Danny Creeden Overcomes 14th-Place Starting Position To Win Saturday Night’s Modified Feature At Thunder Mountain Speedway; Brian White (Open Sportsman), Pat Jordan (Crate), Jason Beebe (Rookie), Shane Wolf Jr. (Street Stock), Bailey Boyd (XCel 600 Modified), Michael Robinson (FWD Four Cylinder) & Mike Gray (Vintage) Also Score

CENTER LISLE, NY – Danny Creeden overcame a 14th-starting position to win his second big-block/small-block Modified event of the 2016 season on Saturday at Thunder Mountain Speedway.

Creeden, of Wurtsboro, N.Y., carved through traffic before making a bold outside pass of Nick Nye to earn a $1,200 payday. Creeden also won on Friday at Accord (N.Y.) Speedway for a sweep of the weekend.

“The car would go wherever I needed it to,” Creeden, the current Modified point leader, said afterward. “I have to thank the Spoonhowers for preparing a wide track. The top was there when I needed it tonight.”

A large crowd took in Saturday’s event on a beautiful evening for racing. More than 130 race cars filled the pit area.

Nye, a talented graduate of the Open Sportsman division, utilized a front-row starting berth to burst into the lead aboard the No. 6NN. Through a series of early caution flags, Nye was able to maintain his advantage in search of his first Mod score of 2016 on the Mountain.

Creeden, meanwhile, was climbing through the field.

Prior to halfway, the Smokers Choice No. 16X had cracked the top-five. A double-file restart allowed Creeden to arrive in third. Following an extended side-by-side battle with Jeremy Smith for second, he completed an inside pass.

At that point, Nye remained the leader.

Finding speed on the topside of the three-eighths-mile oval, Creeden swept past Nye on the outside.

“Nick is a good racer,” Creeden said. “I know they work hard. It was a shame to have to pass him. He started guarding the bottom. That slowed him enough I could go around him.”

Late in the race, ninth-starter Alan Barker of Norwich, N.Y., arrived in second and chased Creeden across the line for his strongest effort of the season. Jeremy Smith of Triangle, N.Y., ran inside the top-five for the entire distance and placed third, his best 2016 result. Nye was fourth and ultra-consistent Ryan Jordan of Speedsville, N.Y., completed the front five.

Brian White of Owego, N.Y., roared around the outside lane to win his second consecutive Open Sportsman event. White started sixth, powering to the top groove at the drop of the green. In four laps’ time, his No. 56 powered to the lead and was never headed. He earned $700 from the posted purse and another $100 bonus for a total of $800!

Eddie White completed a one-two sweep by the family, finishing in second. Chris Jordan climbed from seventh to finish third, with rookie Larry Mekic and Kevin Jordan filling out the front five.

Defending divisional champion Pat Jordan of Speedsville, N.Y., righted his struggles in Crate 602 Sportsman competition. Jordan took over the lead following a tangle in turn three that sent leader Gregg Turner spinning and damaged the race cars of Tom Collins and Shayne Spoonhower. Once in front, Jordan survived a number of restarts in the 20-lap main, earning $500.

Mike Nagel Jr. fended off Isaiah Forward in the battle for second, with Matt Brewer and Tyler Ward completing the front five.

Jason Beebe of Berkshire, N.Y., returned to Rookie Sportsman Victory Lane after a back-and-forth battle for the lead with Landon Cummings. The win was Beebe’s second of the season. A.J. Williams placed second, with Cummings, Dan Allen and Nick Soules rounding out the top-five finishers.

Shane Wolf Jr. is back on track in Street Stock action. Wolf, of Susquehanna, Pa., discovered a faulty tire gauge had hampered his setup efforts. Righting the issue for the 20-lap main, Wolf was able to capitalize on a fourth-place starting position to earn the $500 victory. Jonathan Carpenter charged hard from a trip to the pits for second. Mike Wilbur, Earl Zimmer and K.J. Yager completed the front five.

Bailey Boyd of Binghamton, N.Y., garnered a win in the XCel 600 Modified ranks. Boyd outdistanced Chris Jordan, pulling double-duty on the program, to earn the win. Will Eastman, the 2015 track champion, was third with Tom Shiner and Jamie Frantz in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Michael Robinson of Harpursville, N.Y., returned after a week off and scored the FWD Four Cylinder triumph. Robinson battled Rich Gardiner for the lead. Gardiner, despite a left-rear flat tire, put up a solid run to hold on for second, with Eric Rowley, Chris Taylor and Corey Lewis in tow.

Mike Gray of Palatine Bridge, N.Y., registered the win in the Classics on Dirt 15-lap Vintage event.

THUNDER THOUGHTS: Another strong car count with 22 Modifieds, 16 Open Sportsman, 25 Crate 602 Sportsman, 11 Rookie Sportsman, 21 Street Stocks, 16 XCel 600 Modifieds, 11 Four Cylinders and nine Vintage Cars on hand….
