Racing Discussion / What was NASCAR thinking??
« on: February 15, 2021, 06:03:11 PM »
OR, weren't they thinking at all?

One of the biggest races of the year, the Daytona 500 was scheduled to be telecast this past Sunday, beginning at 2:30 PM, EST. As usual, while the broadcast indeed began at 2:30, the usual pre-race "stuff" took about 30 minutes to be tended to, so the race, threatening weather notwithstanding, didn't start until around 3 PM.

15 laps in, a "medium one" occurred, which created a red flag condition, which then dragged on for 6 hours, as the skies did open up. Now, with respect to the idea of getting the race in, on "race day", yeah I understand that.....sort of. Fans like me, checked in, from time to time, and as the day dragged on, I seriously doubted the race would be run. The last check I made, at 7 PM, they were still showing a re-run of the Busch Clash. Sure looked like the remainder of the race (450 miles) would be postponed until Monday.

Imagine my surprise, as I was returning home from an early dental appointment on Monday morning, and a DJ on the radio was talking about the results of the race............

Racing Discussion / Anyone watch the Busch Clash?

Although running the race on the road course was an interesting twist, I think the idea of making it partially a "dirt track" event wasn't the best of ideas......

« on: November 25, 2020, 06:59:33 AM »
This has been a rough year, for both we racing enthusiasts, as well as the population in general. Fortunately, if you're reading this post, you've managed to survive the uproar, although not necessarily in a joyous fashion. Nonetheless, I sincerely wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving, urge you to stay safe, and hope that 2021 brings better times, and a resume to racing.

Racing Discussion / Here we go.....AGAIN!
« on: September 22, 2020, 07:57:27 AM »
Lengthy article in today's edition of the Rochester, NY newspaper, the 'Democrat&Chronicle', outlining yet another group of griping neighbors wanting to curtail/shut down a long standing race track. This time, the target is the Canandaigua, NY dirt track. Although the article didn't come right out and support the track's operation, at least they mentioned that the track had been in operation since the 1950s, and was using a "grandfather clause" to remain in operation.

Racing Discussion / Genesee Speedway "busted"
« on: July 28, 2020, 07:33:59 AM »
A list of bars/restaurants in the Rochester area, was posted in today's (07/28) Democrat&Chronicle newspaper, citing various infractions of the state's Covid-19 restrictions, with respect to their operating procedures. Genesee Speedway, in Batavia was also listed as one of the violators, but none of these violations were specifically spelled out, at any of the establishments. A generalization of "patrons not socially distant" was mentioned, however.....

Racing Discussion / They staged a "protest".
« on: June 08, 2020, 06:49:30 AM »
Many race fans are wondering when race tracks will re-open, based on the various states' mandates, regarding the gathering of sports fans at sporting events. As we all know, people are getting quite frustrated over this. Ace Speedway, in Elon North Carolina decided that they had had enough.....

Instead of having "races" this past Saturday evening, they staged a protest, according to a report that was published in today's (6/8/20) Rochester NY, 'Democrat&Chronicle' newspaper. Racers, and about 2000 "protesters", showed up in protest of the state's "anti-gathering" regulations.

Although I'm not familiar with this young modified driver, I read in the Rochester newspaper a few days ago, that Ted Appleton had passed away, about a week ago. May he RIP.

...which means that in New York, automobile racing has ended for the season. It also means that Christmas is just around the corner. And since there hasn't been any activity on this site for several days, allow me to "rev it up", a bit and be the first to wish all you race fans a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Racing Discussion / Catalano Racing
« on: November 30, 2019, 12:33:37 PM »
For those who still choose to read printed material (like this old timer), the December 2019 issue of 'Speedway Illustrated' magazine has an multi-page article on the Catalano family. It's an interesting read, with decent depth,  but IMHO, it could have made more mention of the multi-generational racing participation of the family, that became the "seeds" of the current generation.

Racing Discussion / Rochester newspaper obituary
« on: November 24, 2019, 01:53:53 PM »
The passing of an 86 year old Webster resident, by the name of William Schutt, was published in the D&C today. Would that possibly be the former driver of the #05, "candy striped" Chevy late model, that ran at Spencer's, back in the 70s? If so, may he RIP....
