http://www.douggrossconstruction.com/We are thrilled to host this memorial event in honor of Gary Montgomery, a man passionate about auto racing at every level, until he lost a courageous battle with cancer in November 2016.
Born in Olean, NY, Montgomery came from a family of race fans who regularly attended events at Wellsville Raceway and the Buffalo Civic Stadium.
Knowledgeable and well-spoken, Gary landed his first announcing job at Bradford Speedway (PA) while he was still in high school.
Over the years, Montgomery was behind the mic, calling the weekly action at Spencer Speedway, and Canandaigua, Weedsport, and Rolling Wheels on the DIRT circuit. His fluid delivery and proficiency earned him announcing stints for the Race of Champions, MRN Radio, and NASCAR events at Daytona, Watkins Glen, and many other major racing facilities.
Dirt Modified race fans may best remember Montgomery at Super DIRT Week, supplying the color commentary from the tower at the Syracuse mile, while his long-time colleague and foil, Joe Marotta, did the play-by-play.
Montgomery was also a featured player on “Rush Hour on DIRT,” Glenn Donnelly’s live cable television program hosted by veteran sports broadcaster Doug Logan.
Montgomery also ventured into the promotional end of the sport, serving as general manager at Canandaigua, and promoter at Dundee (today's Outlaw Speedway) and Little Valley over the years.
This Friday Night the RUSH Late Model Series will fire the engines and do battle around the 4/10 mile clay oval now known as Outlaw Speedway in memory of this great man.
