Evans Strikes again at WCIS…. Other wins to Gordon, McDonald and Binder
By: Steven Petty
For Immediate Release

PERRY, NY… The racing returned to the Bullring at WCIS for the first time in two weeks with some great racing action in all of the weekly divisions as it was the Mid-Season Championships for all the divisions with  Double Points on the line it made Farm Days at the speedway prove to be important when it comes to the season championships at the end of the season. The racing on the racetrack proved once again that anyone can win on any given night and Friday night was no acception.

James Binder picked up his first career feature win in the 15 lap feature for the Mini Cup Division. Johnny Scutt and Daniel Majchrzak led the field to the Green Flag with Majchrzak getting the early advantage. Robbie Becker took over the top spot away from the Majchrzak machine on lap number 2 and having the advantage for a few laps. Now entering the picture is Michelle Becker. Michelle took over the top spot away from her brother and was looking strong to pick up the win. But James Binder had other ideas, Binder in search for his first career win and made a great move on the final lap to take the lead and win away from Becker. Amy Becker came home a strong third in what was the best race of the season so far for this up and coming division.

Gert McDonald picked up another feature win in the always competitive 4 Cylinder class. TJ Drennen and Eric Haistreiter led the strong field of cars to the start of the 25 lap affair with Drennen taking the early advantage. Then Haistreiter decided it was his turn to be up front on lap 2 taking the lead away from Drennen who took the feature win the last time the division raced back on July the 10th. Eventual winner McDonald from Lockport took her Durf’s 33 Saturn to the front of the field just past the halfway mark in the event away from Haistreiter and not looking behind her as she took the win. Haistreiter who started second and led part of the event held on to take second then it Austyn Fugle, Kevin Grom and Brian Johnson completing the top 5.

Calendonia’s Brian Gordon took the victory in the Super Stock Mid Season Championships. Mike Chainelle and Todd Stone led the field to the green flag with Stone getting the early lead. Great side by side action between Gordon and Stone gave way to the 2008 WCIS Track Champion Gordon taking the lead. With Gordon upfront, the field situated themselves with some great side by side action throughout the event. Points leader Bobby Lippa Jr and Todd Stone put on some great racing as the top 3 in points were the top three on the racetrack for quite a few circuits until push came to shove and contact was made forcing the caution to come out and both cars having to go to the rear of the field. It did however set up some great racing to see if those two could come back through the field and try to real in the leader Gordon but yellow lights would come on again and this time it was Stone getting the short end of the stick and having his machine up against the turn 1 wall. Nobody had anything for the 2008 track champ as Brian Gordon picked up the win with Brian Gleason coming home second and Alexis Wilson picking up her first top 5 finish at the Bullring in third followed closely by Bill Semmler and Bill Levee rounding out the top 5.

Joe Evans grabbed the win the 35 lap feature for the SST Modifieds. Evans took the lead on lap 29 away from Patrick Emerling and never looked back in route to the popular win for the current points leader and 2008’s SST Series Champion. Steve Fuchs and Dick Kluth led the field of open wheelers to the green flag with Kluth getting out to the early lead. Kluth’s stint out front didn’t last long as Fuchs and Mike Bliss came together on the back straightaway causing the first caution of the event. Patrick Emerling who started 5th past Kluth off the restart and looked like he was the car to beat in the 35 lap event. Joe Evans who started 7th moved his way up through the field and was behind Emerling until making his move on lap 29 off a restart getting around the young driver and taking home the victory. Emerling held off the rest of the field to come home second followed by Don King, George Skora III and Amy Catalano who was a late arrival came home fifth after started scratch on the field.

Next week at WCIS is the 50th Anniversary Celebration as we head back throughout and celebrate the past 50 seasons of short track competition in Perry, NY whether it was on the dirt or the asphalt. Gates open at 5:00 pm with racing to get underway at 7:30 with the Mini Cups, 4 Cylinders, SST Super Stocks, SST Modifieds and an appearance by the Casey’s TQ Midget Series.
