Hey Moselli, I was at that race at Shangri-La too.  I know that Benny Stephens was one of the guys on the front row in the Norton 3x.  I can't remember the other guy on the front row, nor can I recall who won.  Who cared at the time?  10 laps of 100% all-out side-by-side racing from the whole field in a heat.  It was great stuff.

Back then, Shangri-La would group the heats by handicap.  The low handicap cars were in the first heat, the middle in the second and the high handicap in the third.  The third heat was a killer every week, and 1 or 2 big dogs went to the consi every Saturday night.  If you were an outsider, you started last in the third heat behind the absolute best in the business.

I have fond memories of 1978, the year that my Dad became a regular in the third heat.  NASCAR came in the next year with the standard staggered heat handicapping.  Up until then, the heats at Shangri-La were well worth the price of admission.

Manipulating the outcome of the race with a contrived caution, eh?  Don't we see that every week?  Didn't we see it when a certain Chase contender got to the lucky dog spot on Saturday night?  Will NASCAR fine and suspend itself?  Nothing against Newman getting in, because he did drive the wheels off that thing and had earned the win. And I never want those bozos at MWR in charge of national security.  I just find it amusing that the lords of the debris caution bring the hammer down on anyone for manipulating the outcome of the race.

He also gave Keselowski 3 spots in the final finishing order, and 3 more points over the 48.  Wonder how that will play in the Monday morning team meeting at Hendrick Motorsports.

Just wondering - when did they run the IMCA and Mod Lite features on Saturday?  Before or after the 200?

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Diffendorf family.  Diff was a racer's racer.  Asphalt, dirt, modified, supermod - he could do it all, and did it very, very well.  And a good guy too. We will miss him.

And Gary is right - there were few things better in racing than the third heat at the old Shangri-La.

Would have been our team's first race there since '78.  Hopefully they reschedule the Mod Lites.

Man, that happened in a hurry and with not a lot of contact.  Glad Otto is okay.

By the way, sbs23, congratulations on your Mr. SBS win.  Great job Barry!

argonrcn - When Allen Clark was looking for pictures of his Dad, he was looking for Al Clark, who drove the #48 and #74 modifieds back in the day.  I sure did appreciate the pictures of my Dad though.  That's Randy Hedger working on the right front of the coupe.  Thanks for all the great stuff you've been posting.
