Disher McKinsel in the 11D w/ Kniessel on the outside...Weedsport 1979...grouped w/ a bunch of photos by Russ Mills so my guess would be he shot this one.

I took this photo at Syracuse because I thought the car was sharp. I have no idea who it is. I'd say I shot this in probably 1977 or 78. Since it was Syracuse the car could be from anywhere in the north-east. Anybody know who it was?  DALE

Here's Loren Holland JR at Waterloo. I believe he's still racing as I saw a car at Five Mile a couple years ago but it could be his kid now. Loren was pretty fast but quite a bit on the wild side so he was prone to getting tangled up. I snapped the photo, DALE

Here's one I took at the Langhorne National open. I think it is 1971. Dutch Hoag passin the 71. Could possibly be Lee Osborn this year in the 7 instead of Hoag. I can never remember the #71's name but I know he was a Lancaster regular so you guys can fill me in . Not too bad a pic for a ten year old boy with a WWII era box camera from the stands......wish I had took a bunch more!  DALE

Can anyone on here tell me how the practice of putting the state abbreviation (such as "NY") after a race car number got started?  Was it just something that a few people did?  Did it hold any particular significance?  Was it a rule for a particular sanction or track?  Or was it just home-state pride?  Any insight is appreciated.
That's a good question.  I always wondered that myself.  It seems like the modifieds in the 60’s and 70’s that had those State abbreviations lettered on their cars ran at NASCAR tracks: Fonda, Malta, U-R, Stafford, Norwood, Riverside Park, Thompson, Islip.  I think NASCAR had separate State championship point standings in addition to their National Championships at one time.  I wonder if it had something to do with that?

Not only did they race at mostly Nascar tracks but they were also part of the All-Star Series of drivers, I believe.

Dave Kelly drove a #17 Gremlin at the 1978 Syracuse Schaefer 100 with Brightbill Racing on it, and it didn't look quite like that for the race. It had Dave Kelly on the door next to the 17 and had more/a different color scheme over the rear sheet metal tire. It possibly could be his car from 1977 as the "17" looks the same.
The Davey Moore yellow #6 is parked next to the Holland #360 in that picture.
The Charlie Rudolph photo is from the early '80s?
Dutch Hoag drove in the 1971 Langhorne National Open. There wasn't a Lancaster #71 on the roster nor a #71 in the Langhorne race in 1971 though...... It could be from practice (unlikely I know) and might be Long Island's Joe Krukowski's #71 (he wasn't in either of the '70 or '71 Langhorne events). If it's from 1970, I don't know who it is then as I don't have the car numbers attached to the drivers who were in the race.
It makes sense about state abbreviations also being on the cars for All Star Racing League Series events.

Dutch Hoag photo is 1971. Lee drove the Valiant #7 in 1970. The #71 appears to be #7, also, as it looks like the "1" was added due to Dutch being #7.

I'm taking a wild guess about the #71 coach.I think it might be Mike Grbac.

Dale... I've seen that 17 car in another picture somewhere before that has the driver identified. If I run across it again, I'll fill in the blank. Question -- is that Chuck Ciprich standing by the right rear with the classic '70s porn star sideburns??   :o

Dutch Hoag didn't race the 1970 Langhorne National Open due to illness and Mitch Smith drove his coupe with Lee Osborne driving his Valiant.
Dutch was driving his Camaro at the last Langhorne National Open in 1971. The picture posted was taken in the 1971 event as was stated. The deal was the original field didn't have a #71 in it, and that included renumbered cars. It was rained out, and the race was run a week later. Bugs Stevens, Fred DeSarro and Jerry Cook decided to skip the race and went to compete at a Martinsville race instead for NASCAR points. Three other drivers didn't return either that were in the original field. That opened up the field for six drivers to be added when the race was actually run. NJ's Mike Grbac was able to make the field with his renumbered #71 and as a sidenote he wasn't even an original alternate starter (there were four of them) after the original field was set.

Since someone mention John's name here is one of his cars. I bought this picture in 86 at Weedsport.
