Rainy Saturday, Beautiful Sunday Leads To Overflowing Pits At WVMP.
With storms forcing some area tracks to pull the plug on Saturday's racing, WVMP saw a large number of new racers converge on the Homets Ferry facility until the pit area was filled to capacity.  The influx of competitors led to a great show for the fans, with some drivers having very impressive runs.

Z's Repair Service sponsors the day's racing, which featured special free admission for Little League players and their parents.  The 600cc Micros had Twin 20's scheduled, and they did not disappoint the crowd on hand.  23 of the 600cc micros made the trip to WVMP from as far away as Connecticut.  With only 16 cars to start the A-mains, the track was forced to run a ?B-Main?, or consi, for the first time ever in the 600cc Micro division.  Craig Fox took the B-Main win, transferring to the Twin 20's along with Shayne Ely, John Hull, and Joe Smith.

The stage was set for the first 20 lap main, and outside polesitter John Gearheart wasted no time jumping out front.  Chad VanHorn quickly became a contender, blasting from his 6th place starting spot to 2nd by lap 5.  Equally impressive was the run by ?B-Main? winner Craig Fox, who slipped into 3rd on lap 5 from his 13th place starting spot.  Their mrach to the front would end there, as Gearheart was up to the challenge and took the win.  Russ Thornton and Ryan Greth completed the top 5.

The draw for the invert saw Gearheart pull number 5, which put Greth on the pole for the second race.  Gearheart was eligible for a $100 bonus from WVMP if he could sweep both 20 lap mains, but he would have to do so from the 5th starting spot.  Greth led from the drop of the green, with Fox trying to keep pace in 2nd.  Gearheart made his way to 3rd by lap 10, but lost a spot to Jake Winters on lap 14.  On the next circuit, Gearheart saw his chances for the sweep vanish as he clipped a tire on the infield and spun, bringing out one of less than a handful of cautions in both mains combined!  Greth was flawless in leading wire to wire, with a very consistent Fox taking 2nd, Winters capturing 3rd, and Kevin Halye and Dave Mooers rounding out the top 10.

Nunzi Allegrucci took top honors in the 270 Micros, taking the lead from Darin Bartholomew on lap 2.  Bartholomew's day would end in the infield after a turn 3 jingle sidelined his machine.  John Zionkowski came from his 7th starting spot to run 2nd for most of the event.  While he tried to pressure Allegrucci, ha also had to fend of challenges from Bob Maynard for most of the event.  Jake Hendershot continued to impress, earning 4th, with Luke Schostkewitz taking 5th.

Dalton Maynard spent the entire Slingshot feature, the second of his career, holding off a determined Roger Collins.  While the battle for the lead was constant entertainment, the battle for 3rd was equally exciting as 2006 WVMP Champion Paul Quear worked to hold off current point leader Jake Maynard.  In the late stages, Collins began to increase the pressure on the leader, which allowed Quear and Jake Maynard to close in and join the battle.  Dalton Maynard was able to complete his mission, capturing his first ever Slingshot win ahead of Collins, Quear, J. Maynard, and Steve Ogozaly.  Shelby Ogozaly was credited with the junior slingshot win over Derek Frederick, who did a terrific job in his first ever slingshot start.

The karts put on a great show of their own Sunday as well.  Matt Danneker was very impressive, taking the Rookie Purple win in his first visit to the track.  While a minor infraction saw him fail tech afterwards, he still turned some heads and served notice that he will be a contender whenever he visits WVMP.  Danneker's disqualification led to Kara Chapman being credited with the win over Ryan Funk, Kamdin Maby, Craig Smith, and Jonathan Saxe.

Novice Blue was another thriller, with Casey Steinhoff leading at the get go.  Skylar Middendorf ran 2nd until Jared Zionkowski grabbed the spot on lap 7.  Just when it looked like Steinhoff would not be denied, Zionkowski managed to slip by to take the lead on the final lap, stealing the win from Steinhoff.  Middendorf held on for 3rd, ahead of Alex Shaffer and Dom Rogers.

Collin Hadlock returned to victory lane in Jr. Gold, surviving a great battle with Brianna Baumunk and Nick Funk.

The sportskids feature found Brianna Baumunk in victory lane once again.  The Dushore, PA native has been on a roll lately, and have proven her stamina by doing triple duty each day running sportskids, junior gold, and sportswomen.  The event saw a scary moment when a spinning lapped car collected the 2nd and 3rd place cars of Nick Funk and Logan Terry in a grinding crash that resulted in Terry's machine getting on it's side.  Two of the three machines were done for the day, with the drivers emerging sore but otherwise OK.  Collin Hadlock captured 2nd, with Derek Frederick, Keith Lamphere, and Nick Funk rounding out the top 5.

Baumunk also captured the SportsWomen win over Dawn Roberts, Heather Hadlock, and Krissy Baldwin.  Baldwin debuted a new ?Bumble Bee? themed ride that looked really neat ?buzzing? around the track and earned her the nickname Krissy ?Bee?.

The Sportsman feature was as competitive as ever, with Rodney McConnell leading early.  All race long he fought off the challenges of Burt Maynard and Cody Fassett, but Maynard proved to be too strong and snuck past on lap 13 for his 2nd win in a row.  McConnell held on for 2nd ahead of Fassett, Curtis Fassett, and Matt Roberts.

Tyler Chapman took yet another mediums win.  He held off the advances of Dylan Maynard early then held off Paul Crambo in the closing stages of the race as Maynard's machine slowed with mechanical issues and limped home to an 8th place finish.  Carl Abbott had a strong run for 3rd, with Dalton Maynard and Tamra Benjamin also gettinginto the top 5.

Paul Crambo led the first 11 laps in heavies, but Mike Ely was too strong, taking the win in the kart that has been driven most of the season by rookie Brock Moore.  Bob Coveney had a great run for 2nd, ahead of Crambo, Matt Hoyt, and Jeff Crambo.

Animal Heavy found Matt Roberts in the lead early, but a stalking Derek Chapman made his way past on lap 11 to take his 4th win of the season over 3 for Roberts.  Coveney was 3rd, with Scott Holly 4th.

This week will see a regular show at WVMP, along with the Spalding Foundation For Injured Drivers Charity Race.  This event has been an annual tradition at WVMP, and it benefits a very worthy cause.  The foundation has helped out many local and national drivers and track officials injured during racing events.  $2 from every grandstand ticket sold will go to the foundation.  6 drivers from various racing backgrounds will be on hand to do battle at ?The Nightmare of the Northern Tier? in a special 15 lap charity race.  WVMP will donate $100 to the foundation in the name of the winner.  Come on out and support a great cause and enjoy some fast family fun doing it, this Sunday at WVMP!  For more information, visit www.wvmpracing.com
