idea for shang 2 to make some cash
« on: November 28, 2012, 08:08:27 PM »
Here is an article on an asphalt track putting down some dirt for the world of outlaws.  George has lots of trucks to haul the clay.  This could be away for George to pay the bills so the asphalt cars can continue to run there.  Wow would he ever pack the place!  just saying!

Pavement Track Welcomes World of Outlaws STP Sprint
Cars

Elko Speedway to cover pavement for unique dirt event on Friday,
May 10

ELKO, Minn. - Nov. 27, 2012 - For the first time since a successful
two-year stint at Bristol Motor Speedway in 2000-01, the World of Outlaws STP
Sprint Cars will compete on a pavement track temporarily covered in dirt in
2013.

Elko Speedway, a 3/8-mile pavement track located approximately a half hour
south of Minneapolis, will host its first-ever World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car
Series event on Friday, May 10.
Sammy Swindell, who won twice on the dirt-caked Bristol Motor Speedway,
touted the job of covering Bristol Motor Speedway as a success. He also added
that it levels the playing field for all competitors.
"You don't know what you're going to be up against until you get there,"
Swindell said.
While it will be the first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event at
Elko Speedway, it's far from the first race on dirt at the semi-banked oval.
Track owner Tom Ryan said Elko Speedway is covered in dirt each fall to end the
season and begin the ensuing season. A variety of events are held on the dirt
before it is pealed for the pavement season.
"We do it all the time," Ryan said. "It's not so much a new thing for us to
have dirt on our track, but to have the World of Outlaws is certainly huge.
"We've had nothing but success on dirt. It really, truly is a progressive
banking. For sprint cars, there are three full grooves all around the track.
They can run low. They can run high. They can run a diamond pattern. We see it
all."
Stay tuned to WoOsprint.com
and SLSpromotions.com
for more information throughout the off-season.

Berlin Raceway in Michigan did the same thing this past fall…put clay over their pavement.  Only they did it for a World of Outlaws Late Model show. Apparently it went over well enough to try it again.  I just saw the new schedule.  The WoO Late Models plan to make a return visit to Berlin in 2013.

What would be cool is having woo sprint or late models or Lucas oil late models one week and then maybe the following week run something like a regular weekly dirt show with modifieds, sportsman, imca type mods, street stocks and maybe a 4 cylinder class.  Give the highest finishing shangri la street stock and 4 cylinder a big bonus, as long as they use their regular car.

I know this is all just a pipe dream, but something to think about that’s kind of cool…

2014 will the 35th anniversary of the World of Outlaws’ first appearance in New York State.  That first race happened in the Southern Tier too, in 1979, at little ‘ole 5 Mile Point.  I was there that night.  Not a very good crowd.  I read where the promoters, Roy Sova and Jack Crawford, barely broke even.  It’s amazing how far the World of Outlaws have come since then in terms of name recognition and selling tickets.

Lots of drivers who competed that night are still around.  Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell are still racing and winning on the World of Outlaws tour.  They were at 5 Mile Point back in '79.  Other drivers like Lynn Paxton, Bobby Allen, Jimmy Horton, Jack Hewitt and Lee Osborne are still around.  All were there that night too.  Invite those guys back for an autograph session beforehand.  Hold a special Outlaws Old Timer's race with them guys in Tobias SpeedSTRs or something. It could be played up big.

George raced Dirt many many years before going to asphalt..... Never know ;D

I would bet he would build a dirt track up above the drag strip before he covered a half million bucks worth of concrete tho...

The clay would clean off easier and a whole lot cheaper then building another track, then you just put in a pile, cover it and reuse it again. Clay doesn't wear out, it just gets scraped off in the pits.

I'll make a call. Maybe we can at least get the clay on the corners. Don't need any on the straights.
