It was George Bouley, but it was a #26 according to my records and a family member of his who contacted me a few years ago.

Wild guess: Was it during qualifying for the American Indy Car Series event held at Shangri-La in 1989?

Bill Tempero?

Actually anything wasn't time trialed isn't an offical track record. So that leaves only the Busch North Cars, NASCAR Tour Modifieds and the above mentioned INDY Car series. You can take it from there.

My guess is either Bentley Warren or Chris Perley - both could crank a super around the track like they were shot out of a cannon.

A couple of interesting notes on the above posts. I'm not sure Chris Perley ever ran at Tioga and I remember Bentley Warren in Ed Bowley's car right after they put the new pavement in the turns back in Dale Campfield's regime cranking off some laps in the mid 15 second range from a strictly unnoffical stop watch and everybody in the tower did a collective WOW! when he did it.

Chris Perley not only ran Tioga, but won a mid-nineties ISMA event. That may very well have been the last time winged Supers were there. I know they had a some non wing shows after that.
I was there that Sunday afternoon, that's why I remember it. Don't know if he set an unofficial quick time, but he was really hooked up in that shiny No. 11 that day.

Wayne Edwards drove the Smales #41 Modified. Anyone ever hear of Brad Smales driving it in '88??

Here's a Shangri-La car owner/driver trivia question that only the hardcore sitting in the stands in the 1970's might be able to answer:

Name the drivers of the Jiri Nechleba/Auto Sport by Jiri Modified #78? I know of at least three...maybe there were more?

Also, is there a final answer yet on the Shangri-La track record?

Brad Smales had his own maroon and gold #41 in 1988, an Evans chassis car that he drove for about half a season.

I'm assuming the question means the classic white with gold/silver numbers and maroon stipe Cal Smales mods. I think that all of the main drivers have been named; certainly all of those that I remember have been!! :-)

On the #78 question, I'm thinkin' Dave Machuga was one...
