday, June 18th and Friday, September 3rd.

The Dunn Tire Raceway Park in the outskirts of Buffalo, NY will again host two RoC events in 2010.  There first will take place as part of the western, New York swing the day after Spencer Speedway on Saturday, Jun 19th.  The annual “U.S. Open” is tentatively scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 18th and Sunday, September 19th.

One of the most popular venues on the RoC tour is always the “Bull Ring” at Wyoming County International Speedway.  The traditional 75 lap event is always filled with excitement and usually comes down to the very final lap of the event to determine the outcome.  Once again the speedway will host a 75 lapper on Friday, July 9th.

The RoC Championship Trail will ultimately decide the outcome of the 2010 tour title.  Those four races will take place on Sunday, August 1st at the Shangri La 2 Speedway, Friday, September 3rd at the Spencer Speedway, Sunday, Sept. 19th at the Dunn Tire Raceway Park with the finale taking place on Saturday, September 25th with the 60th running of the Race of Champions 200 at Oswego.

Three time RoC Tour Champion and two-time defending Champion Matt Hirschman is excited about the 2010 tour.  “It is always nice to travel to new facilities and this year’s schedule has accomplished that,” stated Hirschman.  He added, “The RoC tour is so competitive and this year will be even more difficult with the new and upgraded facilities that I have yet to race on – we look forward to the challenge.”

The 2010 Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Modified Tour schedule will certainly provide Modified teams and fans some of the best racing and venues in the northeast.  With new facilities and upgraded facilities combined with familiar historic sites the tour will offer a complete menu of racing in 2010.

Additional dates are pending in the weeks to come.  For additional information please contact the Race of Champions offices at 607-775-5555 or email rocpavement@aol.com.  The official website can be found at www.raceofchampions.net

NYSSCA HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED

Clifton Park, NY          Dirt track ace Mike Romano, two-time NASCAR national modified champion Jimmy Spencer, two-surface star Charlie Rudolph and highly respected car owner Jerry Higbie Sr. have been elected to the New York State Stock Car Association’s Hall of Fame for induction in January, 2010.
A three-time Fonda Speedway big block modified champion with 48 wins, placing him behind only Jack Johnson, Lou Lazzaro, Dave Lape, Kenny Shoemaker and Pete Corey in career statistics, Romano was also a very successful small block racer at Fonda, claiming 21 wins and two championships in the 320 division and another five wins and a title with the 358’s.
He was also a star on the road, recording numerous wins on the Fulton/Utica-Rome “outlaw” circuit and claiming the 1995 big block titles at both Drummondville and Granby, Quebec.  All told, Romano had recorded some 77 big block and 33 small block wins before a premature retirement precipitated by ongoing health problems.  He remains active in the sport, operating a speed shop business and promoting the Glen Ridge Speedway with partner Jake Spraker.
A native of Berwick, PA. and son of dirt LM star Ed Spencer, Jimmy Spencer first displayed his asphalt prowess at New York’s super-fast Shangri-La Speedway in the family crewed #24 modified, claiming some two dozen wins and the 1983 track title running against such stellar competition as George Kent and Richie Evans.  Known even then as “Mr. Excitement,” he also won the 1987 Busch North race at Shangri-La driving for owner Frank Cicci and the 1983 Race of Champions at Pocono.
Fifteen NASCAR modified tour wins and the 1986 and ’87 national championships followed, after which Spencer went on to the national Busch series, where he recorded 12 wins, and Winston Cup competition, where he scored popular superspeedway wins at Daytona and Talladega.
Always in the middle of the action on the track, Spencer brings an equally exciting presence to his TV work for Speed, where he continues to entertain race fans from coast to coast with insightful analysis of Sprint Cup happenings.
A second generation star like Spencer, Rudolph was equally adept on asphalt and dirt, claiming Lancaster Speedway championships in 1980, ’92 and ’93 to go with a pair of Ransomville titles and the 1986 championships at Cayuga County and Rolling Wheels Raceway.   The highlight of his DIRT involvement was winning the ’86 MR DIRT title but he was also a two-time winner of the Mohawk Valley 200 at Fonda, claimed some 17 Canandaigua wins and was second to Jimmy Horton at Syracuse in 1987.
After recording 49 DIRT big block wins, Rudolph, an engineer by trade, changed directions once again, qualifying for four Winston Cup events after bringing Sunoco into the sport for the first time.  After retiring as a driver, he was crewchief for modified star Chuck Hossfeld and in recent years has supported son Erik’s career.  The high school senior, now one of NASCAR’s top modified drivers, has also had success on the DIRT circuit, winning the 2008 Sportsman race at Syracuse.
Higbie began his career as a driver in the mid-1960’s but soon found his niche as an owner along with his brother, Gary.  Together they fielded cars at Accord, Orange County and Nazareth, winning first in the Sportsman ranks and then in the big blocks with such talent as Bobby Bottcher, Rich Ricci Sr., Bruce Quinn, Larry Brolsma, Jeff Heotzler, Steve Bottcher, Frank Cozze, Rich Ricci Jr and Eddie Marshall at the wheel.
With his brother’s retirement from the sport, Jerry turned his attention to the career of his son, Jerry Jr., who has become one of the area’s most successful pilots, winning track titles at Accord and Orange County as well as running very competitively at Syracuse.  Higbie, always a gentleman, became a Hall of Fame owner by giving talented drivers the opportunity to reach their potential and become consistent winners, in the process making the sport stronger.
The new Hall of Fame members will be inducted at the NYSSCA banquet on Saturday night, January 23rd at the Polish American Club in Albany, NY, with a ceremony Sunday morning at 11 am at the Saratoga Automobile Museum, site of the association’s permanent Hall of Fame display.  The event will feature extensive remarks by the inductees as well as a question and answer session involving the audience.
The New York State Stock Car Association membership includes racers at all levels, media members, officials, industry representatives and fans dedicated to improving the sport at the short track level.  The group is nationally known for its benefit plan dedicated to aiding members who are out of work due to racing related injuries.

DELANGE RACING PLAYS ANOTHER WINNING HAND

Last Saturday the DeLange Racing squad returned to Pennsylvania to compete at one of their favorite tracks, Mahoning Valley Speedway in Lehighton, for another round of the Modified 100 Poker Tournament. On the schedule were the remaining 67 laps of Hand Three held over from July 25, followed by the full game of Hand Four. Eric Beers was looking forward to a successful performance and lived up to expectations, winning Hand Three and finishing third in Hand Four. It proved to be a night to remember for the citizens of Mud Lane in nearby Northampton as Beers’ neighbor, Matt Hirschman, raked in the winner’s bonanza in Hand Four.

Team owner Dave DeLange was delighted with his team’s accomplishments. “Overall, we had a super Saturday night. We were very strong in both main events. In the first feature Eric fought hard to beat John Bennett, patiently sizing up his opponent and then taking advantage of a slight bobble to end up in Victory Lane. In the second feature the #45 Modified was not handling up to par in the early going, but we pitted and some small adjustments by the crew fixed the problem and Eric went back on the attack. We were on course for another win but just ran out of laps. Still, it was a happy return trip home to New York.”

This weekend the DeLange crew returns to the Keystone State to compete in the King of the Mountain Modified 150 at Sundance Vacations Speedway in St John’s. The legendary third-mile oval has been known by several names over the years, but has been good to Beers no matter what title was used. He was the Rookie of the Year in 1993, the track champion in 1994, and won this legendary event in 2004. Eric hopes to carry his history of success over to his new team. His car owner is equally anxious to return to the track.

“I’ve been looking forward to this race since we put together our team schedule in the spring,” Dave states. “It’s one of the classic contests in Pennsylvania Modified racing. I liked the track from my first visit back in May and have been waiting for our return ever since. I think we’re prepared for success in one of the most notable events in Modified racing. I can’t wait for Sunday.”

Let’s go racing!

DELANGE RACING LOOKING AHEAD TO A BIG FINISH

The month of September is always important to Modified racers in the Northeast. Two of the biggest events of the year are annually on the schedule; the Race of Champions at Oswego Speedway and the US Open at Dunn Tire Raceway Park. At DeLange Racing hopes were high for a pair of high-quality finishes, but unfortunately unexpected problems with the #45 Modified sidetracked our plans to meet in Victory Lane. But the team is using the disappointment to drive them to a strong rebound in the remaining battles we have planned.

After taking this week off, Eric Beers and the crew will be on the road traveling to his home state of Pennsylvania three times in October. On October 3 we will be at one of our favorite tracks, Mahoning Valley Speedway, to complete the remaining laps in Hand Three of the Modified 100 Poker Tournament that was interrupted by rain on July 25. Also on that date Hand Four will be played out. The following Sunday it’s another trip south down Interstate 81 to Sundance Vacations Speedway in St. John’s, Pennsylvania, for the 10th Annual King of the Mountain 100-lap race. Then the month will end with a final journey to Lehighton in the Keystone State for the final Poker Hand to crown the champion.

“Obviously we were disappointed with how things turned out at both Oswego and Dunn Tire Raceway Park,” states Dave DeLange. “But these were mechanical failures that were beyond our control. Our crew does an outstanding job preparing a car capable of winning at each race, but you can’t predict when a part is going to fail. No one on this team is going to give up as long as we’re still racing. We still have four weekends left on our 2009 schedule and we’re fully capable of winning each race.”

The driver is in full agreement with the words of his car owner. “We’ve still got a lot of racing left on our 2009 calendar,” says Eric. “I’m not ready to stop yet. I’ve only won one race this year. My goal coming into the season was to win at least five races and we’ve still got about seven left on our schedule, so I can still accomplish my goal. I intend to make that happen.”

Deal the cards; we’ve got the winning hand!

$20,000 REWARD OFFERED BY FOUR STAR MOTORSPORTS OWNER and SPONSOR

STONY POINT, NY (September 23, 2009) –  Vinnie Salerno, owner of Four Star Transmissions Motorsports, formally announced today a reward of $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the weekend theft of the contents of the Four Star truck and hauler.

The theft, which took place from the parking lot of the Motel Blanchette at 225 Blvd. St. Joseph West, Drummondville, Quebec, Canada, on Saturday, September 19, 2009 included the following items:
•   complete big block Modified car
•   complete small block Modified car
•   60 Keizer wheels mounted with Hoosier tires
•   several unmounted Keizer wheels
•   black Snap On Tool wheeled tool box with all hand tools
•   One Off pit cart
•   impact wrenches
•   Storms’ helmet and Hans device
•   two complete Quick Change rear ends
•   five carburetors
•   bottle of Nitro Oxygen
•   lead weights
•   Four Star Motorsports set up books
•   RACEceiver  and Transponder systems
•   transmissions
•   30 shocks
•   front end unit
•   entire contents of all hauler cabinets (i.e. nuts, bolts, etc.)
•   Storms’ apparel items (including tee shirts for sale)

Motel security cameras show the Four Star truck and hauler being driven out of the motel at 5:19 a.m. on Saturday, September 19 by a heavy set male with light or grey hair and a companion.  The truck and hauler were found abandoned in a rural hunting area approximately 30 minutes from the motel.  The vehicle, which had become stuck on the dirt road, was empty of its entire contents except for several jugs of racing fuel.

No insurance was carried on the trailer contents which means the team will have to replace all items, from complete cars to spare nuts and bolts, with no outside source of funding.

Salerno has an extensive inventory of the contents and indicates all items, including hand tools, were marked with the team name making it difficult for the thieves to resell them.

The $20,000 reward is being offered by the Salerno family and team sponsor Don Kruger.  They are asking the members of the racing community to be alert and report anything they might see at upcoming race flea markets, on the internet, or on used car parts they might be purchasing.

Anyone with information, no matter how small the detail, is asked to called Vinnie Salerno at 845-786-2200 or 845-591-7254.  All information will be investigated.  The team is hopeful a piece of information learned will lead to an arrest and conviction.
