Home Turf Defended: Jackie Brown Jr. Wins Short Track Super Series Fueled By Hi-Tek ‘Battle of the Bullring 3’ At Accord Speedway & Earns $5,760; STSS Again Defeats The Weather With Rapid Program
ACCORD, NY - Jackie Brown Jr. tamed the invaders and protected home turf on his way to the New York Truck Parts Inc. ‘Battle of the Bullring 3’ victory at Accord Speedway.
Fighting for redraw positions have become vital in Short Track Super Series Fueled By Hi-Tek (STSS) events, and Brown’s front-row starting spot enabled him to jump out front early and lead all 53 laps. The ‘Battle of the Bullring 3’ stood as the third act of the eight-race Bob Hilbert Sportswear North Region.
Tuesday night’s win sent Brown home with $5,760. The victory marks the second straight win for Brown in a BD Motorsports Media LLC promotion at Accord; Brown captured ‘The Gobbler’ and $7,808.11 in April. He also improved his ‘Battle of the Bullring’ second-place finish from 2013.
With storms attacking the area around the track, the show was hustled along and the Modifieds took the checkered flag by an impressive 9:05 p.m. despite a brief hold-up for a shower.
“Starting second gave me this win,” Brown said in Victory Lane. “You got to have track position in these races, and you need it here.”
The Hurley, N.Y., driver raced from sixth to an all-important third-place in his heat race to qualify for the redraw. After picking second, Brown raced out to an early lead over Tommy Meier, Anthony Perrego, Danny Tyler and Danny Johnson.
Following a few early tangles on the Bullring, the drivers settled into a rhythm. After 20 green-flag laps around the midpoint of the race, Brown entered some difficult lapped traffic. With Brown held up, Meier, of Waldwick, N.J., and Tyler, of Cottekill, N.Y., raced in hot pursuit. The battle was calmed when the fourth caution waved on lap 31 for a slowing Rich Ricci Jr.
When the green was brandished again, it was all Brown, with some help from an outside starting choice. “My car was really tight,” Brown noted. “I had to run the top, especially on the restarts.”
As Brown began to pull away, the real battle was for second. Meier, Tyler and Johnson wrestled in some close quarters for the remainder of the race. Tyler, on many occasions, inched underneath Meier, while Johnson searched for a way pass them both running all over the track in every lane possible.
It was Meier who held on for the runner-up spot earning him over $3,000 for his second top-five finish in the STSS Bob Hilbert Sportswear North Region’s three races.
“This track is nice for us,” Meier stated. “We are really trying to learn some of these other ones.”
Accord Speedway regular Danny Tyler finished third in his STSS Fueled By Hi-Tek season debut.
“I’m really happy to come home third. We are a low-buck team, and this is really good money,” Tyler said. “I felt Danny (Johnson) behind me, but if you keep them guys behind you, you’re doing something right.”
Danny Johnson, of Rochester, N.Y., continued his championship contention with a fourth in the Chris Gennarelli-owned 27J. Anthony Perrego rounded out the top five in the Gary Mann-owned No. 55.
Finishing sixth through 10th, respectively, were heavy mover Mike Mahaney of King Ferry, N.Y. charging from the 14th starting spot; Newburgh, N.Y., native Jerry Higbie clawed for seventh from 17th, highlighting the passing ability; the Economy Movers Hard Charger, earning $200, was Mike Ricci of Tillson, N.Y., who came home eighth after starting in 19th; Jeff Heotzler of Wallkill, N.Y., battled back from an early incident to finish ninth; and Jeff Strunk of Bechtelsville, Pa., rounded out the top ten in the Zubi’s Racing No. 88.
Another strong field of 35 Modifieds were on hand at Accord Speedway including drivers from New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
Jeff Strunk, Danny Tyler, Danny Johnson and Brad Rothaupt, of Rhinebeck, N.Y., captured the four heat wins. Craig Hanson, of Johnstown, N.Y., and J.R. Heffner, of Valatie, N.Y., won the two consolations to earn feature event positions.
Danbury, Conn.’s L.J. Lombardo drove to victory in the Open vs. Crate 602 Sportsman 25-lap main, earning $1,000. Lombardo fended off the relentless advances of Kevin Ward throughout the event. Brian Krummel drove Johnny Illanovsky’s No. 88 to third, followed by Robbie Knipe and Joey Decker.
Demetrios Drellos of Queensbury, N.Y., won the $300 Slingshot main event. Drellos inherited the win when Wyatt Clark, who took the checkered first, was disqualified for losing a muffler per Speedway Entertainment rules. Drellos, who also won the April ‘Gobbler’ make-up Slingshot main, had chased Clark for the entire distance. Bobby Flood, Matthew Schultz, Hunter Lapp and Dillon Steuer trailed.
The next STSS event is Thursday, June 11 when Lentini Auto Salvage presents the ‘Dirty Jersey 3’ at N.J.’s New Egypt Speedway. Modifieds race for $10,000 to win in a 40-lap event joined by the United Racing Club (URC) 360 Sprint Cars and Crate 602 Sportsman. New Egypt serves as event No. 3 of the Pioneer Pole Buildings Inc. South Region presented by Scotty’s Speed & Diesel.

BULLRING BITS: STSS point leader entering Tuesday’s program, Stewart Friesen, battled mechanical issues throughout the night in Jeff Daley’s No. 44. Friesen was forced to take a provisional and had climbed 10 positions prior to his involvement in a tangle that ended his night….
In his second start since his return to racing in the Steve Lowitt-owned Modified, Robbie Green qualified through the consolation and finished 13th….
Billy Van Pelt entered the night eighth in the North Region point standings, but failed to make the call for the consolation due to cooling issues. He did not use a provisional in the feature….
