Geoff tried an independent rear suspension for a while in'71. It was said to be similar to that of a Corvette of that era. I believe he went back to a conventional set-up before the season ended.
I don't remember who the sponsor was.

As I recall,T.K. McLean owned the car, and was the only lettering on the Valiant. The later Vega bodied car had "Mint Chevrolet" in Sayre,Pa. on it.

You are correct Paperboy. Independant rear was what I was thinking of. I believe he did have independent under it at Langhorne for the open in '71 and was dominating the race when it broke putting him into the front stretch wall. Rocket88, I was going for the Mint Chevrolet sponsorship as the answer but I believe you may be right it could have came later. Although I recall something about a deal where Mint provided the engine parts in 1971 and in a press release from Langhorne it listed Bodine's engine as a "71 Chevrolet".

Who was the Shangri-La Modified champion who owned Alan Johnson's car at Super DIRT Week in 1985?

I'll guess Geoff Bodine, and it is a guess. Alan may have jumped in Billy Taylor's car one year, and Geoff may have had a piece of it.

I might be wrong about this, but I seem to recall Tim Mangus telling me that his father also tried a Corvette IRS back in the late 60s, on a Mangus owned modified. They also had breakage problems...

I attended my first race at Shangri-La Speedway in 1964 with my father. I remember that the modifieds made so much noise and vibration that I could feel the grandstands shake. (Maybe it was me shaking?) I took this picture of the speedway in September of 2005 after the last race. I think the picture tells the story.

(My first time uploading a picture - hope it shows up okay.)

1973 Modified champion Ed Pieniazek was indeed the car owner for Alan Johnson at the October, 1985 Syracuse event.
