Hodnett Brings DIRTcar Nationals Gator Trophy Back to Pennsylvania

Strickler fends off Ty Dillon for UMP Modified win at Volusia Speedway Park

BARBERVILLE, Fla. - Feb. 11, 2015 - Greg Hodnett dominated the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions feature Wednesday night at Volusia Speedway Park's DIRTcar Nationals, and then Kyle Strickler held off Ty Dillon to capture the DIRTcar UMP Modified nightcap.

Hodnett, one of Pennsylvania's fiercest competitors, quickly jumped out front while the rest of the field battled behind him. Hodnett kept up his pace on the high side as Danny Lasoski and Brad Sweet closed to finish second and third.

"I just tried to drive the wheels off of it," said Hodnett, of Thomasville, Pa. "Fortunately my guys gave me a great racecar to take advantage of a front row starting spot. It doesn't happen very often so we'll try to do everything we can to take advantage of it and it worked out for us.

"I was hand-over-hand a couple of times in traffic ... when you can't run your own line you're trying to do things. It was a little bit of a handful up on the cushion trying to slide guys and do everything. Fortunately for us it worked out and I got one of these beautiful gator trophies."

Strickler powered through a clean but wild UMP Modified main event, riding the cushion as Ty Dillon applied the pressure. A late caution bunched everybody together but Strickler, of Mooresville, N.C., had a strong restart to keep Ty Dillon behind him. Austin Dillon, who won on Tuesday night, advanced four spots to finish third ahead of hard charger Nick Hoffman, who improved 10 spots.

"That cushion was getting a little rough up there, lapped traffic, that was getting a little crazy," Strickler said. "I wasn't sure how close the Dillon boys were there. Those guys, they've had rocket ships last night and tonight. I knew they would be coming and if I could pick and choose my way through lapped traffic that was going to help me. Starting up front definitely was very important. If I could get to that cushion I was going to have a good restart because I got some of that moisture off of four here and got to the top."

Nightly doubleheaders at Volusia run Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21. Thursday night's action once again features Tony Stewart's UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Cars and DIRTcar UMP Modifieds.

Racing Discussion / Ron Baker - Racing Ambassador
« on: December 11, 2014, 09:46:21 AM »
Ron Baker  - Racing Ambassador
Freedom, NY...Ron Baker died of a heart attack on December 9 at the age of 78.  The loss of this great ambassador of area stock car racing sent shock waves across the upstate New York racing community.
Baker began his racing journey as a fan after attending a stock car race at Wellsville Raceway in 1951.  He became a race car driver at Hunt Raceway in 1957.  His race car driving career ended with a crash at Freedom Raceway in August 2010.  From that point until his death, he was a race car owner.
The most important aspect of Ron Baker's racing career is that he was a highly respected ambassador of the sport throughout the journey, an ambassador loved by many and respected by all.
In recent years, Baker's trademark was that his was the first car in line to enter the pits and often the last to leave.  First, simply because racing was his passion.  Last, because everyone wanted to share a racing story with Ron Baker, a story for sure and a Coke perhaps, but no beer.  Baker was a proud card carrying member of AA for over 25 years.
Most of Baker's racing was on area dirt tracks in late models, but included on his resume is a short stint on the asphalt at Holland Speedway, a few years in the cockpit of Chevette and Gremlin  bodied big block modifieds, and  even a year or so when he raced a super B.
Baker's first win was at Olean Raceway in 1958.  His last win was just two months ago when Ward Schell wheeled Ron's beautiful #74 to victory during the Fall Classic at McKean County Raceway.  A complete record of race wins and championships does not exist, but there are many in a variety of race cars from the first 1949 Mercury street stock to the current Rocket crate late.  The list of tracks where he competed is very long, but goes from Angelica to Woodhull with tracks in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ontario.  For a few years he raced and won during an ambitious program that included Thursday nights at McKean County, Friday nights at Angelica, Saturday nights at Olean, Sunday afternoons at Drum, and Sunday nights at Bradford.  He outlasted all of those race tracks.
Perhaps Baker is best known for his late model program in the Maple City Dodges that he campaigned  from 1972 - 1976. Baker claimed that the highlight of his driving career was winning the New York State Late Model Championship at Weedsport Speedway in 1974.  He was an interloper at Weedsport where Will Cagle held court every Sunday night.  Baker beat Cagle at the capital of DIRT Motorsports in front of a full house, most of whom had never seen Baker and his Mighty Mopar. Those  in attendance that night witnessed Ron Baker at the top of his game.
After the accident at Freedom, age and related health issues took Baker from the cockpit, but not the race tracks.  Baker continued to transport his immaculate #74 race cars behind his immaculate GMC to area race tracks for hired guns to do the driving.  Most recently,  Ron Baker and  Ward Schell made a strong team that produced a championship, several  wins and always a good show.  Baker understood about the show.  He was truly a great ambassador of stock car racing.
Visitation for Ronald E. Baker is Saturday December 13 at the W.S. Davis Funeral Home in Arcade, NY

John Waters Wins THE ISKY
...Mikey Wonderling Crowned 2014 BRP CanAm Champion...

Woodhull, NY...Sep 20, 2014...John Waters, the 2013 Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) CanAm Late Model Series champion won his first Series tour event of the year on the final night of the 2014 tour.  Mikey Wonderling won the 2014 Series championship.  It all happened in the ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Championship at Woodhull Raceway.

Waters used the good luck of the number one chip in the redraw and then his 100s of laps experience on the Woodhull high banks to fend of repeated challenges to earn the win.  Waters and Jason McGregor paced the 22 car field to Scott Lyon's green flag for the start of THE ISKY.  Waters won the drag race and was scored the leader.  From there the Whitesville, NY driver lead the remaining 49 laps to earn a $1500 pay day and a pair of very nice trophies.

Waters lead the whole deal, but it was never easy.  For the first eight laps a very racy McGregor pestered Waters on both the inside and outside.  On lap nine Glenn Whritenour slipped past McGregor and mounted his challenge for a repeat win in THE ISKY.  Whritenour, recently earned his seventh Woodhull BRP late model championship, proving that he certainly  knows how to tame the Woodhull high banks.  Whritenour had his hands full with Racin' Jason McGregor who was looking for his first ever  BRP A-main win.  On lap 26 Bruce Miller's car came to life.  From that point forward Killer Miller and the Jasper Jet waged a great battle for second which allowed a little, very little, relief for Waters. On lap 28 Miller took sole possession of second and was all over the rear bumper of Waters for the lead.  They were side by side at the stripe on lap 35.  Waters prevailed by protecting to bottom lane. From that point forward the scorers then had a difficult time scoring second as Miller and Whritenour swapped that spot many times. With five to go it was clear it would be either Waters or Miller in the BRP CanAm Victory Lane.  With the double checkered flags flying it was Waters over Miller with Whritenour in the show position all within a car length of each other.

McGregor, Miller, Waters, and Whritenour put on a fantastic show, but they were not the only show.  Jared Hill matched  his previous best finish in Series tour competition with a great run from 11th to finish fourth. Fast Freddie Amann was both fast and steady for his best ever BRP tour finish in fifth.  Billy Holmes landed the ride in Ron Scharf's car and rode it out for a great sixth place in the final tally. The 50 lap affair was slowed on seven occasions which hurt the race  rhythm, but no injuries or major race car damage.

The Douglas B. Miles Insurance Twins used to set the starting line- up were won by Adam Depuy and Steve LeBarron.  They each earned $100 cash and a $50F/A Products engine builder certificate. The Winters Performance Products Hard Charger $100 award winner was Buck Payne who started 19th finished 7th.

In addition to THE ISKY event the other story of the night was the season long BRP CanAm Series point battle.  Mikey Wonderling had won the championship when he started the race so no real drama there.  However, behind Mikey the other top eleven spots in the standings were up for grabs.  Dave Dubois helped every one else's cause when he elected to skip the race and compete at Raceway 5.  DuBois was second in the championship chase before the race and twelfth after.  Bruce Miller advanced from fourth to second, Mike Wonderling's status was unchanged in third.  Behind Big Mike the others simply improved by one position.  An interesting and unfortunate note is that neither Wonderling finished the race.  Early in the contest they both appeared to be contenders for the win or at a minimum a top five finish.  At the 30 lap mark they were fourth and fifth.  Mickey's troubles started when contact flattened a tire.  Big Mike was helped into the infield and in the process a J-bar was broken.

Bottom line it was a very entertaining event and a great way to end the Series after 12 years, 145 tour events, and over 1000 Series weekly events.

THE ISKY Finish: JOHN WATERS, Bruce Miller, Glenn Whritenour, Jared Hill, Fred Amann, Bill Holmes, Buck Payne, Carl Hughes, Mick Seeley, Steve LeBarron, Jon Rivers, John Zimmerman, Steve Watson, Cecil LaBarron, Wally Wade, Mikey Wonderling, Mike Wonderling, Adam Depuy, Jason McGregor, Jay McConnell, Brian Grant, Rick Loucks

Unofficial point standings - top 12 of 35: 1. Mikey Wonderling 1635, 2. Bruce Miller 1584, 3. Mike Wonderling 1552, 4t. John Zimmerman  1544, 4t. Adam Depuy 1544, 6. Jared Hill  1504, 7. Wally Wade 1410, 8. Glenn Whritenour 1390,
 9. Jon Rivers 1380, 10. Steve Watson 1378, 11. Steve LeBarron 1347, 12. Dave DuBois 1324

2014 BRP CanAm Championship On The Line Saturday
... The ISKY and Insurance Twins Will Determine Final Standings...

St Catharines, ON... The 2014 Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) CanAm Model Series points chase will come to an end on Saturday September 20 at Woodhull Raceway.  The race event will be the 50 lap ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Series Championship. The race is a big deal, but perhaps the bigger deal is that the final race will determine the final point standings for the season long championship battle.  Positions in point standings determine the distribution of the $15,000 case point fund and product awards.

Points for The ISKY will be distributed on the standard 100 to win / 40 to start schedule used for all Series tour events.  However...

New for this final Series event are the Insurance Twins to determine starting positions in the ISKY.  The Insurance Twins are two 12 lap feature events that will replace the standard F/A Products heat race / B-Main format.  The Insurance Twins will be presented by Douglas B. Miles Insurance Agency (Miles-Agency.com) and New York Central Mutual (NYCU.com).  A $500 purse has been set for the Twins and each will award 200 points for all that start.  Series Director Gary Montgomery says, " I am working to get additional money for the Twins.  I am close on that objective, but while I work that we have added the bonus points.  Each driver that starts a twin will earn 200 bonus points which will be added to points earned in The ISKY."

Point standings, including both Series tour points and home track bonus points, for the top 12 of 47 drivers that have earned points going into The ISKY:  Mikey Wonderling - 1385, Dave DuBois - 1324, Mike Wonderling - 1304, Bruce Miller - 1289, John Zimmerman - 1286, Adam Depuy - 1258, Jared Hill - 1180, Wally Wade - 1158, Steve Watson - 1122, Jon Rivers - 1120, Glenn Whritenour - 1100, Steve LeBarron - 1085

Ted White will open the Woodhull Raceway gates at 3:30 on Saturday September 20 for the seventh annual running of The ISKY.  Race time is scheduled for 5:30. In addition to the BRP 360 late models included on the agenda are crate sportsman and an open streets stock program.  Additional information at WoodhullRaceway.com

Bob Dixon Named Grand Marshal For The ISKY
...First Champion Will Crown the Final Champion...

St Catharines, ON... Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) is proud to announce that Bob Dixon has been named the grand marshal for the ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Series Championship. Dixon won the first Series championship in 2003 and repeated as champion in 2004.

"It is really appropriate that our first champion crown our final champion," shares Nancy Bicknell from her BRP office in St. Catharines.

We will have both a race winner and a Series champion in the BRP CanAm Victory Lane on Saturday night. Of course, it could be the same person! Not only was Bob the first and two time Series champion, but he has always been a great ambassador for our program. When he stopped (never retired) driving himself he became a key player in the development of his son's (Steve) racing career.  Bob's championship style rubbed off on Steve who earned the Series championship in 2009. It will be great to see Bob back in the BRP CanAm Victory Lane on Saturday."

Race fans are encouraged to attend the ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Championship which will be a features only format.  The Douglas B. Miles Agency and New York Central Mutual will present the "Insurance" Twins, 12 lap features,  to set the field for the 50 lap ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Championship.  There will be no time trials, no heats, and no dash just features for the BRP 360 late models as they take to the Woodhull Raceway high banks.

Ted White will open the gates to his Woodhull Raceway at 3:30 on Saturday September 20 for the seventh annual running of The ISKY.  Race time is scheduled for 5:30. Also included on the agenda are crate sportsman and a open streets stocks.  Additional information at WoodhullRaceway.com

Racing Discussion / Stage Is Set For ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Championship

Stage Is Set For The ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Championship
   ...Mother Nature Played A Role...

St Catharines, ON... The Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) CanAm Series home track bonus points (HTBP) program is complete.  The rainy and cold weekend provided by Mother Nature produced rescheduled events at Freedom Raceway and Raceway 5.  The reschedule dates are outside the HTBP program window. Woodhull Raceway had competed their HTBP program on August 30.  The stage is now set for the ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Championship at Woodhull Raceway on Saturday September 20.

Dave DuBois, Glenn Whritenour, and Mikey Wonderling top the point standings list at their home track and as a result each has earned 1000 HTBPs which will be added to the points earned in BRP CanAm tour events.

The ISKY Cams BRP Championship will award tour event points on the standard 100 to win / 40 to start points allocation.

Glenn Whritenour, the current and seven time Woodhull Raceway BRP 360 late model champion, won four BRP 360 late model A-mains at Woodhull this year. Accordingly, he will be considered one of the favorites to win The ISKY on Saturday.  Whritenour won The ISKY when it was held at Weedsport Speedway in 2008.

Whritenour will have lots of his friends looking for the ISKY trophy and $1500 check with no regard for his championship status.  Expected  in that category are other 2014 Woodhull A-Main winners, Adam Depuy, Carl Hughes (2 wins), Bruce Miller (2 wins), Buck Payne, John Waters (5 wins), Mike Wonderling, and Mikey Wonderling.

Add to the potential winners list Jeremy Wonderling.  Jeremy is the winningest driver in the 12 year history of the BRP CanAm Series with 18 wins and was the 2011 BRP CanAm Series champion.  He has landed the driver assignment for Ron Scharf's #65.  The Scharf car has never raced at Woodhull, but Mr. Excitement has many Woodhull wins and the car is a proven winner.  Steve Dixon won with it twice at Freedom this year.

Not yet on a winners list, but getting closer all the time is Steve LeBarron. Steve finished third in Woodhull points this year.  He will be ready to go and put his dad's #29 in Victory Circle on Saturday night.

Cecil LaBarron has not won yet this year, but the veteran has been close and he certainly knows his way to Victory Lane let's see if he can get there on Saturday night. Note - LaBarron and LeBarron are both correct spellings!

Ted White will open the gates to his Woodhull Raceway at 3:30 on Saturday September 20 for the seventh annual running of The ISKY.  Race time is scheduled for 5:30.  Additional information at WoodhullRaceway.com

Racing Discussion / BRP CanAm Tour At Little Valley Saturday

BRP CanAm Series Tour @ Little Valley Saturday
   ...Final LVS Event For 2014...

St Catharines, ON...The Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) CanAm Late Model Series is included on the championship night agenda at  Little Valley Speedway (LVS) for Saturday September 13.  The now traditional LVS season ending affair includes the once a year appearance of the 358 modifieds.  BRP will be well represented by the modified contingent which will include race teams from Merrittville Speedway, Ransomville Speedway, and Woodhull Raceway.

The BRP CanAm late models have been a constant in the LVS program since the Series began there in 2003. Since then the Cattaraugus County Agricultural Society has hosted 28 Series events at their race track on the Cattaraugus County Fairgrounds..  What is different for 2014 is that only one driver has won all of the events.  Granted, due to the short schedule which was further shortened by rainouts there have been only two events, but  Mike Wonderling, a racing veteran from Scio, NY, is two for two.  "Big" Mike and will be going for a clean sweep on Saturday night.

"Big" Mike's attempt will meet plenty of resistance from the rest of the BRP CanAm gang.  Based on past records Bruce Miller tops that list.  Miller has won seven of the 28 BRP tour events completed at LVS.  Based on 2014 tour stats Mikey Wonderling must be considered as a strong contender to stop his dad's win streak.  Mikey has never won a BRP tour event at LVS.  He intends to change that on Saturday.  Included among the others expected that will put up a strong fight for the $1000 first place check and winner's trophy include Bob Close, Steve LeBarron, Scooter Pangrazio, and Glenn Whritenour.

Close will pilot Ron Scharf's #65.  Scarf has had other drivers in his car this year when Close was not available.  Close is available Saturday and he is hungry for a win as his race car driving career winds down.

Steve LeBarron is perhaps the most improved driver in the Series this year.  A major improvement would be his first ever BRP tour win.

Scooter Pangrazio and Alan Wais march to their own drummer and when they march it is always exciting and usually produces good results.  This team has one Series win.  That came in 2008 at Canandaigua.

Glenn Whritenour recently earned his seventh BRP late model championship at Woodhull Raceway.  Whritenour is a three time BRP tour winner, but has never won at LVS.  The Jasper (NY) Jet hopes to change that on Saturday.

The LVS schedule for Saturday September 13 is for the gates to open at 3:30, BRP draw 4:30 -  5:30; hot laps at 5:30; races at 6:30.

...Home Track Bonus Points Also A Big Deal...

St Catharines, ON...Weekend racing leads to the ISKY Cams BRP CanAm Championship at Woodhull Raceway on Saturday September 20.  Standing in the path are Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) CanAm Late Model Series weekly events to determine track champions and home track bonus points at Freedom Speedway, Little Valley Speedway, and Raceway 5.

Only Woodhull Raceway has completed its point earning season.  There Glenn Whritenour locked up his seventh BRP Late Model track championship at his home track.  That is correct, seven times the Jasper, NY pilot has emerged as the late model champion of the Steuben County high banks.  Whritenour will now focus on the ISKY Championship which he won at Weedsport Speedway (then Cayuga County Fair Speedway) in 2008. He likes his odds at his home track where he has already won four times this year.

Friday September 12 Freedom Speedway will close out the first year under the direction of Troy Shuknecht. Troy and his team have done an incredible job at saving that track.  The point battle "on the hill" is a great one with Mikey, Wonderling, Mike Wonderling, Jimmy Johnson, and John Zimmerman all in the hunt for the championship.  Mikey leads his dad by a seven points!

Saturday September 13 is a double dip deal with race teams and race fans.  They are forced to make a decision between Little Valley Speedway and Raceway 5.  For most it is a no brainer - Little Valley.

The big deal at Little Valley in addition to track points is the question if Mike Wonderling can go undefeated on the big fast half mile.  The short schedule and rain outs have resulted in a mere three events at LVS schedule this year.  Big Mike has won them both and will be totally focused on making it a clean sweep.

At Raceway 5 Dave DuBois and Jon Rivers are locked into a two man battle for the track championship and the bonus points that they will take to the ISKY Championship.

MIKEY WONDERLING WINS BROCK YOUNG MEMORIAL
   ...Third Time The Charm...

Woodhull, NY...Aug 16, 2014...Mikey Wonderling won the 12th annual Brock Young Memorial with  a dominating performance in which he led all 25 laps of the contest. This special memorial event had been rained out first at Little Valley and then at Woodhull last month, but the third time was the charm for the second generation driver from Scio, NY.  The very special charm was that Mikey and Brock were best friends from their early childhood until Brock's 1992 death in a highway accident.

"Wow, this is really something!  It  is very  hard for me to talk.  This has been a dream and now here I am in the BRP (Bicknell Racing Products) Victory Circle for Brock's race.  He was my best friend and now to win his race with his brothers (AJ and Kyle), sister (Kari), and others from the Young family here, this is just really special," shared a very emotional Mikey Wonderling in his interview with track announcer, Paul Harkenrider.

Wonderling won the opening lap drag race over Steve Watson and was never headed.  Dave DuBois challenged Wonderling for the first four laps until he lost second to Mike Wonderling  senior. Mike lost second to John Waters on lap eight and the stage was set for another much anticipated Waters / Wonderling battle.

That battle lasted only until lap 14 when Waters and Mike Wonderling tangled to bring out the caution.  Both restarted at the rear, but never made it back to the front.  When the green flew for the restart, the top five were Mikey, Dave DuBois, Bruce Miller, Glenn Whritenour, and John Zimmerman.

Bruce Miller, the winner of the past three Brock Young Memorials, used the very top of the track to overtake DuBois and to set sail for Mikey.  However, Miller had to concern himself with DuBois who was good on the bottom and continued to show his nose as the top three raced under a blanket.  After a lap 20 caution and restart, Miller went back to dancing with the devil on the top and over the top in his attack on Mikey.  As the checkers were flying, so were the sparks as Miller's car bounced off  the wall and into the quarter panel of Mikey's Evingham Used Cars entry.  Miller's bid for four in a row ended up about four feet short.  DuBois watched from third about two car lengths back.

Behind the top three was another outstanding battle with Brett Marlett, Glenn Whritenour, John Zimmerman, and Steve Watson all swapping positions several times on several laps.  Marlett prevailed in that battle to claim fourth and earn the Winters Performance Products $100 hard charger award.  Whritenour, the six time Woodhull BRP CanAm weekly series champion and current track point leader, completed the top five.

John Zimmerman had never even seen Woodhull Raceway other than on video, but he is a quick study and did a remarkable job to finish sixth.  Steve Watson, Barry (Buck) Payne, Steve LeBarron, and Adam Depuy completed the top ten finishers.

Notes: Victory Circle was emotion filled with many of the Young family present to present the trophy and $1422 check... four quick cautions allowed the 25 lap race to be completed in 14 minutes.... Ted White and his team prepared a perfect track for the A-Main after a very heavy track for the heats...17 of the 21 starters raced to Scott Lyon's double checkers... F/A Products $50                             qualifying race winners were Jon Rivers, Bruce Miller, and Dave DuBois... the next and final  BRP tour event  is the ISKY Cams Championship - $1500 to win - 50 laps at Woodhull on Saturday September 20

Third Attempt For Brock Young Memorial
...Now Saturday August 16 At Woodhull...

St Catharines, ON...After the rain outs at Little Valley Speedway in early July and again in late July at Woodhull Raceway the Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) CanAm Series will try again this Saturday (August 16) to complete the 12th annual Brock Young Memorial.

"As previously shared when the event was first rained out this important event needs to be completed.  The Young family and Ted White, owner and promoter of Woodhull Raceway, have set the new date for Saturday August 16.  This date works since we already had it on the tour schedule when Raceway 5 is closed,"  shares Gary Montgomery, BRP CanAm Series director.

The Brock Young Memorial event was first run in 2003 to honor the life of Brock Young, a BRP CanAm driver who died in a 2002 highway accident.  Since then, the event has taken on added importance as it honors Roxie Young, Brock’s mother, who died of cancer in 2009.  Brock’s father, Dick, brothers AJ and Kyle, and sister Kari all work to carry on this memorial event.

Eight drivers have earned a Brock Young Memorial trophy and the $1422 check from the eleven events completed to-date.  The defending race champion is Bruce Miller who has won the event for the past three years.  Other winners of Brock's race include Bryce Davis (2010), Steve Dixon (2009), Darren Kish (2005), Larry Knowles (2007), Rich Michael, Jr (2006), Todd Rice (2003), and Jeremy Wonderling (2004 and 2008).

For the race teams, the event has special meaning for those that know the Young family. Of course, the $1422 and winner's trophy are special also.

As a result of three rain outs and the cancellation of two BRP CanAm tour events at Raceway 5 the planned ten event tour is now down to five and it is crunch time for the teams competing for the 2014 BRP CanAm point fund.  Brock's race and the ISKY Cams Championship on Saturday September 20 are all that remain.  Of course, BRP CanAm Series weekly racing continues at Freedom Speedway on Friday nights and the teams head for either Raceway 5 or Woodhull Raceway on Saturdays where those that compete on the tour earn home track bonus points.

Woodhull Raceway gates will open at 4:30 on Saturday July 19 for race action at 6:30.  Details at www.WoodhullRaceway.com.

Updates leading up to and during Saturday's race can be found on the BRP CanAm Late Model Series Facebook page.
