Richmond trivia question
« on: April 26, 2015, 04:45:27 PM »
Did I understand the announcer (Mike Joy ?) correctly today when he stated NASCAR has been racing at Richmond since 1956 and there has never been a last lap pass for the win?

(I acknowledge this question belongs in the trivia section..but...this seems a bit more than trivial, my apologies)

I thought he said 1953.

He very well may have...

I now have to wonder about last lap passes for the win at other tracks...

Watched the replay today.  1953, first it was dirt. Then 1/2 mile asphalt. Never been a last lap pass for the lead.

I've been told that in 1986, there a last lap pass when Sr. and DW made contact and Kyle Petty won....

Maybe Mike Joy meant a competitive pass for the lead, not one involving the leader(s) wrecking.

Earnhardt and Waltrip crashed, but it wasn't on the last lap.  It was on Lap 398 of the 400 Lap race.

Oh yeah, the source.  Let's go to the Video Vault.

2300:  I watched and listened to your video source and Squier very clearly says "last lap"...The calamity DID indeed start at lap 397 and 398 but the win obviously came on the last lap...

A technicality, yes--since Petty was the beneficiary of the incident BUT he (Kyle) was very much in the hunt--otherwise, he couldn't have won the race...was he ACTUALLY involved in the bangin' and bumpin'?  Obviously not!  But he did win the race which involved two guys who were beating on each other and by doing so, affected the outcome of the race--either way, I'll take the "small" (a)!
