Ford14, Not to get confused here. Tony Vecchio was a Street Stock driver and later a car owner for a number of Modified and Busch North drivers including Randy Hedger and Tony Hirschman. The Vecchio family owned cars for a number of years and were based out of Syracuse. The driver you are refering to is Tony Vickio out of Watkins Glen who was a Late Model racer and Graphics designer and lettered a number of racecars that raced at Dundee and Woodhull. Two entirely different people who happen to have names that are similar.

Does anyone have a picture of Speedy Greco, "New Car" driver or Pete Tingue and his 1966 Olds Tornado? If so, could post them on here. Thanks.

I have been trying to buy the Dick Wittie collection. My multiple phone calls to his son have yeilded no results. Dick was the track
photographer at Perry and Holland in the sixties. I'm sure there are some gems that could create a lot of conversation. Well, at least among us older kids.

Mark;
What relation if any is the #70 H. Southcott?

This column appeared in the Sept. 11, 1964 International Motorsports News. The publication was out of Hamburg New York. Larry Dye was an announcer at Holland and Perry. He also put on the very last stock car race at Angelica Raceway in 1965. The race was a 100 Lap "New Car" Invitional. This was a race I personally got to see and had a huge field of competitors. The race came down to the last lap with Irv Hall edging out Eddie Anchor for the win(that is my recollection. Larry thought Eddie Anchor won.)

George Kent in the Smales #41 Pinto beat out Doug Hewitt #52 in the Shangri-La 50 event.
Maynard competed at Lancaster instead (going for his 4th title) and won there.

This was a great idea by Dale. Unfortunately he forgot the first basic rule of promotions - check in with and get the approval of the affected parties *first* before proceeding. He didn't. (sort of like what Humpy did a few weeks ago by offering "protection" to Vickers)

The way the story was relayed to me back then - and it could be wrong - was that Maynard didn't have any advance notice about the promotion. He found out about it on Thursday when he went to a diner for a quiet lunch and opened up his freshly delivered issue of Gater to read it with his meal. Upon seeing the ad, he heaved the paper across the room and stormed out of the diner.

I didn't blame him.

Hey Dan, didn't you post this Shangri-La article before. I seem to recall a conversation about the mysterious driver, Bill White, who finished fifth. I asked John Hill about this back at the Victoria 200 this past year and he seemed to think it might have been Ron Lux, but for the life of me I couldn't remember him ever racing there until 1964 in the Glen Reece car. I guess nobody knows for sure. I do know one thing however, that for the short time the Supers were there at Shangri-La, it was a great show.
