(WOODHULL, NY) – Brady Fultz came into Saturday night's action at Woodhull Raceway with a bad taste in his mouth. The night before at Outlaw Speedway, Fultz lost a power steering pump and dashed a run that his team felt could have ended in Outlaw Victory Lane.
With a new power steering pump and a great redraw for the feature event, Fultz would not let a win slip away on Saturday night. Fultz used a lap nine restart to power around the outside of Russell Morseman to take the lead. Once out in front, Fultz would get a brief challenge from Donnie Lawson and Billy Van Pelt.
But as the race wore on with a green flag run to end the race, Fultz had begun to pull away and score the win. Lawson raced his way forward as far as second over Van Pelt who charged from twelfth. Eric Fisher and Dillon Groover rounded out the top five finishers.
"I’ve been trying to watch what the track does,” said Fultz. “That’s made a difference on tire selection and we’ve done some different things on set up which is also working.”
The NAPA Crate Sportsman feature event saw Chris Daugherty pick up his fifth overall win of the season on Saturday night. Daugherty was fast to close out the event, but Brandon Martin looked to be the class of the field off the drop of the initial green flag. Martin, in the No. 43 Teo out of Woodhull, was charging after Daugherty for the lead and getting faster as the laps wore on and he built heat into his tires.
The cautions would fall at the right time for Daugherty though, and the tail end of the race saw a long green flag run where Daugherty stretched out the lead and ran away to his fifth win of the year. Butler, Martin, Stacy Jackson and David Mayo would complete the top five finishers.
Carl Hughes was just one lap shy of picking up his first win of 2016 and first win in a while, behind the wheel of his No. 2D 360 Late Model. Hughes led the first nineteen laps of the SWL Awards Late Model feature event, but a late-race tangle with a lap car was the difference.
Hughes came up on the back half of the field to put them a lap down. As he approached the No. 14 of Rick Loucks, Hughes went to the bottom lane to try and get by. What Hughes didn't know is Loucks was also headed for the bottom lane. The two made contact and at the same time, Glenn Whritenour had a full head of steam on the outside to power by for the lead with the white flag in the air.
Loucks would spin to a stop in turn one, allowing Hughes one last shot at getting by Whritenour for the win. But setting up a pass and making a pass on the multi-time champion were two different things. Hughes could not make a move and Whritenour would race on to the win over Hughes, Bruce Miller, Kurt Stebbins and Jason McGregor.
Teddy Morseman's niece waved the green flag on the Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stock twenty-lap feature event and Morseman would dominate to win the twenty-lap affair from the pole position. Kurt Stebbins stalked Morseman for most of the event, but Morseman was locked down on the bottom lane and never slipped up to let Stebbins under him.
Morseman, Stebbins and Dylan Cecce are locked into a tight point battle for the Street Stock championship, and the win for Morseman allowed him to gain the advantage and take over the point lead on Stebbins and Cecce. All three of these drivers finished in the top five positions, with there now being less than ten points that separate them for the top spot.
"We got a win earlier this season and it really feels good to be back here again," said Morseman. "This championship is going to be close and tonight will help us out."
Another close point race lies in the Daugherty Auto Sales Mini Stock division. Ron Dailey Jr., Chris Woodard and Karl Born are all fighting for four cylinder supremacy with Dailey and Born taking their turns leading the feature event Saturday night.
Woodard would find himself in trouble just about halfway through the event and had to drop back to fourteenth place on the restart. He would pass nine cars to get to fifth on a caution just four laps later and then would pick up two more spots to get to third.
That is as far as Woodard would get though, as Dailey drove on to his fifth win and second in a row in the Mini Stocks. Ray Hyer led early in the Grant-owned No. 4D6, but couldn't hold off Dailey on the bottom. Woodard, Rick Amidon and John Hand Jr. filled out the top five.
Invader Eric Boozel came into Woodhull Raceway Saturday and went home a Woodhull winner, dominating the twenty-lap Woodhull Auto Supply Front Wheel Drive feature event. Boozel travels the East Coast with his No. 151 front wheel drive, chasing race tracks he's never seen as well as big money shows. Woodhull was on his list of unique tracks they wanted to hit, and he did so in grand fashion.
Shawn Gleason, who has been the cream of the crop this season, finished a strong second over Nate Freeland, Adam DelGrosso and Matt Prescott.
Cole Youse picked up the win in the non-points Daugherty Auto Sales Warriors feature event over Brody Amidon.
This Saturday at Woodhull Raceway, the Patriot Sprint Tour return for their second of two stops to the Steuben County oval. Jared Zimbardi will try and make it two in a row, after winning his first at Woodhull back in June.
The Patriot Sprint Tour will be flanked by the Insinger Performance 370 Modifieds, NAPA Crate Sportsman, SWL Awards 360 Late Models, Joe Willcox Performance Automatics Street Stocks, Quad C challenge (RWD and FWD 4Cyl) and a non-points event for the Daugherty Auto Sales Warriors.
Pit gates will open at 3:30PM with Scott Lyon’s first green flag of the night waving promptly at 6:30PM. General admission gates open at 4:30PM with admission just $18 for adults 13 and up, $10 for Seniors and ages 8-12 with children 7 and under always free at Woodhull Raceway. There is also plenty of free camping on location at Woodhull Raceway.
